Synchronising the official launch and pricing of its Tigor EV with the announcement of a strong 4-star Global NCAP crash test rating, Tata Motors today launched the electric sedan at a starting price of Rs 11.99 lakh. With this, the Tigor EV becomes the most affordable electric sedan in India.
Available in three variants – XE (Rs 11.99 lakh), XM (Rs 12.49 lakh) and XZ+ (Rs 12.99 lakh & dual-tone option (Rs 13.14 lakh), the Tigor EV delivers peak power output of 55 kW and a peak torque of 170 Nm. It is powered by a 26-kWh liquid-cooled, high energy density battery pack and an IP 67 rated battery pack and motor. The eco-friendly sedan has an extended ARAI-certified range of 306 kilometres (under standard testing conditions). This would translate into around 180-200km in real-world conditions and ideal for urban duties.
According to Mr. Shailesh Chandra, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors – “EVs are fast gaining popularity on the back of rising comfort of customers, as the barriers to adoption are being overcome and due to growing preference for environmentally friendly solutions. This has been spearheaded by our very own Nexon EV, which today is the most popular EV in the Indian market.”
He added, “The increasing support from the central and the state Government, providing subsidies and a conducive environment for EVs to grow, inspires us to expand our EV offerings to our customers. The Tigor EV is a perfect option for all aspiring sedan buyers who are looking to own a vehicle that is technologically advanced, comfortable and high on safety standards, while also being an environmental-friendly commute.”
The Tigor EV has been launched when petrol and diesel prices are at record highs: petrol is currently retailing at Rs 107.52 a litre in Mumbai, while diesel costs Rs 96.48 a litre. Will the the latest EV from Tata get ICE-powered sedan buyers to make the shift to electric mobility? The next few months should tell the story. It also helps that Tata Motors has little or no competition in the electric passenger vehicle segment in India.
