In September, the European car market loses a quarter of its volumes compared to 2019. This is certified by Acea data on registrations in the Old Continent. In the month, the decline in sales in the EU, EFTA and UK areas was 24.3%, confirming the trend recorded in the January-September period, – 24.4%. These are the worst performances for the month of September since 1995 with all major markets in negative territory: from -34.4% in Great Britain to -32.7% in Italy and -25.7% in Germany until the contraction of the 20.5 in France and 15.7 in Spain.

The “recovery” on 2020
In 2020, the recovery of volumes in the European area over 2020 was in any case 6.9%, while comparing the month of September with last year, the fewest registrations reached 25.2%. Who loses the most
Among the manufacturers, the 2 largest European manufacturers, Volkswagen and Stellantis, respectively lost 29.7 and 30.4% in September, Renault lost 24% in September and is in negative territory compared to 2020 if we take into account consider sales from January to September. Hyundai’s result goes against the trend, growing by 26.9% in the month. It should be noted that Daimler Group and Ford in the month lost about half of their volumes over 2020, while from the beginning of the year the decline was 5 and 11%.
The performance of electric cars
In the United Kingdom in September, the Centro Studi Promotor points out, the market share of electric cars stood at 15.2% while the plug-in hybrid reached 6.4%. In Germany, full electric cars represented a third of volumes, in Italy the market share of electric cars jumped to 8% compared to 0.9% in September 2019.
