Vehículos híbridos en la Unión Europea

The increase in the market share of electric hybrid vehicles is a reality, but they still do not surpass combustion vehicles.

As reported by ACEA, sales of hybrid electric vehicles increased by 25.1% compared to battery electric vehicles that managed to increase by 12%. Although we must not forget that gasoline vehicles continue to lead the ranking with 30.6% of total registrations obtained in the first quarter of 2022.

In general terms, between the months of January and March, a total of 563,030 hybrid cars were sold in the European Union. With the exception of Italy (-6.3%), all the main markets contributed to the positive performance in the region. For its part, registrations of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) fell by 5.3% throughout the European Union during the first quarter of the year. Despite this, PHEVs expanded their overall market share due to falling sales of gasoline and diesel cars.

How have the sales and registrations of the rest of the technologies evolved?

Regarding the registrations achieved during this first quarter, traditional fossil fuel cars stand out, achieving 52.8% of the market. On the other hand, new electric vehicles managed to increase market share during these months: battery electric vehicles represent 10% of total sales and plug-in hybrids 8.9% of the European Union market.

Taking into account the ACEA data, registrations of diesel cars decreased by 33.2% and a total of 378,009 units were registered. It is important to note that this fall has occurred in all the markets of the European Union. Specifically, in Spain, 30.8% of sales are lost compared to the same period in 2021. However, gasoline vehicles, although they lose market share from 40.8% to 36.0%, continue to lead the market in terms of volume is concerned, reaching a total of 808,039 units.

A growing interest

According to data from a study prepared by Sumauto, hybrid and electric vehicles currently achieve 25% of Internet searches, thirteen percentage points above last year. However, gasoline vehicles have gone into the background with an initial 32% compared to the 21% currently registered.

The growing interest in hybrid and electric vehicles is something that has never happened before. And, it should be noted that, based on the study, searches for new vehicles in this modality increase approximately 20 points. While those of gasoline and diesel decrease.
