Also at home away from the asphalt: At least that’s how the Tiguan appears in the company photo – here as a longer Allspace version.

Düsseldorf What do tigers and iguanas have in common? They are reflected in the name of the VW Tiguan. The successful compact SUV from Wolfsburg owes its model name to a reader survey that “Auto Bild” once conducted, writes the “Auto Bild Tüv-Report 2022”.
The hard facts include: With the exception of two main defects, the Tiguan can hardly be blamed for anything in the main inspection (HU).
Model history: In 2007, the successful model joined the VW model portfolio below the larger Touareg. In 2011 there was a first facelift before the second generation came onto the market in 2016, which underwent its facelift in 2020.
Body variants: As is typical for the SUV category, the Tiguan also arrives as a five-door model with a high body, increased ground clearance and a high seating position. Since 2017 it has also been available in the Allspace variant with an extended wheelbase, a larger interior and up to seven seats.

Dimensions (depending on generation): 4.43m to 4.49m x 1.81m to 1.84m x 1.63m to 1.70m (LxWxH); Trunk volume: 470 l to 1510 l (1st generation); 615 l to 1655 l (2nd generation). Allspace: 4.70m x 1.84m x 1.67m (LxWxH); Trunk volume: 760 l to 1920 l.
What the VW Tiguan uses is good
Strengths: Especially with an adaptive chassis, the Tiguan is a comfortable glider, although the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) does not officially list it as an SUV, but as an off-road vehicle. At the HU, the steering and steering joints as well as the drive shafts shine with almost maximum inconspicuousness, the rust prevention is exemplary according to the “Auto Bild Tüv Report 2022”.
Most of the lighting components are also below average for defects, and the brake lines and hoses stand out particularly positively from the overall durable brake components. Oil loss is quite rare, the exhaust is durable.
Weaknesses: The Tiguan was also affected by the diesel scandal. According to the TÜV report, some diesel models are on the road with increased consumption and less pulling power after a software update. The HU shortcoming, however, are the axle suspensions of the first generation, which are criticized seven times more often than on average.

It is not uncommon for the inspectors to discover broken springs. In models of all years, the brake discs weaken; scores and excessive wear are discovered far too often here. If maintenance is delayed, the DSG gearbox can jerk when starting, even in newer cars.
Breakdown behavior: The ADAC places the Tiguan in good positions in its statistics. Only copies of the first registration years 2008, 2011 and 2012 land in the middle. The club cites jumped or torn timing chains on models from 2008 as the main breakdown point. Defective boost pressure controls also occur.
Engines: petrol (four-cylinder, front and four-wheel drive): 92 kW/125 hp to 235 kW/320 hp; Diesel (four-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 85 kW/115 hp and 176 kW/240 hp. Plug-in hybrid (e-hybrid): 180 kW/245 hp system output. Note: The engine affected by the diesel scandal with the abbreviation EA 189 can also be found in the Tiguan.
