Sustainability award for SEAT in recognition of its commitment to natural gas as an alternative fuel for sustainable mobility

Sustainability award for SEAT in recognition of its commitment to natural gas as an alternative fuel for sustainable mobility

MADRID, 27-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — SEAT has been recognised for its commitment to natural gas as an alternative fuel by the Sedigas, the Spanish Gas Association. The recognition is in the form of the “Energy and Sustainability” award, which was given to the car maker at a ceremony at the Reina Sofía National Museum of Art in Madrid. The ceremony was attended by José Domínguez Abascal, Secretary of State for Energy from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Luca de Meo, SEAT President, who has accepted the award.

Sedigas’ acknowledgement is for SEAT’s strong commitment to natural gas as an alternative fuel for sustainable mobility. In Europe, SEAT has the broadest range of vehicles that run with compressed natural gas (CNG), with three models produced in the brand’s Martorell factory — the Leon, Ibiza and the Arona, which is the world’s only CNG powered SUV. In terms of sales, the company has tripled its sales of CNG vehicles in 2018. Furthermore, SEAT has also announced plans to increase the production of gas driven vehicles from currently 90 to 250 per day by investing 6 million euros in its Martorell factory.

Commenting on the recognition, Luca de Meo, President of SEAT, said:

“At SEAT we are convinced that natural gas is a key element in the transition toward sustainable mobility. Now is the time to take a step further and boost the creation of infrastructure and make gas a source of renewable energy that can be injected in the network and promote its consumption. Furthermore, biogas and biomethane production represent an opportunity for reducing the rate of emissions derived from transportation.”

He added further: “the goal we must set ourselves is that biomethane be considered a source of renewable fuel, and this is where certificates of origin play a fundamental role. Inexpensive cars that run on clean energy and can be refueled quickly in a few minutes already exist – they run on gas and biogas.”

Through SEAT’s initiative “Life Methamorphosis” the company is sourcing renewable gas for its vehicles from solid urban waste from the city of Barcelona and animal organic waste from a farm in Lleida. The company is also partnering with Aqualia to turn waste water into biomethane. Those projects and initiatives by SEAT aim at promoting the circular economy, energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

In this regard, establishing the certificate of origin for the production of biogas is of great potential. A system like that would make the development of the industry in Spain much easier, just as in other EU countries. Being able to transfer these certificates among sectors would also create many possibilities for the transport industry to guarantee a zero impact in terms of “well to wheel” CO2 emissions throughout the entire life cycle of a vehicle.

The European Union considers CNG fueled mobility as environmentally efficient. Vehicles that run on natural gas can access European cities when there are traffic restrictions in place due to pollution.

thyssenkrupp invests 60 million euros on industrialization of new damper technology

ESSEN, 25-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — thyssenkrupp opened a new automotive components plant in Sibiu, Romania which will produce dampers for customers including Daimler, Jaguar Land Rover and Porsche. thyssenkrupp invested around 60 million euros to build the new damper site.

“This is an investment not only in the targeted expansion of our European production network but also in newly obtained customer projects and new technologies. In Sibiu we will manufacture dampers to the highest technical standards for installation in our customers’ premium models. At the same time we are in the process of industrializing an entirely new generation of dampers for highly automated intelligent chassis systems,” commented Dr. Karsten Kroos, CEO of thyssenkrupp’s automotive division.

Active dampers of this kind provide an extremely smooth and comfortable driving experience by responding proactively to counter the forces acting on the chassis.

The new plant is an extension to the existing production site. thyssenkrupp produces both components and complete damper systems for automotive OEMs and aftermarket suppliers. The company’s investment in the new site has created more than 350 new jobs at the Sibiu location, which now employs around 1,000 people. thyssenkrupp has been producing dampers in Sibiu since 1996.

thyssenkrupp is one of the best-established manufacturers of damper systems. The company produces and markets chassis components under the Bilstein brand at eight locations in Europe, the USA and China. The damper business is part of thyssenkrupp’s components division, which produces high-tech components for the automotive and machinery sectors with over 34,000 employees worldwide. Its Components Technology business area achieved sales of around 7.9 billion euros in fiscal year 2017/2018.

