Tesla Model 3 Dual-Motor Coming In “Probably July” 2018

8 Apr 2018, 14:37 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

When asked about Tesla Model 3 Dual-Motor availability, Elon Musk replied on Twitter to a fellow user that “probably July” is when the all-wheel-drive option will be added to the automaker’s configurator. That’s the seventh month of 2018, which is later than the initial announcement of “Spring 2018” for the Dual-Motor.
16 photosDespite this information, Tesla has registered the first VINs for the dual-motor configuration in January 2018. In all likelihood, the Palo Alto-based automaker is getting its act together in terms of production difficulties, namely production output.
According to Elon Musk, the company needs to achieve 5,000 units per week “before adding complexity that would inhibit production ramp.” In other words, a lot of people are still waiting for their Model 3s, and shareholders aren’t happy with Tesla’s overpromising but underperforming nature. Something has to give, right?
On the flip side, the Model 3 is the best-selling electrified car in the United States of America in the first three months of the year. An estimated 8,180 examples were delivered in this quarter, which is more than the Toyota Prius Prime (6,468) and Chevrolet Bolt (4,375). The second-generation Nissan Leaf compact hatchback is still fighting for a piece of the pie, moving 2,545 units in the three-month period.
The latter half of 2018 will see Tesla start international deliveries of left-hand drive Model 3s. Come 2019, right-hand drive cars will begin rolling off the assembly line for markets that include the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, and Australia.
What’s next for Tesla after the Model 3? The Model Y compact-ish crossover holds the greatest promise, scheduled for production in late 2019 for the 2020 model year. Production plans, including the location where the Y will be manufactured, will be revealed no later than October 2018.
An electric pickup truck, semi, and the second-generation Roadster are also in the pipeline, but expect more information on those after Tesla fulfills its promises regarding the Model 3.

Ford And Chevrolet to Discontinue Fiesta, Taurus, Sonic, Impala In The U.S.

5 Apr 2018, 9:39 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Despite the cool-sounding name, the Sonic is one of the most outdated subcompact cars in the segment. And in a similar fashion, the Impala is one of the least interesting options in the full-size sedan segment. Ford also finds itself between a rock and a hard place because U.S. sales of the Fiesta and Taurus are plummeting.
32 photosIn the case of the Sonic and Fiesta, the Wall Street Journal argues that Japanese rivals are more popular with “budget-minded or young customers.” But not even the like of Toyota, Honda, and Nissan can throttle back the demand for crossovers and SUVs, two vehicle segments that happen to be more lucrative than passenger cars.
The Fiesta, as you know from a previous story, has been canceled in the United States with the introduction of the latest generation. To this effect, the EcoSport crossover and Focus will have to suffice as indirect replacements. General Motors, on the other hand, could replace the antiquated Sonic with an all-electric vehicle.
Moving on to the Taurus, the end is nigh as Ford prepares to introduce the CD6 platform on the 2020 Explorer. Developed for front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive applications, the vehicle architecture will also serve as the basis for the Lincoln Aviator. General Motors, meanwhile, plans to discontinue the Impala “in the next few years.” Not much is known about the successor, but the writing is on the wall.
Here’s Steve Majoros, marketing director for Chevrolet cars and crossovers: “Every car we have in our portfolio plays a role, every car's important and you know the only way we're going to stay the fastest-growing brand is to keep providing the vehicles that people want.” So to speak, make that more crossovers and fewer cars.
Even though we’re scratching the surface here, there’s no denying the Big Three in Detroit could use some consistency in product development and brand recognition. But bear in mind that Toyota, Honda, and Nissan aren’t giving up on sedans and other conventional body styles. With this point made, where will the American automakers find themselves when the crossover and SUV craze will bite the dust?

Jaguar Land Rover U.S. Assembly Plant Considered, Not Viable Right Now

5 Apr 2018, 6:37 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover. All three are premium brands, and Jaguar Land Rover knows that the vehicles it manufactures are more than aspirational. Be that as it may, the British automaker continues to play second fiddle to the German triad.
21 photosIn the U.S., for example, Jaguar Land Rover managed to sell 114,333 passenger cars, crossovers, and SUVs in 2017. That’s 8.8 percent more than in 2016, but still not enough compared to the German rivals. As highlighted by Wards Auto, “none of Jaguar or Land Rover’s 13 nameplates sold more than 20,000 units in the U.S.”

