GM China Reinforces Sustainability Efforts

SHANGHAI – General Motors today published the 2021 GM China Sustainability Report. It highlights the company’s efforts and achievements in leading the future of mobility, facilitating sustainable manufacturing, giving back to society and developing talent.

“China is a cornerstone of GM’s vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion,” said Julian Blissett, GM executive vice president and president of GM China. “Leveraging GM’s global and local solutions, our goal is to become a leader in electrified and autonomous vehicles.”

2021 GM China Sustainability Report Highlights

  • Leading the transformation to electric and autonomous vehicles:
    • GM plans to invest $35 billion in EVs and AVs from 2020 to 2025 globally.
    • GM brought its evolutionary Ultium platform to China.
    • GM plans to have more than 1 million units of EV production capacity in each of China and North America by 2025.
    • Deliveries of the Cadillac LYRIQ, GM’s first Ultium-based product for the Chinese market, will be rolled out in 2022.
    • GM is converting more than 50% of its manufacturing footprint in China to be capable of EV production by 2030. The first Ultium Center that is assembling battery packs for locally produced EVs opened in Shanghai in October 2021.
    • GM announced the investment of $300 million in Momenta, a self-driving startup in China. It will help accelerate the development and deployment of next-generation self-driving technologies for future GM vehicles in China.
  • Facilitating sustainable manufacturing:
    • Three GM China plants have received ENERGY STAR recognition.
    • All GM manufacturing bases across China are actively carrying out energy conservation, with 225 projects launched. This has led to standard coal savings of 18,126 tons and cost savings of more than RMB 53 million.
    • SAIC-GM’s Jinqiao plant in Shanghai and SAIC-GM Dong Yue Motors were recognized as Green Facilities by the Chinese government. In addition, SAIC-GM Dong Yue Motors and SAIC-GM Dong Yue Powertrain were recognized as Green Facilities by the Shandong provincial government.
    • GM has been conducting energy treasure hunts in China for four years. Eighteen potential opportunities were identified last year, with expected cost savings of about RMB 2.65 million in 2021.
  • Giving back to society:
    • GM and Safe Kids Worldwide (China) jointly published the latest Research Report on the Understanding About and Use of Child Safety Seats. 2021 marked the eighth year of the Safe Kids Safe Ride program, which is promoting the safety of children in and around vehicles.
    • GM China hosted the 2021 Zero Emissions Camp with Junior Achievement. The activity provided a practical learning experience for local high school students.
    • The Chevrolet Red Chalk Program celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2021. More than 1,200 volunteers have visited 134 schools in 29 Chinese provinces and municipalities, providing more than 39,000 rural students with courses to improve their outlook.
    • SAIC-GM-Wuling has run the Love Charity Campaign for 15 years to support rural medical care and to improve medical services in low-income regions.
