Streamlining adoption of high-speed and high-resolution surface texturing delivered with the Prometheus project

Streamlining adoption of high-speed and high-resolution surface texturing delivered with the Prometheus project

This three-year program brings together leading research and industrial organizations to allow the broad manufacturing of materials with low-friction, oleophobic and hydrophobic properties

PORTO SALVO, 4-Apr-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Prometheus’ project will bridge the existing gap between niche and mainstream applications for high power ultra-short pulse laser surface processing. This advanced technology enables the production of materials with advanced properties such as non-stick, low wear/friction, oleophobic or hydrophobic, but through this unique project will deliver a broad range of surface functionalities onto metals, polymers and ceramics by way of high throughput, high spatial resolution Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) surface processing. It is expected to deliver unprecedented surface texturing speeds of up to 5 m2/min and enable high resolution features down to 1 μm to be produced with minimal heat impact on work pieces. This ambitious project represents a pan-European EU consortium of world leading organizations, from industrial and research partners to four manufacturers – Maier, Johnson and Johnson, Fiat Chrysler Automobile group and Arcelik – that will be able to assess the project’s outputs against current industrial processes. Wrapping up the thee-year project, and through breakthrough developments in laser sources, optics, process setup, control and monitoring, the consortium will deliver an integrated laser processing demonstrator system to showcase its capabilities according to the established goals.

Beyond the expected improvement on accuracy, the Prometheus project qualitative objectives include better resources utilization from raw materials to energy and waste. It is also expected a quantum leap on the speed of materials’ processing, as mentioned, by reaching 2-5 m2/min, while also minimizing heat impact on sensitive materials. The project aims to achieve improved flexibility and allow for a simpler product customization – all of this at a fraction of existing solutions’ cost. The case studies being developed include a dishwasher, a tumble dryer, a cylinder piston liner, and high strength aluminium pressing for automotive.

The unique ability of this technology to deliver precise periodic arrays of surface features at an unprecedented processing rate will contribute to its entrance into mainstream manufacturing processes, from its current usage in niche ultra-high value applications. The DLIP (Direct Laser Interference Patterning) technology enables the full utilisation of the high-power laser systems delivering profound productivity gains versus current technologies. Also, by being digital by default, the system enables rapid reconfiguration to deliver customised surface functionalities and patterns on a component by component basis.

Keeping Europe at the core of innovation and environmental leadership

This unique project will bring to light a high potential high power ultra-short pulse laser processing system. Prometheus will address some of the key European 2020 societal challenges, both by ensuring that European companies and research organizations stay at the leading edge of the new
manufacturing technologies and by creating new jobs opportunities. At the same time, the project will minimize environmental impacts.

Prometheus will also contribute to support the goal of increasing investment in innovation up to 3% of the EU’s GDP. The new approaches to surface engineering made possible by this technology will have an impact on the increase in R&D spending, both in photonic component development
necessary to control the increased power densities and in widespread application development.

The exceptionally high processing rate enables cost-effective processing to price-sensitive industrial sectors such as the consortium partners, spanning automotive, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), white goods and consumer durables. The effect will also be felt on the overall value chain,
given the expected technology transfer and training across manufacturing sectors, as it becomes mainstream.

Bosch Engineering opens new acoustics test center in Abstatt to improve NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) in vehicles

Bosch Engineering opens new acoustics test center in Abstatt to improve NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) in vehicles

ABSTATT, 12-Apr-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Bosch Engineering has announced it is setting up a new acoustics test center in Abstatt, a municipality in the district of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, aimed at improving NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) in vehicles. Bosch Engineering is a subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH that is specialized in development services for vehicle and engine manufacturers.

The newly set up acoustics test center brings NVH expertise to Bosch Engineering’s range of development services, sets the stage for an efficient development process to improve NVH and aims at reducing development times while enhancing vehicle acoustics.

Acoustics in the vehicle are already seen and considered as a quality criterion in today’s cars.

