The car manufacturer Opel will stop producing its top model Insignia at its main plant in Rüsselsheim this year. Corresponding information was confirmed on Friday by a spokesman for the Opel parent company Stellantis. The mid-range car, which was developed under the former parent company General Motors, has been delivered exclusively with combustion engines since 2017 and is now coming to an early end. The portal “Business Insider” reported about it first.
The Rüsselsheim plant is now to be fully utilized with the production of the Opel Astra and its sister model, the DS4. The spokesman explained: “The discontinuation of the Insignia with its non-electrifiable platform favors the faster ramp-up of Astra production.” The Stellantis subsidiary has not yet presented a successor model for the Insignia. However, the company had announced that electric variants would be offered in all series from 2024. This had previously been interpreted as the end date for the Insignia.
