Here’s How Magna Steyr Builds the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G 63 In Austria

Building a sport utility vehicle doesn’t come cheap, especially a body-on-frame legend in the off-road such as the Geländewagen. The high-quality parts, bundles of technological wizardry, and labor costs in Austria are a few of the culprits, but nevertheless, the G-Class is worth your hard-earned cash.
54 photos
The cheapest specification starts at $124,500 in the United States, but Europeans are treated to the more affordable G 350 d at €95,021.50 in Germany. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the G 63 takes the crown in every single aspect. But have you ever wondered how the G-Class is manufactured?
Since the beginning, the Geländewagen was manufactured in Graz by Magna Steyr with close attention to detail. In other words, the production output doesn’t match that of regular SUVs. In July 2017, the 300,000th example of the breed rolled off the assembly line, and the numbers keep increasing since the arrival of the new G.
Shmee150 (a.k.a. Tim Burton) bought one of these gentle giants, and thanks to his status in the automotive world and YouTube creators community, the three-pointed star invited him to check out how the W463 is manufactured. “Wait, wasn’t W463 used for the previous generation?” You’re right, dearest reader, but the higher-ups decided to keep the codename instead of switching to W464.
The production process starts with the bodies of the G-Class arriving at Magna Steyr, then the specialized personnel builds the vehicle, one part and subassembly at time. Among others, Shmee150 was allowed to fit the steering wheel and airbag to the G 63 of his dreams.
In regard to suck-squeeze-bang-blow, the metallic black SUV features a 4.0-liter V8 with twin turbocharging that originates from Affalterbach. Codenamed M177, this engine differs from the Mercedes-AMG GT series through the wet-sump lubrication system and AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission.
Tuned to 585 PS (577 horsepower) and 850 Nm (627 pound-feet) of torque, the M177 is more potent than the M157 in the previous generation of the G 63. On that note, the G 65 has been discontinued because Mercedes-AMG is focused on V8s and electrification.
The M279 engine, a 6.0-liter V12 with twin turbocharging, will be discontinued at the end of the production cycle of the S 65. Tobias Moers, the head honcho of Mercedes-AMG, also confirmed the S 65 will be discontinued with the arrival of the W223 generation S-Class.

Groupe PSA Starts Production At New Kenitra Plant In Morocco

21 Jun 2019, 16:24 UTC ·

Home > News > Industry

Announced in June 2015, the Kenitra plant in Morocco is now operational. The all-new 208 is the first vehicle to go into production there, based on the CMP vehicle architecture that Peugeot also utilizes in the 2008 crossover.
65 photos
From mid-2020, Groupe PSA promises to increase production capacity to 200,000 vehicles. Kenitra will serve customers in 80 markets, and the 208 is also manufactured in Trnava, Slovakia.
“The performance of the Kenitra plant should enable it to produce models,” said the French group, meaning that the 208 will be joined by other Common Modular Platform nameplates such as the 2008, Opel Corsa, and DS 3 Crossback. For the time being, the DS is manufactured in Poissy, France while the Corsa is made in Zaragoza, Spain.
In regard to the e-208, e-2008, and Corsa-e, and DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, the biggest challenge in Europe is battery supply. Factories in Europe such as Deutsche Accumotive don’t make the cells, which are supplied by Asian companies. The biggest players in this industry are Samsung SDI, Panasonic, CATL, and LG Chem. According to UK managing director David Peel, 40 percent of the cost is allocated to the batteries.
The four models mentioned in the previous paragraph utilize a 50-kWh battery, matching the capacity of the 2019 Renault Zoe. At least in Europe, the Nissan Leaf is the best-selling electric vehicle while the Renault Zoe came in on second in 2018 Zoe. In a distant third place, the Volkswagen e-Golf is on its last legs considering the ID.3 electric hatchback is right around the corner.
Turning our attention back to Kenitra, “Morocco is a historic and strategic market for our Group and its four brands” according to member of the board Jean-Christophe Quémard. “We are forging a unique partnership in Morocco’s automotive industry, thanks to the help of all our partners and the support of the Moroccan authorities.”
By mid-2020, Groupe PSA expects to employ 4,500 workers at the Kenitra plant. All told, make that 20,000 direct and indirect jobs. French rival Renault also operates two facilities in Morocco, namely the production plants in Tangiers and Casablanca.

