Volkswagen and the carmaker Mahindra want to work together on the electrification of the Indian automobile market. To this end, the two groups agreed on a preliminary contract for the delivery of components for the MEB modular system for electric cars developed by the Wolfsburg-based company, as the two partners announced on Thursday.
Mahindra wants to equip its “Born Electric Platform” with MEB components such as electric motors, battery system components and battery cells. A binding supply agreement should be drawn up by the end of the year. Financial details were not given.
With Mahindra, the world’s second-largest car company has gained another major customer for the self-developed electric platform on which vehicles from VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat are already being built with their subsidiary Cupra.
Such an agreement was concluded with Ford a few years ago. By selling licenses, the Wolfsburg-based company wants to recoup the high development costs for the MEB and become more profitable in the e-car business.

At the 2021 World Climate Conference in Glasgow, India committed itself to only permitting zero-emission vehicles from 2035. With around three million new registrations a year, the South Asian country is one of the five largest automobile markets in the world. According to forecasts, the market could grow to up to five million units by 2030.
