After three weeks of standstill due to Corona, car production at the world’s largest BMW location Shenyang in China has now started again. One-shift operation is currently still in progress, said a company spokesman on Thursday. At the same time, the extensively expanded Dadong plant in Shenyang has started production of the X5 SUV with an extended wheelbase. The X5 was previously only manufactured in Spartanburg in the USA.
Production Director Milan Nedeljkovic said: “Last year almost a third of the BMW Group vehicles sold worldwide were manufactured in Shenyang.” The 19-year-old Dadong plant was modernized and expanded. BMW has held 75 percent of the joint venture BMW Brilliance with Chinese partner Brilliance since February.
In addition to the two car factories Dadong and Tiexi, there is an engine and battery factory in the city of Shenyang in northeast China. “The summer will also see the new Lydia plant, which will be home to the new BMW i3, a fully electric 3 Series sedan produced exclusively for the Chinese market.”
So far, BMW has produced the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, X1, X2, X3, the all-electric iX3 and now the X5 in China. In two years, the next generation of the electric mini will roll off the line in Zhangjiazang near Shanghai, with Great Wall as a Chinese partner. Last year, BMW sold 846,000 cars in China and built more than 700,000 BMW cars for the Chinese market and for export in Shenyang with 23,000 employees.