Continental calls on its employees across Europe to vote in the European Parliament election 2019

Continental calls on its employees across Europe to vote in the European Parliament election 2019

HANOVER, 14-May-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Continental calls on its employees across Europe to vote in the European election, which will take place between May 23 and 26, 2019. The European Parliament election 2019 is going to be the 9th parliamentary election since the first direct elections held in 1979.

Dr. Elmar Degenhart, Chairman of the Executive Board Continental AG

Commenting on the European Parliament election 2019, Continental CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart, said:

“For decades, the European Union has been the most successful foundation yet for freedom and peace in Europe and our prosperity. In global competition, we can only win together as self-assured Europeans. Anybody who does not vote is allowing others to determine their fate. Europe’s voice counts most when we all amplify it with our own.”

Dr. Ariane Reinhart who is Executive Board member for Human Relations at Continental , commented further:

Dr. Ariane Reinhart, Member of the Executive Board, Human Relations, Director of Labor Relations, Sustainability

“Two thirds of German exports go to European countries. This means customers in Europe ensure that we have work here. A strong EU that is developing well secures the future of our jobs.”

The European Single Market is Continental’s strongest market in terms of sales. Continental’s turnover in Europe is €21.8 billion in 2018, which represents 49 percent of the company’s global sales of €44.4 billion for that year. In terms of employees, more than 50% (57 percent or roughly 140,000 staff ) of its global workforce (around 245,000 staff) are based in more than 250 European locations in almost all EU countries. The majority of its 49,000 engineers around the world work in Europe.

More than €12 billion has been invested in safe, clean, intelligent mobility across Europe by Continental over the past 10 years.

Dr. Ariane Reinhart warns against taking freedom and democracy for granted. He added:

“Freedom and democracy are the insurance cover for our community. We must defend both foundations and continually renew them. Voting in the European election is therefore an important commitment to democracy and economic growth. The long, drawn-out disputes surrounding the uncertain Brexit show us what “less EU” leads to: border fences, dislocations, fewer opportunities, and uncertain prospects.”

In particular, Dr. Reinhart called on eligible voters with higher aspirations to determine their own future. “There is a lot on the line here for them, because setbacks in the process of European unification reduce their opportunities for growth, just as they do for all of us. In times of international trade disputes and when tariffs have returned, a weakened Europe is a plaything for other, less liberal powers. A strong, European community and a strong European Single Market are the best way to protect our social, economic, and ecological climate.”

A strong Europe has a political and cultural significance for Continental, in addition to its economic relevance. European and internationally active companies bear responsibility for highlighting the benefits of a united, values-based Europe for their employees, according to Dr. Ariane Reinhart.

She added further: “Europe is a community of shared values, just like Continental. The corporate values For One Another, Freedom To Act, Trust, and Passion To Win that we embrace reflect the values of the European idea and support them. We understand it to mean that employees stick together, join forces, and work for one another as well as see and use the diversity in our company as a source of inspiration and creativity.”

The European idea has been promoted by Continental for two years now. It is giving young people the chance to experience the opportunities that a united Europe offers in the labor market, in particular. Continental has initiated the “Experiencing Europe” program in 2017, which offers a chance to young adults in Germany, who are seeking work, to complete two internships, each lasting two weeks, in another European country. On the other side, young people from other countries can complete an internship in Germany. In addition to Continental, the internship scheme includes companies like Schaeffler, Thomas Cook, and DHL. Thus far, some 100 young people have taken part in the program. The apprentices can use this international experience to improve their profile and secure a job at one of the companies involved. Four participants are currently completing an apprenticeship at Continental, and one is completing a work-study program at the company.

ASI President John Cross Named AGMA Chairman

John Cross, President, ASI Drives and Chairman, American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA)

An AGMA board member since 2013, Cross assumed the role of chair in April, 2019.

MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA, USA, 6-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — ASI Drives, a leading manufacturer of custom engineered gear drives since 1985, has announced that its President, John Cross, has been named chairman of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA).