A Qashqai Is Nissan Sunderland’s 10 Millionth Vehicle

20 Jun 2019, 20:18 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Industry

Founded in 1984, Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK is headquartered in Sunderland. Built on the site of a former RAF airfield, the factory where the Qashqai is manufactured is complemented by the Japanese automaker's distribution center and lots of on-site suppliers.
21 photos
Production at Sunderland started in 1986 with the Bluebird, then the Primera and Micra followed in 1990 and 1992. As of May 2019, the Micra and Primera are listed on second and third in terms of total production at the British plant. The Qashqai reigns supreme even though it’s been introduced in 2006, tallying more than 3,416,500 examples of the breed.
33 years on, Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK reaches the ten million mark with a Vivid Blue-painted Qashqai Tekna. The vehicle is optioned with ProPilot semi-autonomous driving technologies. “Building ten million vehicles is a tremendous achievement for everyone associated with the plant,” said Steve Marsh, vice president of manufacturing at Sunderland.
“Together we are determined to continue to drive up the high quality standards our customers have come to expect over the last three decades,” concluded the official, but we don’t agree with everything. For starters, continuously variable transmissions built by JATCO are as unreliable as CVTs get. There’s also the matter of Renault, which took its toll on build quality ever since the alliance was formed.
The Infiniti Q30 is also manufactured in Sunderland, a Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class with a different body shell, interior, and badging. Does it come as a surprise this crossover isn’t selling well? The luxed-up brand is leaving the western part of Europe in 2020 because of poor sales, totaling 5,800 vehicles in 2018.
Turning our attention back to production, Sunderland is also the place where the Leaf is manufactured for the United Kingdom and Europe. The all-electric hatchback is joined by the Juke, which will enter the second generation for the 2020 model year.
Parked bumper to bumper, Nissan claims the 10 million vehicles manufactured in Sunderland would stretch around the globe. Considering that Earth has a circumference of 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles), the automaker’s statement appears to be correct.

Tesla Quietly Discontinues the Model 3 Long Range With Rear-Wheel Drive

17 Jun 2019, 18:26 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

Once again, Tesla shocks the Model 3 community with a change that doesn’t make sense. The Long Range with rear-wheel drive is no longer available to order, one of the best propositions in the lineup.
8 photos
Customers on a budget are treated to the Model 3 Standard Range Plus with rear wheel drive, and that’s a bit of a shame if you remember that Tesla no longer offers the Model 3 Standard Range online. As a consequence of these changes, only the Long Range and Performance are available with all-wheel drive.
It isn’t known if this change is temporary, but Tesla did mention the Fremont plant “immediately halted” production for some reason or another. “Next week, we will inform you of the orders we can no longer deliver and the alternative we can offer,” said the Palo Alto-based automaker in an e-mailed statement.
If you’re looking for a reason, Tesla might’ve switched to all-wheel drive for the Long Range because the profit margin is higher. In terms of acceleration to 60 miles per hour, the rear- and all-wheel drive are extremely close. The difference boils down to five-tenths of a second (4.9 versus 4.4 seconds), and pricing starts at $49,000 before savings for the dual-motor option.
The Performance is $59,900 in the United Statesof America, and at the other end of the spectrum, the Standard Range Plus retails at $39,900. Both the Long Range and Performance promise 310 miles, the distance from Washington D.C. to Niles, Ohio. Not bad for an electric vehicle, but there’s room for improvement.
As far as Tesla is concerned, the Model S is king thanks to a maximum range of 370 miles. A refresh is coming for the 2020 model year, and chances are the Model S could get even better. The Model X is capable of up to 325 miles, and similarly to the sedan, the full-size crossover utility vehicle takes its mojo from a 100-kWh battery pack.

Dating back to 1968, the XJ has served Jaguar well. Sales aren’t great for the time being, but Jaguar is working on a replacement for the X351 that came out in 2010. The full-size sedan is nothing but a shadow of its former self, now sold exclusively with diesel engines in the United Kingdom and Europe.
14 photosPriced at $76,000 before destination in the United States, the luxurious feline for this part of the world is available with the supercharged V6 and supercharged V8 that Jaguar can’t sell any longer in the European Union due to ever-stricter emissions regulations. Considering the age of those gasoline engines, we’re not surprised by this unfortunate turn of events for the XJ.
Confirmed to slot above the J-Pace as the flagship of the Jaguar lineup, the next generation has been signed off in the earliest part of 2018. There’s talk the XJ will go electric in 2020, and chances are Jaguar will make the switch to a dual-motor powertrain considering the success of the I-Pace crossover with a cab-forward design for much greater space in the cabin.
Autocar.co.uk understands that Castle Bromwich will shut off the XJ production line on July 5th after manufacturing more than 120,000 examples of the eighth generation. A spokesman from the British automaker confirmed to the motoring publication the XJ nameplate will soldier on, but didn’t go into detail about what the future holds for the full-size sedan.
Jaguar is no stranger to reinventing itself. The X350 from 2002 to 2007 embraced aluminum while the X351 said farewell to the three-box design of previous generations for a sloping profile. The XJ received a mid-cycle refresh in 2015, adding LED lighting, InControl Touch Pro infotainment, a bangin’ stereo, and lots of driving-assist technology.
Mercedes-Benz is also working on a full-size sedan with all-electric propulsion, related to the next generation of the S-Class. The competitor to beat, however, is the Tesla Model S from Fremont, California. The Palo Alto-based automaker is developing the second redesign of the Model S, expected to debut for the 2020 model year in September.

