Volkswagen is bundling its weakening China business under new management and poaching a strategy expert from the technology group Huawei. Marcus Hafkemeyer, who has held a leading position as a strategy consultant at Huawei Automotive, will become head of technology at Volkswagen Group China on August 1, the carmaker announced on Friday.
On the same day, the previous VW brand boss Ralf Brandstätter took over responsibility for the China business on the group board. A new management model will be introduced under his leadership, which will make decisions across brands and in consultation with the Chinese joint ventures.
With the central organization, Volkswagen wants to ensure that products and technologies reach customers more quickly. In their most important market, the Wolfsburg-based company is under increasing pressure from Chinese manufacturers, who are ahead in important technologies.
For this reason, technical development is also being combined organizationally in order to better coordinate the brands. The regional heads of Audi, the main brand VW passenger cars and the software subsidiary Cariad as well as representatives of important departments will be represented on the new China Board, with Brandstätter at the helm.