An AGMA board member since 2013, Cross assumed the role of chair in April. He will hold that position for a two-year term.

The AGMA, which celebrated its centennial in 2016, is active in standards development of gears and power transmission products, offers a range of in-person and online courses, and hosts events, expositions and trade missions. Many of these activities drive the development of new technology to further the role that manufactured gears play in the ever-expanding industrial sector.

AGMA member companies currently number more than 470. They include gear manufacturers from the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as well as gearing interests from more than 30 countries around the world.

“ASI is honored to have John playing such a key role in a group as important as the AGMA,” said ASI CEO Doug Fastuca. “His work on the board has already done a great deal to benefit the industry as a whole, and as chairman he is in a position to really drive change and improvement among its membership and the industry as a whole.”

For his part, Cross says this marks the culmination of his more than 20-year involvement with AGMA.

“I have used AGMA standards since I began my career in 1985,” Cross said. “I began my association with AGMA in 1997 when I started working at ASI Drives, who is a 30-year AGMA member.

“Since I joined the board in 2013 I’ve been fortunate to have developed deep, lasting relationships with many high-level business leaders across various industries. Being the Chair of AGMA‘s Board of Directors affords me the opportunity to have meaningful discussions with industry leaders throughout the world about their strategic and business plans. Learning from their experience and knowledge allows me to better address the needs of the association and its members, as well as ASI and our customers.”

TomTom part of EU Data Task Force’s proof of concept to make roads in EU safer

TomTom part of EU Data Task Force’s proof of concept to make roads in EU safer

An Innovative Road Safety Initiative To Rely On Live Vehicle Data

AMSTERDAM, 5-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — EU Data Task Force (DTF) and TomTom (TOM2), active in location technology services, will work together on a proof of concept to improve road safety by sharing vehicle and infrastructure data between countries and manufacturers.

Dangerous road conditions, such as slippery roads, can be detected using the latest technologies and warnings can be issued to drivers and traffic participants. These warning messages, however, can also be very beneficial to other drivers and road operators, if shared.

The EU Data Task Force (DTF) will use a decentralised data collaboration architecture to share vehicle-generated data such as alerts, along with infrastructure information, in its proof of concept. The datasets will then be taken by TomTom, processed further, and delivered back to other vehicles and road authorities via its live Traffic services.

The EU Data Task Force (DTF) is a trusted partnership that enables fair competition organised into a public-private initiative that will implement existing EU laws on safety data access. DTF members include the European Commission, national governments, vehicle manufacturers and service providers. The DTF project is based on the reciprocity principle where safety data is offered in return for safety services.

Commenting on the DTF collaboration, Ralf-Peter Schäfer, VP Traffic and Travel, TomTom, said:

“Improving road safety in Europe is high on the agenda of the EU and national governments, and it’s also high on ours. TomTom’s vision is of safer roads, free of congestion and emissions. Our involvement in this proof of concept demonstrates our commitment to delivering live safety services for our customers, and our pride in being the first to collaborate with automakers and governments to make the roads safer.”

The following EU Member States, organisations and companies are part of The EU Data Task Force (DTF): BMW AG; Ford Smart Mobility Ltd; Mercedes Benz; Volvo Cars, HERE Europe B.V., TomTom Traffic B.V., The Netherlands, Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management; Spain, Ministry of Home Affairs La Subdirección General de Gestión de la Movilidad DGT; Finland, Transport and Communications Agency TRAFICOM; Germany, Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure and Luxembourg, Ministry of the Economy.

SEAT’s first electric car called Mii to debut in Oslo, Europe’s EVs capital

SEAT’s first electric car called Mii to debut in Oslo, Europe’s EVs capital

The SEAT on Tour roadshow will visit Oslo, Liverpool, Frankfurt, Paris and Milan

OSLO, 4-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — SEAT will debut its first ever electric car, Mii electric, in Oslo as part of its inaugural ‘SEAT on Tour’ roadshow. During SEAT’s European roadshow the company will bring the spirit of ‘Created in Barcelona’as well as its latest SEAT and CUPRA models, including the CUPRA Formentor and the all-electric SEAT el-Born, in Oslo, Liverpool, Paris and Milan.