Annoying automotive noise can be caused by audible or perceptible vibrations emanating from individual components during the motion of the vehicle conveyed by the vehicle’s structure and rendered as airborne sound.

Known as NVH, which stands for noise, vibration, harshness, among acoustics experts minimizing it through analyses is a fixture of automotive engineering.

Jörg Vetter, Senior Manager, New Calibration Services & Products at Bosch Engineering:

„The increasing shortening of development cycles requires an ideal integration of acoustic optimization into existing development processes.”

Acoustics are considered a major issue in the automotive engineering. From government regulations to car buyers and owners there are certain limits and expectations for external noise levels. New electric and hybrid vehicles also present considerable and often very specific challenges for acoustics experts working on improving NVH.

Acoustics need to be included early on in the development process, when new models are still on the drawing board.

Bosch Engineering relies on holistic engineering approach focused on optimizing the vehicle in supporting automakers’ efforts to improve NVH.

Jörg Vetter comments further:

“In acoustics analysis, we take advantage of the synergies resulting from the close collaboration within Bosch Engineering and with the Bosch Group’s acoustical engineers.”

Bosch Engineering provides a comprehensive service package to its customers covering the entire product development chain for a new vehicle. From an advice in the design phase to the support in the development phase, it all helps customers to continue improving their vehicles’ NVH behavior.

In general, acoustics engineers test-drive cars on public roads or private test tracks to research into their acoustics. However, when testing on the open-road external factors such as ambient noise, weather conditions or the driver’s profile may impact the measured results. This results in often long and tedious tests with results that are hardly reproducible.

Now, assessing vehicles’ NVH performance in Bosch Engineering’s state-of-the-art acoustics test center in Abstatt has just come closer to an ideal environment. The new test center relies on a soundproof hemi-anechoic chamber isolated from the outside world that makes testing and comparing new or modified components and calibrations under uniform conditions and with a view to their impact on the overall vehicle way more efficient.

All this helps reduce cost and time involved in engineering new cars’ acoustics and optimizing legacy vehicles’ acoustics.

Custom and reproducible, the development center’s measurement, analysis and evaluation procedures aim at rapidly assessing and optimizing acoustical phenomena.

“In our test center, we can quickly detect noise sources that impair driving comfort and develop countermeasures together with our customers,” added Jörg Vetter.

Specially equipped chassis dynamometer is the centerpiece of Bosch Engineering’s acoustics test center in Abstatt. It can be used for all type of vehicles and drives, from combustion engine, a hybrid drive and an electric drive to all-wheel, front-wheel and rear-wheel drivetrains. The four independently controllable rollers deliver 150 kW each for speeds up to 250 km/h. Various wheel torques can be simulated such as a cornering car and wheel loads. A well-insulated test cabin and silent rollers reduce background noise to a minimum so engineers can detect and measure even very low sound pressure levels. This feature represents a great competitive advantage, especially when it comes to testing electric vehicles. Having no combustion engine to mask automotive noise, the acoustics of powertrain peripherals are far more perceptible. Hydrogen vehicles are also covered by the test bench design, which includes specific monitoring functions for them.

The lab, sound studio and chassis dynamometer are installed in separate rooms.

The lab is equipped with precision instrumentation aimed at measuring vibration and sound pressure levels and conducting modal analyses to break down dynamic NVH behavior. The sound studio features high-tech equipment including headphones for binaural reproduction and a 13-speaker array for higher-order Ambisonics reproduction. This setup enables engineers at Bosch to compare diverse components’ acoustic behavior in the virtual realm without having to install them in the actual vehicle. It is also possible to switch between two NVH scenarios at the push of a button for A/B comparisons.

Upstream from the testing area is an assembly hall. It serves as a staging area to prepare vehicles for tests. The test center has capacity for preconditioning up to ten cars simultaneously, which offers an efficient means of executing even very extensive sets of measurements and achieving reproducible results.

