Wolfsburg IG Metall is a force in Wolfsburg. Around 90 percent of Volkswagen employees are members of the union. The Wolfsburg branch is the largest local administration of IG Metall in Germany. No other German city has so many members, around 90,000.
IG Metall actually always appears as one, especially at Volkswagen in Wolfsburg. But at the moment the exact opposite is happening there, there is a threat of a split. The VW works council chairwoman Daniela Cavallo has to expect an influential opponent from her own ranks in the next works council elections in the spring.
Frank Patta, 57, is the man who wants to challenge Daniela Cavallo, 46, who has been in office since May, in the works council elections with her own list. It is an extraordinary situation for IG Metall that the leadership of the employee representatives is being put under such pressure.
