Subaru Milestone: 4 Million Vehicles Produced In Indiana

Subaru of Indiana Automotive is celebrating the 4 millionth vehicle produced, a milestone that beggars belief considering the Japanese automaker doesn’t have the sales figures of Toyota and Honda. The milestone comes in the guise of a 2019 Outback with silver paintwork and the 3.6-liter boxer engine.
23 photosSIA is the only manufacturing facility outside of Japan according to Subaru. Production began in 1989, and annual output increased from 67,000 to 370,000 vehicles. The 2020 Outback and Legacy mid-size sedan are scheduled to roll off the assembly line at the end of July 2019.
“This is an incredible milestone for our associates and our company,” commented Scott Brand, senior vice president at Subaru of Indiana Automotive. “We’ve come a long way since building our first Subaru vehicle more than 30 years ago.” If you were wondering, the first generation of the Legacy is the vehicle that kicked off production at SIA.
At the present moment, Subaru of Indiana Automotive has “5,700 associates directly responsible for the quality that customers have come to expect.” SIA currently produces the Ascent mid-size crossover, Outback, Legacy, and Impreza for North America.
For the 2020 model year, the Outback has been redesigned from the ground up. Revealed at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, the station wagon with the attitude of a crossover rides on the Subaru Global Platform of the Legacy. In addition to the underpinnings, the Japanese automaker decided to retire the six-cylinder for four-cylinder engine options.
In addition to the 2.5-liter N/A option (182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque), customers can opt for a turbocharged 2.4 with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet. Those figures are no different from the Ascent and Legacy, both mid-size models. Regardless of engine, the transmission comes in the guise of a CVT that simulates an eight-speed automatic.
Both the 2020 Outback and Legacy stand out with their 11.6-inch infotainment screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air-updates, there’s a lot to like for both the driver and passengers. Customers going for the Onyx Edition are treated to gloss-black detailing and water-repellent upholstery.
If it were your money, would you take the Outback over the Ascent for family duties?

Lamborghini Limits 2020 Production To 8,000 Vehicles

27 Jan 2019, 13:18 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Industry

Upon introducing the Urus, the chief executive officer of Lamborghini declared the super-SUV would double the yearly sales of the Raging Bull. But Stefano Domenicali is also interested in keeping Lamborghini exclusive, which is why production will be capped at 8,000 vehicles in 2020.
19 photosSpeaking to CarAdrive.com.au, the head honcho also suggested “no further increase in new markets.” Half of those 8,000 vehicles are allocated to the Urus, two-thirds to the Huracan, and one-third to the Aventador. Throughout 2018, sales totaled 5,750 units, an obvious improvement compared to the 3,815 cars sold in the previous year.
Turning our attention back to the production cap, don’t forget that Domenicali used to work for Ferrari. And as you all know, the Prancing Horse has a cap of its own, although not for much longer according to Louis Camilleri.
Even though he kept himself under the radar, the successor of Sergio Marchionne at Ferrari has to double earnings to 2 billion euros by 2022. No fewer than 15 new models will be launched by then, translating to a ramp-up in production. The Purosangue (codename F16X) sport utiliy vehicle is expected to be the best-selling model in the lineup.
Even Bentley renounced exclusivity by introducing the Bentayga, which shares the Touareg- and Q7-based platform with the Urus. Despite the humble origin of the vehicle architecture, both the Bentayga and Urus sell like there’s no tomorrow.
“I can also say that for us, Ferrari has always been a reference,” added Domenicali, “as well as others in the super sports car segment, but we have already achieved higher residual values for our cars, especially with some of our older models.” We’re still waiting for Lamborghini to get out of its comfort zone, bringing back classics such as the Miura and Espada with the latest amenities and technologies.
Lamborghini is looking forward to adding a fourth model to the lineup, but we’ll have to wait until 2025 or even 2027 for the inevitable to happen. Before then, the successors of the Huracan and Aventador will receive hybrid assistance for their naturally aspirated V10 and V12 powerplants.

