Volkswagen boss Herbert Diess does not see the self-imposed goal of replacing Tesla as the world market leader in electric cars by 2025 as a sure-fire success. “It will be a close race,” Diess said at a Financial Times event on Monday.
The main competitor from the USA is expanding its capacities quickly. Volkswagen does the same and also has more brands and a wider range of vehicles. He therefore still sees the chance of achieving the goal. “We will not give up.”
Even a longer war in Ukraine will not overturn Volkswagen’s plans to increase the share of e-cars in sales worldwide to 50 percent by the end of the decade, Diess said in response to questions from the newspaper. The trend towards more environmentally friendly vehicles remains.
However, he is concerned about high inflation. In view of the Russian attack on Ukraine, Diess again warned against the formation of blocs in the world. This would primarily be at the expense of Europe. Volkswagen is trying to cushion the loads as best as possible.
