Barra blogs again: GM plans to double EV, self-driving investments

Following a round of layoffs late last year, GM is planning to renew its focus on creating electric cars and autonomous vehicles.
For the second time in four months, CEO Mary Barra took to LinkedIn to reiterate that the company is shifting its focus to electric cars. The first time preceded November's announcement that General Motors would lay off 15 percent of its workforce and shut down five factories that build sedans and small cars, including the Chevrolet Volt.

Barra has said several times that the company plans to transform its lineup to one that results in “zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion,” which would imply a 100-percent electric lineup, eventually. “We know it won’t happen overnight, but we also know that today we have the technology, the team, the resources and the scale to make it a possibility,” she wrote.
The latest missive specifies that the company plans to double its investment in electric and self-driving cars with that goal in mind.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra answers questions from media
Barra also referenced GM's 2009 bankruptcy, saying, “The long-term success of this company cannot be taken for granted. I am forever grateful for the second chance we received, and it is one of my primary responsibilities to ensure that it never happens again.”
As a result, she said, “We have been working hard to make General Motors a strong, agile enterprise always looking over the horizon and around corners. Every action we’ve taken is designed to better align us with the opportunity ahead.”

Those corners and horizons apparently refer to electric and self-driving cars.
On the electric-car front, GM has announced that it will introduce a new third-generation architecture for electric cars in a new luxury-priced Cadillac electric SUV expected to arrive in 2022.
The company's GMC pickup brand also announced that it is considering building an all-electric pickup—which should perhaps be a fait accompli if General Motors plans to go all-electric—but the upscale-truck sales division did not announce a date or even confirm that it plans to build such a pickup.

Koenigsegg to accelerate growth in the hyper car market with EUR 150 million funding from NEVS
TROLLHÄTTAN, Sweden, 30-Jan-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden) has just announced it purchased 20 percent minority stake in Koenigsegg’s parent company for EUR 150 million.
The high-performance sports cars maker Koenigsegg will use the new capital to accelerate growth in the hyper car market, as well as to break ground into an untapped market segment together with NEVS. The two companies are planning to develop parallel vehicle models in slightly higher volumes with emphasis on electrification.
In addition to this partnership, the companies are establishing a joint venture to expand into new market segments where NEVS AB is contributing USD 150 million in the form of starting capital for a 65 percent stake while Koenigsegg will control 35 percent by contributing primarily with intellectual property, technology licenses, and product design.
The new partnership steps on already existing collaboration between NEVS and Koenigsegg, creating synergies between their geographical footprints, experiences and competencies.
Koenigsegg will access additional capabilities as well as benefit from the extensive automotive knowledge in Trollhättan, where the production facilities of NEVS are located while maintaining their centre of excellence in Ängelholm. NEVS has also production capacity in China and through its majority owner Evergrande has also access to wide distribution channels through ownership in one of China’s largest car retailers.
Additional synergies may be created in the automobile battery segment due to the deal NEVS’ majority owner Evergrande announced last week where it acquired 58.07 percent in automobile battery maker Shanghai CENAT New Energy Co Ltd. The deal is valued at $156 million.
At the moment the deal was announced NEVS has about 650 employees while Koenigsegg Automotive AB relies on 115 people.
Kai Johan Jiang, Chairman of the Board of Directors at NEVS AB:
“Koenigsegg is an enticing company developing advanced cars with unique technology and with a customer base that is one of a kind. To be able to expand our investment in the Swedish automotive industry through a company that we know and have an established relationship with, is an important step for us. We have both competencies and facilities to support Koenigsegg on their journey forward, something we look very much forward to”.
Christian von Koenigsegg, Founder and CEO of Koenigsegg:
“Koenigsegg is breaking new ground, capitalising on our unique technology, performance track record and market position to explore and develop new products. This partnership will create the best conditions for Koenigsegg to accelerate growth in the hyper car market, as well as enabling us to break ground into an untapped market segment together with NEVS. We very much look forward to working together with NEVS to develop products that ensure a sustainable future”.
Koenigsegg Automotive AB is based in Ängelholm, southern Sweden since 2003. The building had previously been home to the Swedish Air Force and once housed JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets.
NEVS has growing operations in China where the company’s first plant in Tianjin was finalized in 2018 and during 2019 serial production of NEVS 9-3 EV is planned to begin. In the meantime, new plant in Shanghai is under construction, scheduled for production of EV cars during 2020.

Amazon is hauling cargo in self-driving trucks developed by Embark
Amazon is using self-driving trucks developed by Embark to haul some cargo on the I-10 interstate highway, CNBC has learned.
The trucks were previously noticed by a Reddit user, who photographed and shared images this week showing tractors emblazoned with the Embark logo and trailers painted with the Amazon Prime logo.
Saw this on the I-10 today. Is amazon making driverless trucks? from r/SelfDrivingCars
Embark integrates its self-driving systems into Peterbilt semis, rather than building its own vehicles completely from scratch. Generally, Embark trucks operate on roads with test drivers on board.
Embark and other firms working on autonomous systems – including fellow start-ups like Ike, Thor Trucks and Pronto.ai, and major players like Alphabet's Waymo and Tesla – aim to alleviate industry pains by making existing truck drivers safer and more efficient.
A driver shortage currently plagues the trucking industry, owing in part to the low pay and difficult schedules and conditions of the job. A lack of available drivers and trucks poses a challenge to e-commerce companies, obviously including Amazon, whose customers expect deliveries in a relatively short time.
CNBC asked both companies for further details about how they work together, but both declined to comment specifically on the deal.
Embark CEO Alex Rodrigues said, “Embark moves freight for a number of major companies on the I-10, however we cannot discuss any company specifically as our relationships are confidential.”
An Amazon spokesperson said, “We are always innovating and working with innovative companies to improve the customer experience and safety of our team. We think successful over-the-road autonomy will create safer roadways and a better work environment for drivers on long-haul runs. ”
Expect to see more autonomous trucks in circulation in the U.S. soon.
In October 2018, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration issued its updated AV3.0 policy, which has helped autonomous vehicle firms like Embark figure out how to test their technology before driving on public roads, and which rules they need to comply with to stay there.
Founded in 2016, Embark has raised at least $47 million in venture funding from firms including Sequoia Capital, Data Collective, Y Combinator and AME Cloud Ventures.