2019 Skoda Scala Starts Production In Mlada Boleslav

10 Feb 2019, 11:13 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

Introduced in 2012, the Rapid has been replaced by the Scala as of February 2019. The first examples of the breed rolled off the assembly line in Mlada Boleslav this week, and even though it’s based on the MQB-A0 vehicle architecture, the Scala is larger than platform brothers Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1.
36 photosThe first Skoda underpinned by the MQB-A0 “perfectly embodies smart understatement” according to Bernhard Maier. The chief executive officer of the Czech automaker is convinced the Scala “has the best chance of redefining the compact segment for Skoda.”
Developed and designed in Mlada Boleslav, the compact-sized hatchback is available with full-LED headlamps and taillights alongside a suite of safety features such as Rear Traffic Alert, Side Assist, Blind Spot Detect, Adaptive Cruise Control, and autonomous emergency braking. For the time being, European customers are offered four engine options.
A single diesel complements three petrols, outputting from 90 to 150 PS (66 to 110 kW). The 1.0-liter TGI that also works on compressed natural gas will be added to the range later this year, featuring three CNG tanks in addition to the gasoline tank. Of course, every engine option comes with direct injection, stop/start, and brake energy recovery.
Going on sale in the second quarter of 2019, the first Skoda to feature the automaker’s name in block lettering on the tailgate is listed in Germany at €21,500 including VAT. For that kind of money, the wheels are made of steel and measure 16 inches. Go for the Style trim level and the 1.6 TDI, and you’re looking at €28,150.
Care to guess how much keyless start and those full-LED headlights cost? Make that €370 and €860, respectively. In many ways, the Scala also happens to be a departure from the Rapid as far as pricing is concerned. The Hyundai i30 Trend with the 1.0 T-GDI, for reference, has plenty more to offer for €21,750 than the Scala at this price point.
What the Hyundai can’t do, however, is Virtual Cockpit. Skoda offers the all-digital instrument cluster as an optional extra on higher trim levels, and the price for this upgrade is €470 plus €290 for the Bolero media system.

BMW to Hire 2,000 People for EV Production at Dingolfing

21 Feb 2019, 12:24 UTC ·
by Daniel Patrascu

Home > News > Industry

As deadlines for the launch of a new range of electric vehicles inches closer, BMW is speeding up its efforts to align the manufacturing capabilities of its plants to the new requirements.
7 photosIn Europe, one of the carmaker’s most important production hubs is the one in Dingolfing, Germany. With an output of 330,000 vehicles last year (9 percent of which plug-in hybrids), the facility is the place where the iNext will be manufactured from 2021.
To support the addition of the new model to the production lines – it will join the existing plug-in hybrid models from the 5 and 7 Series – BMW announced this week it will hire over the next few years some 2,000 new personnel.
“The BMW iNEXT brings together all key automotive technologies: it is fully electric, fully connected and highly automated,” said when making the announcement Ilka Horstmeier, the plant’s newly appointed director.
“It is the technology flagship for the future of the entire BMW Group. And we are proud that this car of the future will be built here at our plant.”
The model will be the first electric Bimmer in the new lineup to roll off the lines in Dingolfing. No details about the car’s capabilities are yet known.
iNext in prototype form is currently undergoing winter testing in the Arjeplog region in Sweden. Engineers are looking into how the car’s various systems – the electric motor, the high-voltage battery, and the cooling systems – perform in sub-zero temperatures.
How the car will look remains a mystery as well, despite BMW making public a few photos of the prototypes on location at the polar circle, and despite the reveal of the Vision iNext concept last year.
What is known is that the car is an SUV, meaning it is built on a long wheelbase to provide plenty of interior room.

2020 BMW 7 Series Begins Production in Dingolfing

11 Mar 2019, 15:00 UTC ·
by Daniel Patrascu

Home > News > Car Profile

Continuing the decades-long tradition of manufacturing the flagship luxury sedan in BMW’s lineup, the 7 Series, the German carmaker’s plant in Dingolfing this week started rolling off its assembly lines the facelift version of the model.
13 photosSince production of the 7 Series started at the plant in 1977, nearly 2 million cars started their life here, making the model one of the most successful executive cars on the market.
“The BMW 7 Series has defined our identity at this site for over 40 years. We are proud that BMW’s top model, the new BMW 7 Series Sedan, will also be built here in Dingolfin,” said in a statement to celebrate the start of production Ilka Horstmeier, the manager of the Dingolfing facility.
“Our goal as the brand’s primary plant for the luxury class is to ensure that every vehicle our experienced and competent team puts on the roads guarantees excellent quality.”
Shown for the first time in the early weeks of 2019, this new 7 Series, with the biggest kidney-grille available on the market, will be made available in two body variants – standard and long-wheelbase.
In all, the new BMW 7 Series will have eight engine configurations available. The 2020 model is also yet another BMW to be offered as a plug-in hybrid variant with a six-cylinder engine.
Fitted in the 745e and its long-wheelbase variant 745Le, the cars will use a synchronous electric motor and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and have an electric range of 50-58 kilometers (31-36 miles).
As said, the visual changes compared to the previous model are dwarfed by the 40 percent larger BMW kidney grille, adorned to either side by slimmer headlight units.
The interior of the new 7 Series continues to focus on luxury with Nappa or Merino leather used for the upholstery and fine wood for some of the interior strips.
The new BMW 7 Series runs the company's Operating System 7.0, complete with Microsoft Office 365, Skype for Business and remote software upgrades.

