The contact between Ferrari and electrification is getting closer and closer. In fact, among the innovations that will arrive this year from Maranello there will also be a plug-in hybrid hypercar. For now known as the internal name F171, it will be the second Ferrari in history infected by this technology, after the Sf 90 Stradale from which the Spider variant was also extrapolated at the end of 2020. This discovery will be marketed in a few weeks, just like the Portofino. M, also unveiled last but slowed down by the pandemic that stopped the assembly lines for seven weeks.

The aforementioned models are all part of the Ferrari 2018-2022 business plan, based on an expansion of the offer that has already upset the Maranello range, which today has reached an articulation never seen in the past since it is made up of 00 models. Now the gaze is directed towards the near future, given that in 2022 the advent of the most innovative model and the furthest from the tradition of the brand is expected: the Purosangue SUV. This too, like most of the more recent relatives, will be the result of the articulated strategy defined to expand the Ferrari range.

The latter is based both on the creation of new engines, such as the V6 that will be integrated into the electrified powertrain of the plug-in hybrid berlinetta, to be combined with the traditional V8 and V12, and on the creation of new architectures. Some are intended for conventional propulsion models, others taking electrification into account. Consequently, thermal and electric Ferraris will have personalities that will position them in different ways, although in no case abdicating the brand’s DNA. An indispensable prerequisite for the men of Maranello and which conditions the development of the first full-electric from Maranello, which could be part of the next industrial plan that will be unveiled next year.

President John Elkann was recently expected to confirm that a Ferrari powered only by electrons, although hypothesizing it by the end of the decade. The explanation is simple: Ferrari will not embrace this technology until battery technology is able to meet all the requirements that a true Ferrari must have.
