Start-ups plugging into electric mobility is now mega trend. The latest in India is the Coimbatore-based Boom Motors, which has launched its Corbett 14 (single battery and 100km range) and Corbett 14-EX (dual battery and 200km range) moto-scooters. They are priced at Rs 89,999 and Rs 124,999 respectively.
In terms of tech specs, the Corbett 14 produces 3kW of peak performance while the Corbett 14-EX develops 4kW at peak; maximum speed is 65kph and 75kph respectively. The e-scooters come with swappable battery of 2.3kWh and 4.6kWh respectively.
Charging the Corbett takes 4 hours using normal charger and 2.5 hours using fast charge. The e-scooter features a 30-litres boot space and accessories can be added to increase storage space.
The start-up has been founded by Anirudh Ravi Narayanan (CEO) and Vinoth Thiruvenkatasamy (CTO), with an aim to create EVs for the domestic market. Boom Motors says it has developed the Corbett e-scooters in-house in a scant 18 months.
The company is offering a 7-year warranty on its two moto-scooters, while the IoT-enabled smart battery comes with a 5-year warranty. At the end of the battery life, Boom Motors will repurchase it from the customer and deploy it for other use.
Boom Motors says it has a manufacturing capacity to produce 100,000 units a year at its Coimbatore plant, and also is scouting for new plant locations. Interestingly, the start-up says 90% of its supply chain is based out of Tamil Nadu.
As part of its strategy to make the e-scooters durable, the company says it has 40% lesser parts compared to other e2Ws, which means less possibility of breakdown. It has also partnered TVS Group-owned KI Mobility for aftersales service, which allows its customers to access 24,000 service touchpoints across the country.
Anirudh Ravi Narayanan, CEO, Boom Motors said, “In order to fuel the transition to EVs, Boom Motors believes that vehicles should offer value, convenience and peace-of-mind to the customer – only then they will swich en masse. To demonstrate our best-in-class value, Boom Motors is the first EV company to offer customers to purchase our vehicles for 5-year EMI. Rates will start at Rs. 1,699 per month – which is less than what many people spend on petrol. For convenience, we are offering swappable battery with a portable charger that will allow the bike to be charged anywhere. Today many people struggle with charging in apartments, offices and malls. For peace-of-mind, we are offering service touchpoints across the country, roadside assistance and of course an unbeatably durable bike that will have minimal downtime to begin with.”
In terms of sales, Boom Motors says customers can book the Corbett online. It also aims to have 60 dealers till January 2022, and expand its network across the country in the next 6 months. The e-scooters will be available on EMI starting Rs 1,699 for the Corbett 14 and Rs 2,499 for the Corbett 14-EX. Customers can also exchange their petrol bike for the same and use their old bike as down payment. The deliveries have already begun for B2B customers, while retail order deliveries will begin in January.
