Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Sunday that the company won’t be bringing out a premium version of its new Model S Plaid car, the Plaid Plus.
“Plaid+ is canceled. No need, as Plaid is just so good,” Musk said in a tweet, adding: “0 to 60mph in under 2 secs. Quickest production car ever made of any kind. Has to be felt to be believed.”

The Model S Plaid officially starts shipping this week, having been delayed seven days after Musk said it needed “one more week of tweak.” Per Tesla’s website, it has a top speed of 200 mph and an estimated range of 390 miles.
The vehicle is listed for $113,000 on Tesla’s website — which at time of writing still displays the Model S Plaid Plus for $143,000 with the note “Plaid+ available in mid-2022”, although the option to actually order is not available. According to CNET, customers ceased to be able to pre-order the Plaid Plus in May, when Tesla quietly grayed out the option to order it. The Plus was due to offer customers a range of 520 miles.
Tesla has also been struggling with the global semiconductor chip shortage affecting many automakers. Musk said during the company’s earnings call in April that the shortage was causing “insane difficulties” for the company, and at the end of May he said it was responsible for Tesla raising the price of its vehicles.