Alas, the chief executive officer of Jaguar Land Rover can’t make a case for a stateside assembly plant. The volume first has to grow, but that’s not all according to Ralf Speth. “If we have to export out of the U.S. 90% or 95% [of what we build here], then you will recognize it never will work from a financial point of view.”
For reference, the best-selling Jaguar Land Rover nameplate in the United States of America is the Range Rover Sport, racking up 19,153 deliveries in 2017. Volvo, on the other hand, sold 30,996 units of the mid-size XC90 in this SUV-driven market.
Speaking of Volvo, the Swedish manufacturer will open an assembly plant in South Carolina this summer. Here, the all-new S60 will be produced. What this means in the long run is that other SPA-based models can be assembled in the United States.
For the time being, the U.S. plant isn’t on the cards for Jaguar Land Rover, but it’s under consideration for when demand makes the investment feasible. As business stands at the present moment, the British conglomerate has manufacturing facilities in the United Kingdom, China, India, and Brazil.
An all-new facility will open by the end of the year in Nitra, Slovakia. In addition to these locations, the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria is where the E-Pace compact SUV and I-Pace electric SUV are assembled.

Koenigsegg Agera RS Ends Production, Two Final Edition Models Remaining

5 Apr 2018, 7:15 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Founded 24 years ago by Christian von Koenigsegg, the Angelholm-based hypercar manufacturer prepares to close another chapter in its tale of ultra-exclusive works of wonder. The Agera RS, introduced at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, is now out of production. In total, 25 examples of the V8-powered blunderbuss have been made.
13 photos“To those who managed to order one of the 25 cars,” the Swedish automaker would like to “thank you for your trust in our vision and brand” and “congratulate you on your foresight, your acumen, and your truly unique car.” And what a car the Agera RS is, racking up no less than five world speed records in these past three years!
The most important accolade is the world record for the fastest production car ever made, maxing out at 284.5 miles per hour (457.9 km/h) on a closed road in Nevada. After all, what did you expect from a hypercar that develops 1,160 horsepower from the get-go and 1,341 ponies when specified with the 1-megawatt package?
In addition to the extreme performance and out-of-this-world design, the Agera RS happens to be the first Koenigsegg federalized to U.S. motor vehicle standards. Before this turning point in the automaker’s history, Koenigsegg models were imported in the land of God Bless America under the “Show or Display” clause.
“With the RS series complete, the Agera line has two more cars to be built and delivered – two Final Edition vehicles.” The Final Edition premiered two years ago at the Geneva Motor Show, and in total, the production run consists of three examples. Koenigsegg describes these models as “super-bespoke,” which is a bit of an understatement considering that every Koenigsegg is unique in its own right.
Emerged from the shadow of the One:1, the Agera RS rides into the sunset, leaving Koenigsegg to concentrate on the Regera. The plug-in hybrid hypercar is the automaker’s most ambitious project to date, with production limited to 80 units. If you were planning on buying one, tough luck! All of them were sold, with prices starting at €2.1 million a pop.

2018 Honda Accord Production To Be Put On Idle Over Slow Sales, Large Inventory

2 Apr 2018, 7:49 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Manufactured in Marysville, Ohio together with the Acura ILX and TLX compact and mid-size sedans, the tenth-generation Accord is the best one there’s ever been. Even though it’s a great car in a segment full of competitive alternatives, the Accord will have to take a step back as far as the production volume is concerned.
28 photosCiting a spokesman of the Japanese automaker, Automotive News reports that Honda plans to idle production “for 11 days over the next four months in response to sluggish U.S. sales and swollen inventories.” In greater detail, that would be two days of idling per month, along with a five-day extension of the plant’s annual shutdown.
“This is just really business as usual and we're adjusting production down to match the market condition at this moment,” commented the spokesman, but the truth of the matter is that mid-size sedans aren’t selling as they used to five, ten years ago.
Take the Accord as a prime example of how the increasing demand for crossovers and SUVs affect other automotive segments. In 2013 and 2008, Honda was selling 366,678 and 372,789 examples per year in the United States, respectively. In 2017, Honda made do with 322,655 sales in this part of the world.
Inventory levels are also high, with Automotive News reporting a 104-day supply in March. By comparison, U.S. dealers had approximately 80 days worth of cars and truck on hand on average, which is more than a year earlier. What happened, though?
In addition to crossovers and SUVs, Honda dealers told the publication that “slow sales have been prompted in part by a lack of attractive lease offers.” That’s a bad move on Honda’s part, more so if you bear in mind the Toyota Camry is flying out of the showrooms, Adding insult to injury, the Nissan Altima is new from the ground up for the 2019 model year.
As we wait for Nissan to disclose the pricing of the sixth-generation Altima, here’s how the Camry and Accord stack up against each other in terms of pricing: $23,495 and $23,570.

