Samsung SDI is ‘racing alone’ in the power tool battery market. There is a significant gap with second place, almost doubling in market share.
According to the “China Power Tool Industry Development” document published jointly by the China EV Tank and Li Wei Economic Researcher, sales of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for power tools was 2.55 billion units last year. This is a 26.2% increase from the previous year, and the global power tool market grew to $63.69 billion (KRW 78.93 trillion). This phenomenon is due to power tools going from wired to wireless.
Samsung SDI took the No. 1 spot in sales, and sold 1 billion units, 40% of the total market.
China’s Tenpower ranked second; yet, Samsung SDI’s sales doubled that of Tenpower.
China’s EVE Energy, Changhong New Energy, and LG Energy Solution followed behind Tenpower in that order. Previous leaders of cylindrical batteries, Japan’s Panasonic and Murata, did not make to the top list.
Samsung SDI’s dominance is heavily due to its close cooperation with major power tool companies. Samsung SDI has been supplying cylindrical batteries for 10 years to the world’s four largest power tool makers: Bosch, TTi, Stanley Black & Decker, and Makita. Samsung SDI steadily focused on the power tool market while major battery companies focused on EVs.
An official from Samsung SDI said, “We have been supplying cylindrical batteries for many years to the world’s four largest power tool makers, including German Bosch, TTi, Stanley Black & Decker, and Makita. In the entire cylindrical battery market, EVs, power tools, and mobility field such as quick boards account for 50%, 35%, 15-20%, respectively.”
The capacity of the power tool battery market was 16.3GWh last year, which accounts for 3% of global lithium-ion battery shipments.
The world’s largest power tool manufacturer is China, but the world’s largest power tool consumers are Europe and the United States. The Chinese market only accounts for 24% of the global power tool market. Lithium-ion cylindrical small batteries’ standard products are ‘18650’ and ‘21700′ in the power tool market.
