At a meeting to review the progress of various energy efficiency programmes and climate change actions, Singh asked pertinent departments and agencies to focus on sectors with high emissions such as transport, MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) and power plants.
Singh advised ministries to implement demand-side initiatives to minimise wastage of energy across all sector of the economy. Simultaneously, he said low-carbon technologies needed to be deployed on a “massive” scale, especially in MSMEs, where it is highly needed.
The minister also asked all government departments to push electric mobility more aggressively. He said a concerted push for renewables is already underway and a detailed action plan will be developed to identify potential areas.
Separately addressing an industry webinar, Singh said India is going to overachieve its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) targets committed as part of the Paris agreement on climate change.
“The climate change performance index of 2020 rates India as among the 10 highest performers for climate action and rates India very high for well below 2 degrees rise in temperature. We did it in a very, very short timeframe,” he said
