Düsseldorf Golf drivers are used to grief. Sometimes the navigation system fails, the other time the screen remains black. If things go really badly, the car automatically switches to the emergency program and only allows a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour. “A disaster,” says a Volkswagen dealer from the Rhineland.
The current eighth generation Golf model has been sold in Germany for two years. Initially, Volkswagen tried to downplay the software problems outwardly. But internally in the group, the assignment of blame soon went back and forth. A VW board member had to leave because he had spoken out in favor of a later launch – mainly because of the problems with the software.