Lamborghini To Add Fourth Model, Coming No Sooner Than 2025

28 Mar 2018, 10:00 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Urus, Huracan, Aventador. These are the models that Lamborghini offers in this day and age. Come 2025, the fourth will be added according to Stefano Domenicali.
20 photosSpeaking to Motoring, the head honcho of the Raging Bull made it clear that “we’re going to think of introducing another model… but in the second part [of the decade] – 2025 to 2030 – in that range.” The former team principal of Scuderia Ferrari explains this decision with growth. Unless Lamborghini sells more cars per year, there can’t be a case for the fourth member of the range.
Another big question regarding the newcomer is positioning. Where will it slot? There have been reports of a sub-Huracan supercar, as well as the return of the Miura. There’s even talk of an all-electric sports sedan riding on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) that’s being developed as we speak by Porsche and Audi.
When asked about positioning, Domenicali replied: “Still under discussion. We see a lot of competitors attacking for the lower side of it… But we still have the time to discuss.” Read what you will into these words, but there’s no mistaking the Volkswagen Group wants to see the sales volume grow before green-lighting the fourth model.
Over the course of 2017, Lamborghini delivered more than 3,800 cars all around the world. The introduction of the Urus will see the volume balloon to 5,000 vehicles. In 2019, when the SUV's production line at the Sant’Agata Bolognese plant will be at full capacity, the Italian automaker expects to hit a sales figure of 7,500.
In the long run, Domenicali told the publication that he sees Lamborghini moving 10,000 cars per year. That’s bold when you think about it, more so if you consider the Gallardo sold 14,022 examples over the course of a decade. To this day, the Gallardo is the best-selling Lamborghini ever made. The Huracan is catching up, though, already numbering in the 10,000s.
On that note, what would you like the fourth Lamborghini model to be? Perhaps something inspired by the Estoque Concept (pictured)?

2019 Honda Insight Revealed In Production-ready Form

27 Mar 2018, 6:38 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Previewed by a near-production concept at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the all-new Insight will also drop by the 2018 New York International Auto Show. But this time around, Honda is bringing the production model that will hit dealers later this year.
17 photosFirst of all, let’s talk specifications. The two-motor hybrid powertrain is related to the one found in the Accord Hybrid, combining electric propulsion with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The setup is capable of delivering 151 horsepower and 197 pound-feet (267 Nm) of torque, so yeah, don’t expect a thrilling driving experience.
What you can expect, on the other hand, is up to 55 miles per gallon in city driving, which is not bad at all for the compact sedan that acts as the heir-apparent of the Civic Hybrid. As you can tell from the photo gallery, the 15.1-cu.ft. trunk rivals that of ICE-only competitors. The secret is the placement of the lithium-ion battery, which you can find beneath the rear seats that fold 60/40 on the EX and Touring trim levels.

“What do I get from the entry-level Insight LX?” Honda is quite generous with this fellow, as follows: full-LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights and taillamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, push-button start, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth, Pandora, and a folding rear seat.
Moving up to the Insight LX adds two more speakers, 8.0 inches for the Display Audio touchscreen, SiriusXM radio, and Smart Entry. Customers who are willing to spend top dollar on the range-topping Touring are treated to 17-inch alloys, LED fog lights, power moonroof, heated seats with power adjustment, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, 4G LTE Wi-Fi module, 10 speakers, the lot.
Underpinned by the Civic’s platform, the Insight brags with an aluminum hood, additional sound insulation, and variable-ratio dual-pinion electric power steering. Upgrading to the Touring improves the suspension system (MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear) with liquid-sealing compliance bushings at both ends.
As we wait for Honda to publish the pricing for the 2019 Insight, it’s worth mentioning that the newcomer is built in the United States. Assembly will take place in Greensburg, Indiana (Civic and CR-V), the battery comes from Marysville Auto Plant in Ohio, and the 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine is made in Anna, Ohio.

