Hyundai: Robot taxis for South Korea

The South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai wants to introduce a robotic taxi service in its homeland.

The enterprise Hyundai is one of the big players in the field of autonomous driving and already has a number of services on the market. These are provided together with the supplier Aptiv in the joint venture “Motional”. In Las Vegas in particular, a robot taxi service is active.

Hyundai has now announced without Aptiv that it will introduce a ride-hailing robotic taxi service in South Korea next year. IONIQ 5 e-cars from Hyundai are used. The vehicles will operate at Gangnam in Seoul. Appropriate approval for the test run has been granted by the Ministry of Transport. Safety is guaranteed by safety drivers and a remote control.

The vehicles are in use on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The time span is less critical, Hyundai said. Up to three people can be transported per trip. In South Korea, specifically in Seoul, they prepare it infrastructure have been planning to use such vehicles for some time.

The company also plans to launch robotic taxis in the US with Motional starting next year.