2020 Jeep Gladiator Enters Production In Toledo

21 Mar 2019, 7:53 UTC ·

Home > News > Car Profile

Unveiled back in November at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Gladiator is the must-have pickup right now. Jeep has started production of the mid-size workhorse in Toledo, and the first examples of the breed are preparing to hit dealership lots in the United States.
75 photosThere’s no pricing information available for the Gladiator at this moment, but we do know the trim levels start with the Sport. Given the spacious cabin and practicality of the bed, we’re expecting the newcomer to start at more than $31,445, the asking price for the cheapest Wrangler Unlimited available to order.
The Sport S, Overland, and Rubicon round off the list, and depending on configuration, maximum towing is rated at 7,650 pounds. Best-in-class accolades include maximum payload (1,600 pounds) and “the most off-road capable mid-size truck ever.” In the case of the latter, the heavy-duty Dana 44 front and rear axles are complemented by a 4×4 system with high and low range, an electronic disconnecting sway bar up front, FOX shock absorbers, and 33-inch tires developed for all-terrain driving.
The devil is in the details, and if you were wondering, the Gladiator is the only open-air pickup in the industry. The Freedom Top three-piece hard top in the bodywork’s color comes standard. Customers who want to experience the most out of the Gladiator can opt for the Sunrider soft top.
As for the oily bits, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles offers the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 as standard with ESS, 285 horsepower, and 260 pound-feet of torque. The six-speed manual can be swapped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Not long now, the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 will be added to the lineup, featuring more low-end torque than the gasoline engine.
Being a mid-size pickup with know-how from Ram, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator will have to take on the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline, and Nissan Frontier. Coincidence or not, FCA will have the highest starting price in the segment given the Jeep badge up front and go-anywhere promise of the Gladiator.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC to Be Made in Sindelfingen

2 Apr 2019, 12:04 UTC ·
by Daniel Patrascu

Home > News > Industry

It was just earlier this year that the facelift for the GLC was unveiled, but Mercedes-Benz is already thinking about the second generation of the nameplate, and where else to produce it.
19 photosWith sales of SUV models on the rise across the industry, Mercedes is considering adding a new facility to the roster of production hubs for the GLC. In an announcement made this week, the carmaker said the Sindelfingen facility, the birthplace of the AMG GT cars, among many others, will be in charge of making the new generation GLC as well.
“With production of the GLC at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant we are putting our global production network on an even more flexible and efficient footing,” said in a statement Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz executive in charge with production.
“Alongside premium and luxury class vehicles the plant is now receiving a further volume model in the much-sought-after SUV segment.”
Currently, the GLC is being assembled at several locations across the globe. In Germany, the present-day SUV comes together at the Bremen plant. Elsewhere in Europe, the car rolls-off assembly lines operated by Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland, while the Chinese variant is sourced from Beijing, with the help of Beijing Benz Automotive Corporation (BBAC) joint venture.
Mercedes did not say whether the decision to start production in Sindelfingen will affect the other manufacturing sites.
As said, the current version of the GLC has barely made it out into the open. For Mercedes, the GLC in regular and coupe variants is just one of seven SUV it currently sells, alongside the GLA, GLE, GLE Coupé, GLS, and G-Class.
As is the case with most other global players in the industry, Mercedes-Benz is also enjoying the golden years of the SUV body style. Since the first such car was introduced by the Germans, more than five million were sold. 1.5 million of them were GLC and int predecessor, GLK models.

30 Millionth Volkswagen Passat Rolls Off the Assembly Line In Emden

5 Apr 2019, 9:33 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

A silver-painted PHEV serves as the 30 millionth Passat ever made. No other mid-size car comes close to that figure, and looking at the bigger picture, production of the Volkswagen Passat overshadows that of the Beetle (both air-cooled and water-cooled).
38 photosThe station wagon-bodied Passat GTE in the following clip rolled off the assembly line in Emden, Germany on April 3rd, 2019. A different affair from what the Americans know as Passat, the European model shares most of its underpinnings with the Arteon. Being based on the MQB vehicle architecture, the Golf and Atlas are also related to the ever-popular nameplate.
“Passat has become one of the world’s greats,” said Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operating Officer of the German automaker. “At Volkswagen, we are proud of this successful model, which is still the benchmark within its class today.”
To be used “as a press and test vehicle for the international media over the coming months,” the Passat GTE Variant starts at more than €45,000 in Germany. The closest competitor in the segment, also a mid-size wagon, is the Ford Mondeo Turnier Hybrid that costs in the ballpark of €41,000.
Being a plug-in hybrid, the Passat GTE Variant has the edge thanks to a larger battery. Under the WLTP cycle, the all-electric range levels up to 55 kilometers following the mid-cycle refresh of the eco-friendly model. In addition to being green, the combined output (218 PS) isn’t too shabby at all when compared to the 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI four-cylinder turbocharged powertrains.
The eighth generation of the European model, the facelifted Passat now features Travel Assist, IQ.Drive, semi-autonomous driving technologies ranging from zero to 210 km/h, IQ.LIGHT – LED matrix headlamps, and the MIB3 touchscreen infotainment system. Volkswagen revealed the B8 in November 2014, and the engineers refer to this generation as the Typ 3G.
Turning our attention back to May 14th in 1973, that’s when Volkswagen produced the first-ever Passat at the Wolfsburg plant. The Passat replaced the Volkswagen 1600, and only the Golf (35 million) has been produced in greater numbers. Coincidence or not, the Golf also traces its roots back to the 1970s.