10,000th Lamborghini Huracan Rolls Off The Line In Sant’Agata Bolognese

14 Mar 2018, 8:14 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

There’s a party going on at the Lamborghini factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese! Four years after it entered production, the Huracan now numbers in the 10,000s. The celebratory model is an LP 640-4 Performante sporting the same Verde Mantis paint job as the Huracan GT3 that won its class at the 2018 Daytona 24 hours race.
24 photosFor the sake of making comparisons, the Huracan is breathing down the Gallardo’s neck as far as production figures are concerned. Manufactured from 2003 to 2013, the Huracan’s predecessor and the best-selling Lamborghini totals 14,022 examples.
Greater things are to be expected from the Huracan, with the Raging Bull achieving a record year in 2017 with 2,642 deliveries out of a total of 3,815. That’s 12 percent more Huracan units delivered in ‘17 over ‘16. With the arrival of the Performante Spyder, you can bet your two cents that 2018 will turn out to be another record year. Oh, and don’t forget the Urus is in high demand too.
At the present moment, the Huracan is produced in six derivates. Available as a fixed head or with a soft top, rear- and all-wheel-drive, the V10-powered bruiser holds records at eight different circuits around the world. On the flip side, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS stole the Huracan Performante’s Nurburgring record in September 2017, posting a lap of 6:47 compared to the 6:52 of the Lamborghini.
On a related note, the successor of the Huracan is due in 2022 with hybrid assistance. The V10 will soldier on with natural aspiration according to chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani, and as ever, rear- and all-wheel-drive models will be offered. Till then, there’s a mid-cycle refresh coming in late 2018 or early 2019, with the Huracan expected to get rear-wheel steering for improved handling.
There’s also a plug-in hybrid Urus in the pipeline, as well as a replacement for the Aventador scheduled to go official in 2020. In the meantime, we’re still waiting for Lamborghini to take the veils off the 800-horsepower Aventador SVJ.

Volkswagen Passat Production Idled At Chattanooga As Sales Drop In The U.S.

13 Mar 2018, 13:27 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Related to the Euro-spec Passat in name but nothing else, the mid-size sedan that Volkswagen sells in the United States has lost its shine. It’s an old car through and through, and not even the V6-powered GT can cut it against the newer competition.
13 photosVolkswagen’s three-box model also finds itself between a rock and a hard place, as demand for sedans keeps slowing down in favor of crossovers and sport utility vehicles. To this effect, the Chattanooga plant where the Passat is made will idle for two weeks this spring, with the automaker re-tooling for increased Atlas production.
Plant spokesman Keith King had a chat with the Times Free Press, claiming that “it’s not a secret the market is shifting from sedans and passenger cars to family-friendly SUVs.” The two weeks of idling “allows us to correct course a little bit,” which is a tongue-in-cheek remark considering what Volkswagen has been up to.
The numbers don’t lie. From a high point of 6,997 examples sold in the United States in February 2014, the Passat dropped to 4,380 units in February 2016, then stumbled to 3,036 cars in the second month of 2017. For reference, the Toyota Camry moved 30,865 copies in February 2018. How can you compete with that?
Despite the downfall of the Passat, overall sales of the automaker in the United States are up 5.7 percent compared to the first two months of 2017. SUVs are to thank for this substantial upswing. The compact-sized Tiguan crossover is the sweetheart of the German brand in this part of the world, with utility vehicles accounting for 54 precent of all Volkswagen of America sales in February 2018.
According to Volkswagen of America, the non-production periods for Chattanooga are planned for March 26th to 29th and April 2nd to 5th. And despite ongoing media rumors of layoffs, spokesperson King assured that no one is being sent off. At the present moment, 3,450 people are employed at the Tennessee-based plant.

Tesla's Model 3 Production Deadline Hangs on Shipping Equipment from Germany

13 Feb 2018, 13:00 UTC · by Vlad Mitrache
/ Home / News / Industry

4 photosThe Tesla Model 3 has had a rough start in life by any standards, and the fact all eyes were on it sure didn't make it any easier for anyone involved in the process.
Elon Musk admitted to suffering from a case of depression during the time his company was struggling to get out of what it had called “production hell,” but that was to be expected considering he neglected sleep to work side by side with the rest of the team.
The official stance now is that Tesla is out of the woods despite failing to meet its production deadlines after pushing them back several times. Right now it's gunning for 2,500 units a week by the end of the first quarter (that would be March 31) and double that by the end of the second quarter.
In the meantime, the company has just come off the worst quarter in its history regarding losses, which has forced the decision of postponing the launch of the base Model 3, the one with the 200-mile range and $35,000 entry price, until the end of the year. The slower than anticipated production is already hampering Tesla's income, so rolling out a vehicle with a much lower profit margin wouldn't be a wise choice.
Now, though, we hear the 2,500 units for the end of March target might be in danger as well. The Gigafactory plant in Reno where the battery cells and modules for the Model 3 are being built is missing a key component of its lineup if the goal is to be met.
The automated system for module production is currently sitting at its German subsidiary Grohmann Automation, some 5,350 miles and an ocean away from where it should be. The good news is everything is working, the bad news is it needs to be taken apart, transported, and put back together, all under the pressure of the end of Q1 deadline.
Here it is in Elon Musk's words, during his conference call with financial analysts: “That's got to be disassembled, brought over to the Gigafactory, and re-assembled and then brought into operation at the Gigafactory. It's not a question of whether it works or not. It's just a question of disassembly, transport, and reassembly,”

It looks like Tesla is playing it dangerously close once again, and it will be interesting to see the impact on its shares value if the deadlines aren't met for the umpteenth time. Because, as far as we know, there aren't any rocket launches planned just before March 31, right?
