Autonomous driving does not necessarily have to solve the traffic problem in cities.
Autonomous driving will always be followed by many advantages laid in the cradle. Some studies say it would be more environmentally friendly and relieve cities. But is that really true? A study from Sweden has reviewed the benefits of autonomous driving. In Gothenburg, people are becoming convinced that the shared car – even if it can drive itself – will not relieve the traffic system.
The study, by simulating the PTV Group was carried out, examined the use of autonomous car and ride sharing concepts in the city Gothenburg in Sweden. The models varied in the percentage of shared autonomous vehicles, switching the use of public transport instead of private cars and automated driving services with different travel times and distances.
The result showed that the integration of autonomous driving does not necessarily lead to less traffic. This also applies to different numbers of vehicles. Although the number of vehicles would decrease as a result of autonomous driving, the volume driven would increase. In this way, autonomous driving leads to more traffic.
A result that has already produced several studies, such as the study by Deloitte. In the current study, it was primarily the car-sharing services that increased the volume of traffic.