Aston Martin Prepares For Final Construction Phase of New DBX Factory

23 Jul 2018, 7:16 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

After acquiring the former Royal Air Force compound at St Athan from the Ministry of Defence in February 2016, Aston Martin started to convert the facility into an assembly plant in December 2016. Fast-forward to the present day, and phase two of the project has been completed according to the British automaker.
20 photosThe third and final part of the factory’s preparation is now underway, with Aston Martin confirming that production of the automaker’s first sport utility vehicle will begin in late 2019. What that means is, the DBX concept-inspired SUV with seating for at least four people will arrive at authorized dealers for the 2020 model year.
Matt Becker, the chief engineer of Aston Martin, said on the sidelines of the 2018 Goodwood Festival of Speed that the DBX is its own thing, riding on “a completely new platform.” Knowing the limited budget of the British automaker, it is more likely for the DBX to ride on a modified version of the Second Century platform.
Taking its name from the Second Century plan from 2015, the vehicle architecture is currently used by the DB11, Vantage, and DB11-based DBS Superleggera. In total, Aston Martin will have introduced “seven new models” by the end of the plan.
Given this information, Becker added that the DBX is inspired from a technical standpoint by Aston Martin’s other new models. The chief engineer also said that the suspension is on a different level, most likely referring to a system that can transition from a luxury car-like ride to a no-holds-barred sport setting at the touch of a button.
There’s still no consensus on the means of propulsion for the DBX, but given the underpinnings, the Mercedes-AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and Aston Martin 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 are the most likely candidates for the engine bay. According to chief executive officer Andy Palmer, the DBX won’t be offered with a plug-in hybrid option as it was rumored not that long ago.
Of the total workforce tasked with building the DBX in South Wales, 150 people have been employed so far. The St Athan facility is believed to “bring up to 750 new employment opportunities” to the region. For the time being, the company employs more than 2,700 people worldwide.

Lamborghini Builds 8,000th Aventador, 11,000th Huracan

18 Jul 2018, 16:41 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Back in the olden days, Lamborghini was a rarer breed compared to arch-nemesis Ferrari. And if you look at the numbers, nothing has changed since then.
12 photosThe Prancing Horse of Maranello sold a record-breaking 8,398 vehicles in 2017, with Lamborghini following behind with 3,815 deliveries in the same period. The beancounters might highlight that Ferrari is more profitable based on commercial success, but as far as the exclusivity is concerned, Lamborghini is the clear winner.
The Huracan and Aventador are the highlights of the lineup, but the Raging Bull of Sant’Agata Bolognese has another trick up its sleeve. The Urus super-SUV is the culprit, bringing Volkswagen Group technology into the Lamborghini family. Love it or hate it, the Urus is the fastest sport utility vehicle on sale today, and that’s a fact.
Even though the Urus will surpass both the Huracan and Aventador at some point in the not-so-distant future, let us rejoice with the milestone that Lamborghini would like to celebrate with us. Seven years after its introduction, the Aventador achieved an important milestone. 8,000 examples have been produced in this period, with the celebratory car going to a customer in Japan in the form of the Grigio Telesto-painted Aventador S Roadster featured in the right-hand side of the photo.
On the left, you’ll notice a Huracan with Blue Nethuns paintwork and black wheels. That’s Huracan number 11,000, destined for a customer in Italy according to Lamborghini.
In the first half of 2018, worldwide deliveries soared by 11 percent to 2,327 vehicles. The Huracan family, including the racing versions of the V10-powered supercar, increased from 1,400 in the same period of 2017 to 1,604 examples.
The Aventador, meanwhile, is on a steady course, boasting with 673 deliveries in these past six months. Figures for the Urus are not available for the time being, and for that matter, we don’t even know at what rate Lamborghini builds the super-SUV at its factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese.
On a different note, Lamborghini will turn its attention to hybrid technology for the next generations of the Huracan and Aventador. The V10 and V12 engine options will remain, aided by hybridization to extract more performance and… well… efficiency from the powertrain. The Urus, on the other hand, will welcome a plug-in hybrid version at some point in 2019.
