Registrations of passenger cars with alternative propulsion to gasoline and diesel grew in April with a market share of more than 30%

Alternative powertrains have accounted for 23,907 units sold in April 2021 compared to 474 in 2020 and 11,515 in 2019.

The path to the decarbonisation of mobility continues. With the beginning of Moves III, a significant boost to electric mobility was expected. It seems that this has been the case. Sales of electrified vehicles have accounted for 23,907 units sold last month compared to 474 in 2020, with dealerships closed; and 11,515 in 2019. It represents a growth of 107% compared to the last normal year before COVID-19.

This has caused the market share of alternative drives to grow and rank second behind gasoline. So that the cake is distributed as follows in April: 49.1% gasoline vehicles; 30.4% of the rest of technologies that include sales of pure electricity (BEV), extended autonomy electric (EREV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and non-plug-in (HEV), hydrogen (FCEV), CNG, LNG and LPG ; and 20.5% diesel vehicles.

Regardless of the month of April, in the accumulated of the year electric vehicles, hybrids, gas … grew almost 97%. During the first four months of the year, there were 78,090 (+ 97.69%). In 2020, only 39,501 vehicles of this type were registered in the same period; and in 2019, 44,069 units.

In the annual market share, electrified vehicles continue to gain weight. They take 29.5% of the total sales made in 2021.

Data by segment and autonomous communities

In April 2021, all the autonomous communities have seen how the registrations of this type of passenger car grew with the exception of some regions. Electric, hybrid, hydrogen vehicles… continue to have a higher market share in Madrid (47.67%) and Catalonia (12.18%).

But what alternative energy vehicles are being purchased? As data of interest for dealers, in April 2021 the ECO and Zero vehicles stood out in the segment of medium SUV with 8,613 units sold. They are followed by others such as compact (3,671 units) or small SUV (3,282 units). Large and compact SUVs are the fastest growing compared to April 2020.
