Las furgonetas eléctricas, cada vez más presentes en las flotas empresariales

More than a third (36%) of surveyed business fleets already have at least one electric van.

The electrification of mobility not only affects the individual channel but also other sources such as company or rent a car. Currently, more and more companies are betting on electric mobility. A new study prepared by Transport & Environment (T&E) and Ecodes in Spain reveals that electric vans are increasingly present in business fleets.

Specifically, it is noted that more than a third (36%) of the business fleets surveyed already have at least one electric van. Nearly another third (32%) plan to buy an electric van this year. Another 16% are considering buying an electric van in the next five years. This survey has assessed the opinion of 745 fleets throughout Europe.

The price of owning an electric van

The interest in electric vans is also derived from cost savings. According to the same study, the total cost of ownership of an electric van is 25% cheaper per kilometer than diesel. Therefore, investing in electrification represents savings in the medium/long term.

Something similar to what happens with cars. According to a study carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) in collaboration with the European Climate Foundation, the electric car produces significant long-term savings. According to the study, the total cost of the electric car adds up to 56,000 euros in 11 years of use, compared to 65,000 euros for a compact with a gasoline engine. In other words, it represents a saving of 9,000 euros by recharging the car with the normal electricity rate. Moreover, the savings could reach 13,000 euros if it is recharged with the reduced night rate.

The challenges of this segment

Despite their cost advantages and strong customer interest, according to the study, there is still not enough supply of electric vans to meet growing demand. Electric van sales are rising very slowly: only 3% of new van sales were electric in 2021, up slightly from 2% in 2019.

To accelerate this figure, T&E proposes to adjust the CO2 reduction targets in the coming years. According to his calculations, this measure would bring an additional 1 million electric vans to Europe’s roads within five years.