Mercedes-Benz Adds A-Class Sedan to Production Roster in Rastatt

24 May 2019, 12:03 UTC ·

Home > News > Car Profile

After it launched in 2018 the new versions of both the hatchback and sedan versions of the A-Class, Mercedes-Benz officially kicked off production of the sedan at its facility in Rastatt, Germany.
29 photosThe carmaker initially hinted last year that the A-Class sedan should be on the market by 2019, but somehow the start of production got pushed to May. The car will roll off the same assembly lines that create other compact cars like the A-Class hatchback and the GLA.
In all, there will be six versions of the car available with different engine and transmission configuration. The range starts with the A200 (six-speed manual transmission), which is priced at €30,916, and ends with the A 250 4MATIC with a seven-speed automatic and a starting price of €39,525.
An Edition 1 trim will be made available for the first year of production, for an extra €7,021 on top of the base price. The package will add copper color highlights on the exterior and in the interior, 19-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheel and LED headlamps, among other things.
All new A-Class cars are fitted with the new technology suite called Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) which marks the carmaker's departure from the aging COMAND system it used until recently.
The start of production for the model took place at the same time when the Rastatt facility celebrated the five millionth car made since the plant’s opening in 1997. The rate at which cars are assembled here is likely to increase with the addition of an EQ-branded car in the coming years, says site manager Thomas Geier.
“The production of the five millionth Mercedes-Benz compact vehicle highlights the Rastatt plant's importance as the lead plant for Mercedes-Benz's compacts, in addition to which it is ideally prepared for an upcoming compact electric vehicle of the EQ product and technology brand,” he said.

Mercedes-AMG Expected To Discontinue SL 63 At the End Of May 2019

22 May 2019, 19:15 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

In terms of convertibles, you’re spoiled for choice by Mercedes-Benz and the mad professors in Affalterbach. But towards the end of May 2019, the SL 63 will cease to exist until the next generation comes along with know-how from the GT.
10 photosThe R231 can trace its roots back to 2012 for the 2013 model year. Designed in 2007 and produced in Bremen, the current generation of the SL-Class received a mid-cycle refresh in 2016 for the 2017 model year. Even though Mercedes-AMG prepares to bid farewell to V12-powered models, the V8 soldiers on with 4.0 liters of displacement.
Mercedes-Benz Passion understands from Affalterbach that Mercedes-AMG is pulling out the SL 63 to focus on the successor of the R231. Speaking of which, the SL 63 didn’t receive the 4.0-liter V8 from the GT but relies on the M157 with 5.5 liters of displacement.
Not as powerful nor as torquey as the M177, the M157 is matched to the AMG Speedshift MCT 7 instead of the nine-speed transmission in M177-engined models. These being said, the truth is that AMG was too focused on the GT and A 45 to keep the SL-Class as fresh as a daisy.
There are far better open-top grand tourers out there right now, including the Bentley Continental GT Convertible and Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante. Worse still, today’s SL-Class doesn’t hold a candle to the trailblazing W198 from the 1950s. At that point in time, the Sport-Leicht in 300 SL flavor was the fastest production car in the world (260 km/h or 160 mph).
“Advanced today” and “admired forever” according to Mercedes-Benz, the most affordable SL in the United States is the 450 at $89,150 excluding destination. Level up to the 550 and you’re looking at $113,550 while the 63 retails at $154,450 excluding destination.
As mentioned beforehand, the SL 65 is no longer available because both AMG and Mercedes-Benz aren't willing to go ahead with the M279. The twin-turbo V12 is based on the M275 from the previous decade, and that one also happens to be based on the M137 from the 1990s. Without further beating around the bush, Daimler AG has no incentive to bring an antiquated design up to date.

