Chic design with lots of glass and butterfly doors that open via biometrics, and an electric drive: Hyundai shows at the New York Auto Show a noble sports car. If this electric car a concept remains unknown.

Hyundai has been noticed less by unconventional cars. That the South Koreans can do something different, they show at the New York Auto Show: There they present an extravagant electric-powered car, the Essentia, which operates under its own luxury brand Genesis.

Of the Genesis Essentia is a fancier GT sports carwhose shapes are reminiscent of futuristic concept cars from the 1960s – including curves and a glass roof. Generally glass: A large part of the car is glazed – front hood, windshield, roof, rear window and large side windows together form a transparent surface.

The two inmates enter through butterfly doors. There’s no need for a key to open it: the B-pillar has a sensor that recognizes the driver’s fingerprint and face. The vehicle is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic, so it is very light. The car was designed by Luc Donckerwolke, who has also worked for Bentley and Lamborghini.

About the drive Hyundai does not reveal much. It consists of several electric motors and accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.1 seconds. Also on battery and range, there are no details. The manufacturer only indicates that the power storage is housed in the center tunnel.

The Essentia is the first electric car of the Hyundai luxury brand Genesis. But that was not founded until 2015 anyway and has only a small model range. By 2021, six electric cars will be launched under the Genesis brand. Whether the Essentia belongs or whether the vehicle remains a one-off, Hyundai has not announced.
