White smoke has finally erupted from the famous chimneys that dominate the historic Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, in northern Germany. The chairman of the group’s 12-brand management board, Herbert Diess, will retain his post. The 63-year-old leader was in the hot seat for several weeks , especially after having mentioned a surplus of 30,000 people in Germany (out of around 300,000), without having consulted the all-powerful workers’ committee dominated by the IG Metall union.
After numerous conciliation meetings, the supervisory board finally confirmed him in his functions on Thursday, December 9. Herbert Diess will however lose the management of China, which will be entrusted from August 2022 to Ralf Brandstätter, the boss of the Volkswagen brand. The latter is also joining the management committee. He himself will be replaced at Volkswagen by the boss of Škoda, Thomas Schäfer.