Land Rover Cancels Range Rover SV Coupe

31 Jan 2019, 9:16 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

Revealed in March 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show, the SV Coupe is SUV royalty even for Range Rover. But the three-door luxobarge with frameless doors has been discontinued despite the fact Land Rover has been testing the SV Coupe both on the road and at the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
28 photosPart of the reason has something to do with the starting price. £240,000 from the get-go and 575 ponies might seem too much for too little, but the 999-vehicle production run does ensure exclusivity. On the flip side, Land Rover had to develop a different stamping process for the SV Coupe.
A statement from Land Rover – published by Autocar.co.uk – informs that the British automaker has taken the difficult decision “to inform our customers that the Range Rover SV Coupe will not proceed into production.” Looking at the bigger picture, that’s money down the drain right there!
“Land Rover is focusing its resources and investment on the next generation of world-class products,” including all-new platforms and electrification ranging from mild- to hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. Nevertheless, the Special Vehicle Operations division has nothing to do because of this unexpected announcement.
“SVO is continuing to develop exciting cars that push the boundaries of luxury, performance, and capability.” As much as the British automaker tries to sugarcoat this matter, Special Vehicle Operations was looking forward to introducing the SV Coupe as the first nameplate to be manufactured from the ground up at the Technical Center in Coventry.
Their latest product is the XE SV Project 8, a compact executive sedan with 600 ponies from the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that develops 575 horsepower in the F-Type SVR. The go-faster model is limited to 300 examples of the breed, which makes it more common than the F-Type Project 7 (250 units delivered worldwide).
Instead of an ending note, think for a moment about the competitors of the Range Rover SV Coupe. There’s the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, and plenty more in the pipeline, including the Ferrari Purosangue. Although Land Rover didn’t specify it, we have a sneaking suspicion the SV Coupe was too late to the party.

Land Rover Cancels Discovery SVX Too

15 Feb 2019, 11:05 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

Before the exposé of the Defender’s interior, Land Rover proved that it’s struggling to make ends meet by announcing the Range Rover SV Coupe wouldn’t go into production. No credible explanation has been given, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
32 photosNot even a month later, Land Rover confirmed the Discovery SVX had been canceled too. This is the biggest bummer one could expect, more so if you remember the Discovery SVX is the only one packing the supercharged V8.
Revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show and developed by Special Vehicle Operations, the off-road leviathan embodies what the Discovery should’ve been from the get-go. Some people might argue that Land Rover is better off focusing on the models that matter, but on the other hand, the pre-tax loss for Q4 2018 reveals a different story.
Jaguar Land Rover lost £3.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2018, including a £3.1 billion charge adjusting the value of the automaker’s capitalized investments. In this quarter, worldwide sales were down 9,845 vehicles compared to the three-month period of 2017.
Autocar.co.uk highlights “the firm would still be pushing ahead with the SVX badge in the future, on unspecified models.” Last time we’ve heard something on the subject, SVO suggested the I-Pace electric crossover would be a-OK in SVX, SVA, and SVX flavors.
The Special Vehicle Operations recently lost Wayne Burgess, design boss of the division. Chinese automaker Geely snatched him at the beginning of February 2019, ending an 18-year spell at Jaguar Land Rover.
With 518 horsepower (525 PS) on tap, lots of off-road hardware, and bespoke touches inside, the Discovery SVX would cost in the ballpark of £100,000 if Land Rover were to build it. The SVD6 starts at £57,005 in the United Kingdom, and the HSE Luxury hikes up the price to £70,405 before options.
By comparison, the Range Rover SV Coupe should’ve cost £240,000 and feature 575 PS (567 horsepower) from the higher-output version of the supercharged V8. In the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, the eight-cylinder blunderbuss develops 600 PS (592 horsepower).

Tesla Model 3 Production Exceeds 200,000 Units

In July 2017, Tesla delivered 30 examples of the breed, the first Model 3 sedans entitled to wear a license plate. Fast-forward to February 2019, and production exceeds 203,744 units of the world’s favorite EV.
6 photosSelling better than the Nissan Leaf is one thing, but at this rate, the Model 3 will catch up to the compact hatchback in no time at all. Bloomberg highlights “the only problem is that Elon Musk and company can’t produce enough of them.”
Approximately 5,589 units roll off the Fremont assembly line each week, while VINs registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration total just under 225,000. So far this quarter, Tesla already produced 45,005 units of the Model 3. The total for Q4 2018 is 61,394, a record-breaking output expected to be surpassed in a month's time.
Not everything is rosy at Tesla, though. Even though every Model 3 variant in the U.S. is $1,100 cheaper, the federal tax credit now accounts for $3,750 of the price. In other words, the most affordable Model 3 costs $34,850 including the government's incentive. But remember what Elon Musk said a few years ago? Before the tax credit, the electric sedan should’ve cost $35,000 with rear-wheel drive and the 220-mile battery.
At the present moment, the Mid Range battery option with RWD is the cheapest option, promising 264 miles as per the Environmental Protection Agency. Before savings ($4,300 for gas savings and $3,750 for the federal incentive), you’re looking at $42,900.
The first European shipment of the Model 3 arrived in Zeebrugge port in Belgium at the beginning of February 2019, but Tesla is far from satisfying demand in this part of the world. Over the next few months, the Palo Alto-based automaker expects to ramp up Zeebrugge shipments to 3,000 Model 3 units per week.
Order books further opened in China, and some of the differences from the European and American models is the addition of the GB (Guobiao) charging port. Over in Europe, customers get CCS (Combined Charging System) because the Supercharger network is fairly limited over there.
