MG Motor India, which entered the retail market in June 2019, with the introduction of the Hector SUV, has now registered retail sales of 4,329 units in February, its best-ever retail sales since India market entry. Even on a month-on-month basis, sales are up 20 percent compared to 3602 units sold in January, 2021.
On a year-on-year basis, the February sales are up a whopping 215 percent compared to 1,376 units in last February. The company attributed this achievement to encouraging response to the refreshed Hector SUV family, updated MG ZS EV and the Gloster flagship SUV.
According to Rakesh Sidana director – Sales, MG Motor India, “The higher sales of 2021 product lines are very encouraging. We also expect the EV trend to accelerate with our charging infrastructure now available across more cities. The growth momentum is expected to continue in March, and we are working at the back-end to try and reduce the waiting period for our customers.”
MG Motor India says that with introduction of the updated ZS EV, and making it available in all of 31 cities across India, it has received more than 350 bookings for the all-electric crossover last month and registered a 100 percent month-on-month growth compared to January 2021.
According to the company, the Hector with the latest addition of the CVT option in its petrol variants, as well as offering other changes like the revised champagne-black interior colour scheme and dual-tone exterior paint shades, is getting positive feedback. The company claims that despite the ongoing challenges due to raw material shortage, especially in terms of automotive semiconductors, it has been able to gradually increase production of the tech-laden Gloster.
In an attempt to further its localisation effort, the company has also revealed that it is investing close to Rs 200 crore this year, in order to increase the localisation of electronics in the Hector SUV by an additional 10 percent by end-2021.
