The electric Mercedes G-Class becomes reality at the Monaco Motor Show. For now it is a concept but it has all the characteristics to become reality. Christened the Mercedes EQG concept, the electric off-road vehicle of the Star brand combines the iconic design with lithium-ion battery-powered propulsion. During the world premiere of the current generation of the G-Class, in January 2018 in Detroit, the Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger, guest of honor and convinced fan of ‘G’, snatched a promise from the then chairman of the board of directors of Daimler Ag, Dieter Zetsche, was unexpected for many at the time: the forthcoming electrification of all model series would of course also include the G-Class. A little less than three and a half years later, Mercedes-Benz keeps this promise and presents the Concept EQG, an almost production study of a fully electric G-Class.

The origins of the G-Class date back to 1979. For over four decades, the ‘G’ has represented the most extreme point of Mercedes-Benz off-road. Over the course of more than forty years, the outward appearance of this off-road icon has changed only marginally. Even in the context of the extensive redesign of 2018, which brought with it the greatest technological leap in the history of the model, Mercedes-Benz managed to intervene on the design without ever losing the identity of the car. There’s a reason: its once purely functional components have long since become iconic style elements. These include, for example, the characteristic door handle and the characteristic closing sound, the sturdy outer protection strip, the spare wheel exposed on the rear door and the eye-catching front turn signals.

Mercedes EQG 2022
The Concept EQG also remains in the stylistic tradition of this model and is immediately recognizable as a G-Class. Next to production, it adopts the angular style of the G-Class, including its characteristic elements. Illuminated stripes visually bring out the sturdy outer protective bands. The separating edge of the attractive two-tone paintwork – glossy black at the top, glossy aluminum at the bottom – slides into the front area directly under the engine hood above, underlining this design feature even more clearly. The front view remains familiar, also thanks to the typical round headlights. The all-electric variant features a continuous deep black radiator grille. A Black Panel front with 3D effect illuminated star. All around, the animated ’round squares’ motif in the typical blue of the Mercedes-EQ models creates an ideal visual connection. An all-round illuminated band wraps around the Black Panel, which, together with the white illuminated circles in the exterior mirror housings, complements the headlight daytime running lights graphics.

Wallbox at the rear
The EQG is fitted with 22-inch polished aluminum alloy wheels with an exclusive design. Instead of the usual spare wheel cover there is a lockable box with white illuminated accents on the back reminiscent of the design of a wallbox. A compartment that could be used, for example, to store the charging cable within easy reach. “We are traveling into the future with the new EQG. Mercedes EQG 4×4
The technical characteristics of the EQG make it an off-road vehicle without compromise. Its body is also based on the sturdy frame with side members and cross members. The chassis design remains devoted to off-road vehicles, as is typical of the G-Class: with independent suspension on the front axle and a newly developed rigid axle on the rear for the integration of electric drive. With four electric motors close to the wheels and individually controllable, the vehicle will offer unique driving characteristics, on and off-road. As with any 4×4, the Concept EQG downshifts can be activated via a 2-speed selector to confidently meet the highest off-road requirements.