Bosch at Hannover Messe: autonomous transport system, AI based visual fault detection and 3D printing with 5G

Bosch’s AI-based system for visual quality control ViPAS will be demonstrated at Hannover Messe

STUTTGART, 27-Mar-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Bosch will be presenting an autonomous transport system, artificial intelligence (AI) based visual fault detection and 3D printing relying on 5G at Hannover Messe. The factory of the future has already become a reality and the company is going to demonstrate that at this year’s Hannover Messe between Mon, Apr 1, 2019 and Fri, Apr 5, 2019. On display will be autonomous transport vehicles that deliver components to digital workspaces and then how robotics solutions are supporting workers in manufacturing while quality inspection is performed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Communication between machines and systems runs smoothly and in near real time due to the 5G.

Industry 4.0 is a key enabler in the factory of the future. In fact, Over 1.5 billion euros is what Bosch has generated off Industry 4.0 applications over the past four years alone. Furthermore, the company plans to reach annual sales of over a billion euros with Industry 4.0 by 2022.

According to Bosch, artificial intelligence (AI) is the key technology of the future. Relying on AI, machines can learn how to be smart and how to anticipate. People will be relieved from time-consuming and strenuous tasks as machines learn further, and this represents a huge potential.

Bosch board of management member Rolf Najork:

“Bosch regards AI as a key technology. Our goal is for all Bosch products to be equipped with AI, or for AI to have played a part in their development and manufacture, by the middle of the next decade,”

AI that is safe, robust, and explainable is what Bosch is focused on.

Bosch’s AI-based system for visual quality control ViPAS will be demonstrated at Hannover Messe. ViPAS relies on a gripper arm, cutting-edge camera technology and an intelligent software. To illustrate what ViPAS is capable of, Bosch has tested the system in a pilot project at its plant in Nuremberg. The AI-based ViPAS system has gone through 12,000 test procedures achieving a success rate of 99.9 percent. The task was to sort the parts as “OK” or “not OK” and ViPAS has the job done with near-perfect accuracy. ViPAS will get further in-house refining to prepare the technology for use at various plants.

Andreas Müller, Bosch researcher and chairman of the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA):

“5G will be the central nervous system in the factory of the future.”

Many Industry 4.0 applications are fully dependable on the new 5G mobile communications standard. The 5G allows data transmission of up to 100 times faster than the previous standard and as a result, transmission delays have fallen to a minimum while seeing its reliability significantly increased.

To make sure that 5G meets the future needs of industry, Bosch has taken on the chair of the 5G-ACIA, which was established in 2018. Since then, over 40 key companies and research bodies have joined. Furthermore, 5G will be tested in Bosch plants before the end of 2019.

The advantages of the new 5G standard will presented at this year’s Hannover Messe where Bosch will join its partners Nokia, Qualcomm, and BigRep. For the first time, Bosch, Nokia, Qualcomm and BigRep will bring connectivity to a 3D printer with the help of 5G. This set up will make it possible for some of the control elements that would normally be integrated into the machine to be outsourced to a local manufacturing cloud. Machines with this feature are leaner, cheaper, and easier to maintain.

Sweden is of a strategic significance for Bosch. Sweden is this year’s Hannover Messe partner country. The company has been present in Sweden since 1904 and employs more than 1,600 associates at nine locations in the country. Bosch sales in Sweden are around 1.1 billion euros in 2018.

In Sweden, Bosch connects its Hägglunds brand high-performance hydraulic systems with sensors and cloud-based applications, and employs machine learning methods at its Rexroth’s plant in Mellansel (eastern Sweden). The result is greater productivity and improved availability of the drive systems. Bosch Industry 4.0 solutions have also been put to work for LKAB at the iron ore mine in Kiruna, the northernmost city in Sweden.

