New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has recently issued Aadhaar-based authentication for 18 services offered by Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) which include learner’s licence, licence renewal, and duplicate licence. This will eliminate the applicants’ need to visit a local RTO.
As per the notification by the MoRTH, the public need not visit RTO office for several services as they can do it online using Aadhaar authentication.
According to the transport ministry notification, in order to provide convenient and hassle-free services, the Ministry shall make all the required arrangements for wide publicity through media and individual notices to make citizens aware of the requirements of Aadhaar for availing contactless services through the implementing agencies.
“Certain services regarding driving license and Certificate of Registration (RC) have been made completely online. Now these services can be availed without going to RTO. With Aadhaar authentication, on a voluntary basis, anyone can get the benefit of these contactless services,” the ministry said on Twitter.
“This will reduce the compliance burden on citizens, helping them to avail these services in a hassle free, contactless manner. This will also reduce the foot fall in the RTO office, which will further increase efficiency of the RTO offices as well,” the ministry added.
This move comes after the Union government issued a draft notification for linking driving licence and RC with the 12-digit unique identity number assigned to every Indian citizen.
“Any individual desirous of availing himself of the various contactless services, through the portal, is required to undergo Aadhaar authentication,” the ministry highlighted in the notification adding “Provided that till the time Aadhaar is assigned to the individual, benefits of contactless services shall be given to such individual subject to the production of Aadhaar Enrolment ID slip.”
At a time when social-distancing is a must this development will help in minimising crowds at RTOs for such services.
