There is a report announcing that global battery production will reach 6000 GWh by 2031. This is equivalent to 90 million EVs, which is one year sales.
According to ‘May 2022 Gigafactory Assessment’ released by Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI), the number of batteries gigafactories that are currently in progress worldwide has exceeded 300. The lithium-ion battery production capacity would reach 6387.6GWh once all of these factories are completed.
China is currently leading the construction of gigafactories; joint ventures between auto manufacturers and battery manufacturers in North America and Europe built significant number of new factories over the past two years.
North America accomplished a fastest growth since last year, building 11 gigafactories, and Europe built 8 gigafactories during the same period. Tesla’s Nevada gigafactory was the only factory directly invested in by au auto manufacturers among the 5 gigafactories in North America as of September 2019.
Of the North American gigafactories currently scheduled for 2031, the auto manufacturers have full or joint ownership of 14 out of 23 gigafactories, which account for 81% of North America’s production capacity. One-third of the 30 gigafactories in Europe are related to auto manufacturers, which accounts for 40% of European production capacity.
According to BMI survey, China accounts for more than 75% of the gigafactories, and plans to operate 226 gigafactories by 2030. China is expected to secure a production capacity of 4500 GWh, which accounts for 70% of the global production capacity by 2031.