New advanced vehicle safety features will become mandatory in 2022 across EU

New advanced vehicle safety features will become mandatory in 2022 across EU

BRUSSELS, 26-Mar-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Provisional political agreement on the revised General Safety Regulation has just been reached by the EU institutions. Passengers, pedestrians and cyclists will be better protected as new safety technologies will become mandatory across EU in 2022.

Some 90% of all fatalities and injuries on our roads are caused by human errors and new technologies on the market can help reduce that number.

Last year, the Commission proposed things like the dangerous blind spots on trucks and buses and technology that warns the driver in case of drowsiness or distraction to become mandatory as part of vehicle safety measures aimed at helping save lives.

Number of accidents are expected to be reduced due to advanced safety features, which will pave the way towards increasingly connected and automated mobility, and boost the global innovation and competitiveness edge of the European car industry.

The European Parliament and the Council are now expected to approve formally the political agreement reached by the European Parliament, Council and Commission in the so-called trilogue negotiations.

2022 is set for the new safety features to become mandatory in EU. Exception is made for only direct vision for trucks and buses and enlarged head impact zone on cars and vans, which will follow later due to the necessary structural design changes.

The proposed car safety features that will become mandatory in the European Union from 2022:

Advanced emergency braking (cars, vans)
Alcohol interlock installation facilitation (cars,
vans, trucks, buses)
Drowsiness and attention detection (cars, vans,
trucks, buses)
Distraction recognition / prevention (cars, vans,
trucks, buses)
Event (accident) data recorder (cars, vans, trucks,
buses)
Emergency stop signal (cars, vans, trucks, buses)
Full-width frontal occupant protection crash test –
improved seatbelts (cars and vans)
Head impact zone enlargement for pedestrians
and cyclists -safety glass in case of crash (cars and
vans)
Intelligent speed assistance (cars, vans, trucks,
buses)
Lane keeping assist (cars, vans)
Pole side impact occupant protection (cars, vans)
Reversing camera or detection system (cars, vans,
trucks, buses)
Tyre pressure monitoring system (vans, trucks,
buses)
Vulnerable road user detection and warning on
front and side of vehicle (trucks and buses)
Vulnerable road user improved direct vision from
driver’s position (trucks and buses)

Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska, responsible for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs:

“Every year, 25,000 people lose their lives on our roads. The vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error. We can and must act to change this. With the new advanced safety features that will become mandatory, we can have the same kind of impact as when the safety belts were first introduced. Many of the new features already exist, in particular in high–end vehicles. Now we raise the safety level across the board, and pave the way for connected and automated mobility of the future.”

The measures proposed will help save over 25,000 lives and avoid at least 140,000 serious injuries by 2038, according to the European Commission and this is expected to contribute to the EU’s long-term goal of moving close to zero fatalities and serious injuries by 2050 (“Vision Zero”).

The new advanced safety features in the vehicles will help drivers get gradually used to the new driving assistance. Automation, for instance, offers significant potential to compensate the human errors and will as well offer new mobility solutions for the elderly and physically impaired. Those measures, among others, are expected to enhance public acceptance of and trust in automated cars, supporting the transition towards autonomous driving.

What has been done so far:

Over the past few years, a range of mandatory measures have been introduced by the EU, which have contributed to an estimated reduction of 50,000 fatal traffic casualties per year. Electronic stability control systems on all vehicles, as well as advanced emergency braking systems and lane departure warning systems on trucks and buses are part of those measures.

The public consultation with the stakeholders on potential improvements to current vehicle safety measures has been launched in 2017. In May 2018, the Commission then proposed a review of the General Safety Regulation and the Pedestrian Safety Regulation, under the Third “Europe on the Move” set of actions. The revised General Safety Regulation goes hand in hand with an efficient safety management of road infrastructure, where the Commission’s proposal was agreed in February 2019.

The European Commission has also presented a Communication on Connected and Automated Mobility to make Europe a world leader for autonomous and safe mobility systems. As a first deliverable for connected mobility the Commission had adopted new rules that step up the deployment of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) on roads in Europe. The C-ITS allow vehicles to ‘talk’ to each other, to the road infrastructure, and to other road users – for instance about dangerous situations, road works and the timing of traffic lights, making road transport safer, cleaner and more efficient.

