Matriculaciones mayo

The registrations of passenger cars and off-road vehicles moderate their fall with a 24% reduction in sales in the fifth month (vs May 2019), with 95,403 units.

Light commercial vehicle registrations fell 22% in the month compared to May 2019, to 16,205 units.

Industrial vehicles, buses, coaches and minibuses closed the month of May with a drop in deliveries of 25.4%, to 1,963 units.

Vehicle sales data have not yet reached the pre-pandemic figures in any of its segments, nor in the month, in the accumulated of the five months of 2021, maintaining a generalized level of falls above 20%. However, registrations of passenger cars and SUVs partially modulate their fall compared to the same month of 2019, with a decrease in sales of 24%, to 95,403 units. The accumulated for the year registers a fall of 36%, to 360,057 units, compared to the same period two years ago.

The comparison with May 2019 is maintained because doing so with May 2020 means reporting a 177.8% rise in passenger car and SUV registrations, a figure that does not reflect the current reality. This increase is due to the fact that in 2020, commercial activity was only reactivated, and not completely, as of May 11, which, together with the period of confinement, conditioned the sales of the month.

By channels, the company channel and the renter channel are the ones that are recovering some purchase rhythm, reducing the sales drops of the last month. This better performance is not perceived in the individual channel, which, although they are the ones with the highest number of sales, with 33,234 registrations, still fell sharply in the month, 39%. The end of the state of alarm, the progressive increase in the rate of vaccination, the recovery of mobility between regions and tourism and the forecasts for the summer campaign, have allowed the rental channel to moderate its falls, with a decrease of 8.7% with 31,100 units registered.

The average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in May stood at 125.7 grams of CO2 per kilometer (WLTP), 7% lower than that registered last year this month.

LIGHT COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

In May, 16,205 light commercial vehicles were registered, 21.8% less than in the same month of 2019. In the accumulated of the year, sales of light commercial vehicles maintained a 24% drop, to 72,608 units, with respect to from the same period two years ago. By channels, although there are still significant falls in the three channels, the rental company is the one that suffered the least decrease in the month, with a reduction of 9.9%, to 3,163 units. On the other hand, companies and the self-employed obtained higher sales volume but registered a greater decrease in the fifth month, with falls of 17.5% and 35.1%, respectively.

INDUSTRIAL AND BUSES

The registrations of industrial vehicles, buses, coaches and minibuses maintain the rhythm of the other segments and register a 25.4% fall during May, with 1,963 units delivered compared to May 2019. In the accumulated of the year, sales in this segment have fallen 14.8% compared to the same period of 2019, to 9,915 units.

VALUATION FROM FACONAUTO

Juan Luis Fernández, head of public affairs for FACONAUT, indicates that “May has accentuated the trend that has been accompanying us since the dealerships recovered their activity a year ago: the private channel, that is, the purchases made mainly by families, does not stop losing weight. Last month, only one in three registrations was made on this channel, served by dealers. However, the other two marketing channels, that of companies and that of rental companies, are already registering identical figures to those of 2019, which must be our reference, while the private channel is still with sales of almost 40% below, which shows the depth of the crisis for domestic economies. For this reason, it is vital that all those measures are started to revitalize the acquisitions of families and individuals; specifically, the autonomous communities should accelerate the implementation of the Moves III Plan in their territories. In this regard, it would also be desirable for them to accompany the Moves with other parallel and broader stimulus plans, as the Basque Country has already done. We are in critical months for many dealers who have endured for many months with a very low level of registrations “.
