GURUGRAM: Commuters whose vehicles are towed away due to wrong parking will now be able to pay the penalties to the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) through UPI (Unified Payments Interface). Until now, they could only use debit or credit cards for payments.
According to a GMDA officials, the authority currently levies towing charges of Rs 2,000 on heavy vehicles with over ten tyres, Rs 1,000 for heavy medium-sized and other commercial vehicles, and Rs 500 for four-wheelers and Rs 200 for two-wheelers violating parking norms.
The traffic police also levy an additional Rs 500 penalty for wrong parking.
“The authority officials were informed that the contractual agencies towing cars for the GMDA only accept card payments, which sometimes becomes a challenge for commuters seeking to carry out payments via UPI,” said Colonel RD Singhal, the general manager of the GMDA mobility division.
“We have made progress since. Now, payment through UPI has been enabled in the POS (point of sale) machines with the contractors for the ease of payment. However, we would request commuters to refrain from parking in illegal spots and to park in the designated areas for better traffic management and road safety,” he said.
The traffic police, officials said, are also working towards enabling digital payments for commuters.