German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence GmbH (DFKI) and Hitachi unveil new AI based technology to recognize and evaluate physical load on the worker’s body

Test screen showing real-time measurement and comparison/assessment of differences with the model worker. Changes in physical load evaluation with time (upper left); Video of an improper movement (upper right). Changes in the status of body parts with time (lower left); Evaluation of each body part (lower right).

KAISERSLAUTERN, 20-Mar-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Hitachi, Ltd. and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence GmbH (DFKI) announced they have developed an AI technology that performs real-time recognition and quantification of physical load exerted on a worker’s body during work that is using the motion data of each body part obtained through sensors in wearable devices. The AI based technology quantifies the physical load on a worker that wears a sensor suit and provides effective feedbacks on the movement of each body part.

DFKI and Hitachi will use the newly developed AI technology to contribute to workers’ safety and health through standardization of work skills in production/maintenance sites.

Since April 2016, Hitachi has been running a transfer lab at DFKI in Kaiserslautern aiming at developing a cutting-edge AI technology of human-activity-recognition for industry.

DFKI and Hitachi will present part of this AI technology at Hannover Messe 2019, hall 2, booth C59, to be held from 1-5 April 2019 in Hannover, Germany.

Skilled labor is in shortage and recruiting new workers is becoming increasingly difficult in today’s industry. Furthermore maintaining the skill level of workers is becoming difficult in manufacturing industry and in maintenance or carrier businesses.

Ensuring the safety and health of workers in production sites and assisting them in preventing danger and maintaining their health has increasingly become very important. Knowing the level of physical load during work is necessary to keep workers safe and healthy. While fixed cameras have been historically used to recognize workers’ activities they are limited in the range they can measure and it has been difficult to quantitatively and stably assess physical load in complex production sites or outside places where it is hard to eliminate blind spots.

This is what the newly developed AI based technology by DFKI and Hitachi is meant to address. The AI technology uses the motion data of a worker, measured directly with wearable devices, to recognize and evaluate physical load on the worker’s body. The current technology steps on the AI based technology for human activity recognition of workers using wearable devices that was developed in and originally announced in March, 2017. More precisely, it recognizes worker’s activities (e.g. tightening a screw) using quantitative data collected through arm-band sensors and eye tracking glasses in order to prevent human errors.

Now, the two organisations have combined the expertise of Hitachi in human activity recognition technology with the Deep Learning technology knowledge of DFKI to jointly develop this advanced AI technology.

The new AI technology can be split into two main features.

Technology to directly measure body movements in various human actions and quantify physical load
The movements of over 30 body parts necessary to recognize basic human actions are directly measure by sensors in wearable devices. AI driven models then analyze the collected data to learn how to estimate the position of each body part in advance. AI powered technology recognizes the data of certain action from the combination of each body part’s position, which allows the quantification of physical load from the action using time-series data processing technology based on Deep Learning.
Technology to estimate physical load in real time and present differences from proper working posture to workers
The motion data of the model worker measured in advance and that of a worker for each body part is then automatically compared and an AI driven model identifies specific movements and body parts that account for significant differences between them. As a result, it indicates to the worker its assessment of body parts that are causing higher physical load in an easy manner.

The new AI based technology has been put in action to pick up heavy object. The results of the experiment confirmed that it can perform real-time estimation of quantitative values for the physical load of the action. Furthermore, for actions which contain bad movement, it was confirmed feedback on each body part could be provided, like movements of waist and knees are different from the model worker.

Hitachi and DFKI will examine the effectiveness of giving instruction for safer operations in production sites with this technology.

