Moon Walks, Woodstock and the Ford Capri; Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of an Iconic Sports Car

It was the year man walked on the moon for the first time, the legendary Woodstock festival took place and the very first Boeing 747s reached for the skies. In that same year, half a century ago, Ford’s Capri hit Europe’s roads for the first time.

When it launched in 1969, it was billed as “the car you always promised yourself” and more than 1.8 million people would make good on that promise. The demand saw Ford’s Cologne plant in Germany produce Capris for the next 17 years, through three generations, until 1986. Since then countless drivers have continued to own, drive and enjoy one of Europe’s most recognisable sports cars.

A new video to mark the model’s 50th birthday takes a rare RS2600 Capri on a nostalgic trip; from its birthplace to the forests of the nearby Eifel mountains – where extensive testing occurred before launch – and then on..

Adam Vanek, JT Griffin & LaRonda Scott of MADD and Marta Hall & Sally Frykman of Velodyne LidarAdam Vanek hops in the car for a lidar ride along!

For almost 40 years, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has
worked to change behaviors and attitudes toward drunk driving. Through their
work, the organization has learned technology is essential to achieving the
goal of zero deaths caused by drunk driving.

Piyush Rajan wrote
in Telematics Wire about how MADD has partnered for a second year with Velodyne
Lidar.

The article noted:

“MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving is working toward
eradicating this crime through four key elements that include supporting high
visibility law enforcement, ignition interlocks, support for advanced vehicle
technology, and building public support. Velodyne’s work with autonomous
vehicle technology is a natural complement to MADD’s support for future
technologies.”

In covering the MADD/Velodyne partnership, Lynn Walford
wrote a story
in Auto Connected Car News which stated:

“The partnership continues a public education effort across
the country on the safety benefits of autonomous vehicle technology. On October
2, 2019, MADD will participate in Velodyne Lidar’s second annual World Safety
Summit on Autonomous Technology at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The
summit is designed to advance understanding of the safety benefits that can be
achieved with autonomous vehicle technology.”

Business Insider posted
the news, which quoted MADD National President Helen Witty saying:

“Autonomous vehicle technology holds the incredible promise
of helping us eliminate drunk driving. That’s why we are so excited to partner
with Velodyne.”

The news was also posted in Geospatial
World and Safe
Car News.

Velodyne and MADD will continue to work together in advocating
for the safe advancement of autonomous vehicle technology so it can achieve its
full potential in saving lives.