SEAT is the brand with the youngest customer base, 10 years younger than the average and is one of the fastest growing volume car brands in Europe. The brand sold 202,600 cars in just the first four months of 2019, breaking all records. 80% of its cars are exported to 80 countries around the world.

Oslo, known as the electric vehicle capital of Europe, is going to be the first stop of the brand on its inaugural ‘SEAT on Tour’ roadshow. In Oslo, SEAT’s Mii electric will be premiered. The new electrical vehicle of SEAT is expected on the market by end of 2019 and will be one of the most affordable electric vehicles on offer. According to the company, the pre sales of the new Mii electric will begin in September 2019.

SEAT Minimó concept car, part of the brand’s micromobility strategy, will also be demonstrated in Oslo, along with the Mii electric. The SEAT Minimó concept car reaffirms SEAT’s commitment to urban micromobility and expands the easy mobility ecosystem that the brand is fostering.

SEAT is going to lead the urban micromobility strategy for the Volkswagen Group with the international premier of the Minimó concept vehicle that follows the launch of the SEAT eXS KickScooter powered by SEGWAY.

SEAT’s first all-electric vehicle, SEAT el-Born, based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, will also be on display in Oslo. SEAT el-Born is the second Group car to be built on the MEB platform.

Commenting on the exiting premieres, SEAT President Luca de Meo, said:

“Accessibility is one of most outstanding SEAT values and the ‘SEAT on Tour’ initiative reinforces it by bringing our novelties close to some of the key countries for the brand. As a world reference in electric mobility, it makes complete sense to take the Mii electric as a world premiere to Norway and showcase SEAT’s latest technology with two products that will shake the market in 2020, the SEAT el-Born and the CUPRA Formentor. Now is the right time and Oslo is the right place.”

CUPRA, just an year after it has become an independent brand, will join the SEAT on Tour roadshow to continue conquering car enthusiasts around the world.

CUPRA has remarkable sales achievements in the first four months of 2019 with the brand having sold 7,900 vehicles, which represents 82,3% growth over previous year.

Commenting on this achievement, CUPRA CEO and SEAT Executive Vice-President for Sales and Marketing Wayne Griffiths, said:

“We are expanding our footprint by strengthening our product range and completing the implementation of our distribution network, currently at 222 CUPRA Corners. In addition, the CUPRA Formentor and its high-performance plug-in hybrid engine revs up our path towards electrification. In the next few months we will prove that performance can also be electrified.”

Following the roadshow in Oslo, Norway, SEAT and CUPRA will be in Liverpool on June the 18th, where SEAT classic cars will also be on display. Paris will follow the Frankfurt Motorshow at end of September and the journey will finish in Milan during November 2019.

SEAT is considering to take its roadshow to Latin America, once its tour across Europe is over. Latin America is a key market for SEAT, which shows strong sales performance especially in Mexico.

Bus passengers in Finland will have a chance to reduce the carbon footprint of their bus trips with new Green Travel service

Bus passengers in Finland will have a chance to reduce the carbon footprint of their bus trips with new Green Travel service

ESPOO, 15-May-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Bus operator Savonlinja is partnering with Neste to introduce lower-emission traveling solution to its customers. Starting from mid-May 2019, the bus service will include a Green Travel surcharge on the normal bus ticket price, which will be up to the customer to decide on its exact amount.

Savonlinja will reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by fueling its buses with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ by using the money the company will collect from the Green Travel service. Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ is produced entirely from waste and residues.

Furthermore, Savonlinja, as part of the cooperation, will double the amount of money its customers pay for Green Travel service and will use these funds to cut down greenhouse gas emissions by refueling with Neste MY Renewable Diesel.

Under this kind of arrangement, which is the first of its kind in Finland, the customers will contribute to the reduction of their bus ride’s greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 90% compared to fossil diesel.