The newly developed AI driven technology will be utilized for operation assistance and prevention of dangerous actions in order to contribute to ensuring workers’ safety, managing workers’ health, and improving worker education in various production areas, sites and scenarios. The newly developed AI driven technology is also expected to be applied in other industries such as sports or entertainment in the future. Furthermore, drawing on previously developed human activity recognition AI, Hitachi and DFKI will aim at realizing more efficient and safer working environment by contributing to the improvement of productivity.

Safety-critical positioning for autonomous driving: with ESCAPE the first fully integrated device is on its way

The ESCAPE GNSS Engine board in its final packaging (courtesy of FICOSA)

BARCELONA, Spain, 19-Mar-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Autonomous driving is the hot topic of todays’ mobility and transportation world. Safety is the most fundamental requirement and, at the same time, the greatest concern about autonomous driving applications. The major perceived concern about autonomous driving is safety, at all levels of the technology and of the human interaction. In this context, the localization technology is a key element, as it enables the navigation of autonomous vehicles when operating without human supervision. To achieve this goal, the localization technology has to be designed from the beginning for safety.

The ESCAPE project (European Safety Critical Applications Positioning Engine), funded by the European GNSS Agency’s Fundamental Elements Programme, has indeed pursued a safety-oriented design paradigm for its innovative automotive-grade localization engine for autonomous vehicles, the ESCAPE GNSS Engine, or EGE.

The design of each component on the EGE, its development, integration and manufacturing has followed stringent safety-oriented criteria, which encompass automotive-grade Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) procedures and GNSS-oriented Required Navigation Performance (RNP).

The solution leverages on the Global Navigation Satellite Systems, including the Galileo constellation, thanks to the new STM TESEO APP chipset, which supports ASIL-B platforms. This is complemented with intelligent automotive cameras and low-cost inertial sensors, vehicle odometry, lane-level navigation maps, governed by GMV’s integration algorithms. The GMV’s real-time Precise Point Positioning service, as well as the use of highly precise maps, are the keys for enhanced accuracy, enabled via a high-speed connectivity of the vehicle. The unique feature of such a multi-layer design is the estimation in real-time of the integrity level associated with the location estimates, which is also the fundamental element for safety-oriented navigation.

The ESCAPE GNSS Engine is assembled and manufactured by FICOSA and will be validated through an extensive test campaign on-board of a Renault’s electric car.

The first accuracy results obtained from the GNSS-only positioning algorithms in a medium-multipath propagation scenario have offered a promising 0.3 m RMS horizontal accuracy in static and 0.5 m in dynamic conditions.

Other test sessions are expected for March, July and September 2019 and are intended to validate, respectively:

The integrated positioning algorithms (March 2019)
The provision of integrity information through the computation of Protection Levels (July 2019)
The robustness of the integrated approach in urban and suburban scenarios (September 2019)

The project is also planning a final demo at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne (UTC), in France, in which a test car will show its enhanced/autonomous driving capabilities enabled by the EGE board. Autonomous maneuvers will be demonstrated along a controlled circuit in the UTC campus, while enhanced ADAS functionalities will be demonstrated along public urban streets in Compiègne. The final demo will be organized in late November/December 2019.

The ESCAPE project’s most recent achievements will be also presented at the 2019 edition of the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit at the Session 8, dedicated to “THE ROLE OF GNSS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF AUTOMATIC DRIVING”.

BASF: engineering plastic Ultramid now in use as standard to manufacture the anode- and cathode-end plate in fuel cells

Ultramid® setzt neue Maßstäbe für die Brennstoffzelle / Ultramid® is setting new standards for fuel cells

LUDWIGSHAFEN, 11-Mar-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF, as the biggest chemical supplier to the automotive industry, is very active on and engaged with things like automotive drive system, energy consumption, emissions, new and improved powertrain concepts for cars, electric drive concepts, among others, along with the major car manufacturers. In general, chemistry is making an important contribution to a number of different electric drive concepts.

