Mahindra & Mahindra, which already has a strong market position in the below-3.5-tonne light commercial vehicle segment in India, is looking to further up the ante.
The company has outlined an aggressive new product launch programme that will see it introduce all of 14 new LCVs by 2026. These products include 6 electric vehicles (EVs) electric vehicles – 4 for last-mile mobility, an electric Jeeto cargo van and a goods-and-passenger carrying pick-up too.
Four of these EVs will be incubated by the company’s new Born Electric Vehicle (BEV) programme. It may be recollected that M&M recently appointed Dr Uli Stuhec as the vice-president and head of Global Born Electric Platform to lead the BEV vehicle programme – BEV architecture and development of BEV platform strategy – in collaboration with its innovation factory, Mahindra Research Valley, Chennai.
The electric Atom will be the first to roll out in FY2022, followed by the new Treo electric three-wheeler, a new product development on M&M’s Last Mile Mobility (LMM) platform and the UDO, the stylish two-seater electric pod production model, whose concept was showcased at Auto Expo 2020. While these four are BEV products, the electric Jeeto will roll out in FY2024, followed by an electric pick-up and two conventionally powered pickups.
The hardy Bolero pickup, which has been soldiering along all these years and is the bullwark of M&M’s small LCV range, is set to expand with 6 models. These comprise 4 new models between 2021 and 2023 and another two in FY2024.
All these products are meant to be disruptive, innovative products with least cost of ownership as their USP.
