Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that Tesla’s AI Day #2 has been pushed back to September 30, 2022. He said on Twitter that Tesla may actually have an Optimus prototype working by the new date. He recently announced a second AI Day that was planned on the same date as last year’s.
AI Day #2: The Tesla Optimus Bot
During the Cyber Rodeo event at Giga Texas, Elon Musk said that Tesla will hopefully have a shot at having version one of the Optimus bot in production next year. There are many varying opinions as to whether or not the bot is a new distraction or something useful. I think it may be a mix of both. Certainly, it will be useful, and if Tesla can develop AI that runs both a robot and a car, imagine the possibilities of that AI saving lives or finding other ways to benefit all of us.
Simultaneously, I’ve heard some critics worry that the robot doesn’t align with Tesla’s mission of accelerating sustainability. I think the critics have a fair point in the sense that they are looking at the short term. Long term, the robots could also help with that, especially if Tesla is able to solve real-world AI and use it for the purposes of making driving safer for everyone.
During Tesla’s Q1 2022 earnings call, Elon Musk passionately spoke about the importance of the Optimus bot.
“I was surprised that people did not realize the magnitude of the Optimus robot program. The importance of Optimus will become apparent in the coming years. Those who are insightful or listen carefully will understand that Optimus ultimately will be worth more than the car business, worth more than FSD. That’s my firm belief.”
Tesla’s AI Day #2 is sure to be filled with exciting updates. Hopefully I will attend for CleanTechnica again this year.