And now a breakthrough is made in the field of fuel cells. BASF’s Performance Materials is working closely with Joma-Polytec and Daimler AG’s subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell over the engineering plastic Ultramid, which has successfully been used to manufacture a number of fuel cell system components. The Ultramid is already in use as standard in the new Mercedes GLC F-CELL, which combines a fuel cell with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

Andreas Stockheim, Segment Manager Powertrain and Chassis at BASF:

“Our extensive plastics portfolio offers all sorts of advantages which help us to satisfy specific customer requirements, depending on the drive concept and the specific component. By continually developing new products in close collaboration with our customers, we are also able to adapt our portfolio to trends and changes in the market.”

Plastics are seen to be increasing efficiency across all of the different engines, from hybrid, plug-in and electric vehicles to internal combustion ones.

The automotive industry places huge demands on materials with its stringent requirements on high quality and safety. BASF is able to keep pace with the latest developments of car manufacturers, while also setting innovative trends with its polyamides (Ultramid), polybutylene terephthalates (Ultradur®), polyphthalamides (PPA), and the plastics polyoxymethylene (Ultraform®) and polyethersulfone (Ultrason®)

For example, the Mercedes GLC F-Cell is hugely reliant on Ultramid’s properties such as good thermal and chemical resistance, dynamic stiffness, impact strength, and good long-term performance.

Stefan Milimonka, Key Account Manager in BASF’s Performance Materials division:

“Earlier tests with other materials revealed mechanical problems, so Daimler had very specific requirements for the material. Our expertise with plastic automotive components and the extensive choice of existing products meant that we were able to work out possible solutions with our partners and identify the right material. It shows that with specialist knowledge and good cooperation between everyone involved, a complex project like this can be brought to a successful conclusion.”

New development project has been established together with Joma-Polytec GmbH and Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH in order to find an optimal solution satisfying the extensive range of requirements including thermal stability, media resistance, and durability.

Based on an intensive material analyses of the chemical and mechanical resistance, a decision has been made on the tailor-made Ultramid grades A3WG10 CR and A3EG7 EQ.

Following rigorous testing of all components, the two glass fiber-reinforced Ultramid grades are now in use as standard to manufacture the anode- and cathode-end plate in fuel cells.

The exceptional purity requirements associated with sensitive applications in the electronics industry has made the Ultramid A3EG7 EQ as an ideal material. Ultramid A3EG7 EQ offers excellent resistance, while meeting all requirements regarding the purity of the material in the case of the media distribution plate and the water separator unit, which is exposed to a wide variety of media through the cooling water, air and hydrogen channel.

Stefan Heinz, deputy head of plastics technology development at Joma-Polytec GmbH:

“Thanks to BASF’s extensive product portfolio and the specialist knowledge of all the parties involved, we have taken an important step forward in the serial development of fuel cells. We worked together to analyze the stringent requirements and were able to put in place a highly efficient solution.”

BASF’s Performance Materials is active in four major industry sectors – transportation, construction, industrial applications and consumer goods encompassing the entire materials know-how of BASF regarding innovative, customized plastics under one roof.

For nearly 60 years, Joma-Polytec has been developing comprehensive solutions in the field of plastic technology for its customers from the prototype, through the production to the subsequent support.

Mercedes-Benz Fuel Cell GmbH is part of the global fuel cell activities of Daimler AG. The company is active in the research and development of fuel cell systems for motor vehicles, including hydrogen tank systems, in addition to laying the groundwork for hydrogen infrastructure and carrying out demonstration projects.

The company is stepping on profound and long-established expertise in fuel cell technology. Since 1997 activities for the development of fuel cell systems are based at the Nabern location near Kirchheim-Teck. The original initiator was Ballard Research Inc., which founded in 1979 by Geoffrey Ballard in Burnaby, Canada. In 1983 fuel cell technology was developed at Ballard for the first time. 1993 saw the presentation of the first bus to be powered by hydrogen-technology fuel cells. The first ever product of this type was made available on the market in 2001.
