The corporate average fuel efficiency norms, the rules in question, set the standard fuel economy target by vehicle weight or size.
“SIAM is meeting with minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday, regarding deferment of CAFE norms,” a source told ET. “But the government is not very keen, given its CoP21 commitments,” the person added.
The 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held in Paris from November 30 to December 12 2015 that saw the participation of 195 nations.
Among India’s commitments at the meet, is reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity of its GDP by 33-35 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030.
In India, the average corporate CO2 emissions must be 130 gm/ km travelled for 2022, and 113 gm/km travelled thereafter.
Making CAFE norms in India stricter will ensure that automakers are producing vehicles which are fuel-efficient, and reduce their CO2 emissions at the same time.
ET reached out to a SIAM spokesperson who refused comment on the matter.
