Japan’s ex-PM Shinzo Abe reportedly in cardiac arrest after being shot on campaign trail

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was attacked with what appeared to be a gun on Friday while making a street speech in the western city of Nara. He is believed to have been gravely injured.

According to the Nara City Fire Department, Abe was unconscious and was thought to be in cardiac arrest. Officials from his Liberal Democratic Party said the former prime minister was attacked from behind, and initially that the weapon seemed to be a shotgun. Police sources later said that it appeared to be a homemade gun, according to public broadcaster NHK.
