Thane: In a bid to curb noise pollution, the Thane police launched a campaign against illegally modified silencers that are attached to two-wheelers.
Balasaheb Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Thane, said that several citizens have complained against the blaring noise of such modified silencers and of the inconvenience that is caused to senior citizens and children due to it.
Acting on those grievances, the Thane Police decided to conduct a campaign in the city wherein two-wheelers with modified silencers were stopped and the devices were removed.
Through 18 transport sub-divisions of Thane, they launched a campaign from June 14 to June 17 against such vehicles and as many as 190 two-wheelers were penalised under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Also, 121 such silencers were immediately removed from the vehicles and were destroyed on the spot.
Besides, as a symbolic gesture, modified silencers were destroyed using a road roller near Durgadi Chowk in Kalyan, and strict action has been warned against violators.
The authorities also came down heavily on four-wheelers with black film on their windows. “Such vehicles can carry out illegal activities inside their vehicle and get away with it. Thus, those found with such vehicles will be punished. Black films of 404 vehicles have been removed in the last four days,” Patil said.
He further appealed to citizens to adhere to traffic rules for their safety as well as for those around them.