All Savonlinja’s long-distance passengers will be offered the new Green Travel service. It can be purchased for regular long-distance tickets via the mobile application “Linjalla” and at the Savonlinja online store. Customers will be given the option to decide on the price of the Green Travel themselves as the minimum amount for the service is set to one euro. The low-emission option will also be available to the customers for charter bus services.

Commenting on the Savonlinja / Neste partnership, Tuomas Kulola, Head of Sales, Marketing & Services at Neste, said:

“Climate change does not wait and solutions are needed right here and now. The key to fighting climate change is introducing innovations of all sizes to help bring about a more sustainable future. Developed in collaboration with Savonlinja, Green Travel is a good example of how important partnerships are to creating effective solutions. We are very proud to collaborate with Savonlinja on offering consumers the opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of their bus trips.”

Harri Leskinen, Savonlinja’s Chief Business Officer, comments:

“Customers have told us that they would like to have more climate and environmentally friendly transport options. Green Travel is the answer to this. Our long-term goal is to be able to use only renewable fuel in our entire fleet.”

Produced entirely out of waste and residues, Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces vehicle emissions. The MY Renewable Diesel has been available on the market in Finland since 2017 as its performance matches the best fossil-based diesels on the market. According to Neste, approximately one-fifth of consumers in Finland already use Neste MY Renewable Diesel when it is available at their local gas station. Nearly 50 filling stations throughout Finland are currently offering the Neste MY Renewable Diesel. The fuel can be used without any modifications to the vehicle’s engine and is compatible with all diesel engines.

The city of Valladolid will deploy an intelligent mobility solution based on Kapsch’s EcoTrafiX™ software

The city of Valladolid will deploy an intelligent mobility solution based on Kapsch’s EcoTrafiX™ software

VIENNA/MADRID, 27-May-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch Group‘s Kapsch TrafficCom will implement an intelligent mobility solution in the city of Valladolid in Spain. It will help the city get one step closer to becoming a smart city. The new system will enable different transportation agencies to integrate easily their data and provide Valladolid’s citizens with a single information point on schedules or incidents across various means of transport.

As part of the deployment, the project will offer an integrated traffic control system, which includes parking management and public transport. Reliable information about the transport in the city will be made available to the citizens coming from a single source on the municipal website. In addition, message panels have been installed across the town to help travelers find valuable information.

The new system will be based on Kapsch’s EcoTrafiX™ software, which will allow users to plan their journeys more rationally and efficiently. Kapsch’s system will analyse data from the different public transport means in Valladolid in order to propose effective routes and organize traffic in real time. Furthermore, Kapsch’s system will optimize the mobility conditions of collective transport, will as well reduce traffic congestion in the city center, and thus will guarantee that people have access to mobility in the best conditions possible.

From Valladolid City Council’s perspective, the Kapsch’s system will work as a “system of systems”, which will also include event and incident management, asset management, data analysis, report generation, as well as the availability of data on the municipal website.

The current deployment is part of Valladolid City Council’s strategy originally launched back in 2015. Kapsch’s intelligent mobility solutions are deployed in many cities across Spain including Madrid, Malaga, Bilbao, Vitoria, Castellón, Donostia, La Coruña, Palencia and Huelva.

Kapsch TrafficCom is active in the fields of tolling, traffic management, smart urban mobility, traffic safety and security, and connected vehicles.

Kapsch TrafficCom provides end-to-end solutions covering the entire value creation chain of its customers, from components and design to the implementation and operation of systems. Kapsch TrafficCom’s mobility solutions help make road traffic safer and more reliable, efficient, and comfortable in urban areas and on highways alike while helping to reduce pollution.

The company is an internationally renowned provider of intelligent transportation systems thanks to the many projects it has brought to successful completion in more than 50 countries around the world. Kapsch TrafficCom is part of the Kapsch Group and has subsidiaries and branches in over 30 countries. It has been listed in the Prime Market of the Vienna Stock Exchange since 2007 (ticker symbol: KTCG). Currently Kapsch TrafficCom employs more than 5,200 people and in fiscal year 2017/18 its revenue was approximately EUR 693.3 million.
