ViaVan, the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz Vans and Via, is launching its service in Amsterdam. The Dutch capital is thus the first city in Europe where this cost-effective and sustainable alternative form of mobility is available with immediate effect. Thanks to innovative technology which enables journeys to be pooled, passengers with similar or the same destinations travel together without any lengthy detours and delays. In September of last year Mercedes-Benz Vans and Via, a start-up company based in New York, founded the joint venture ViaVan with the following aim: to bring ridesharing to Europe and to establish it here as a complement to existing mobility offers. Other cities are to follow suit, including Berlin and London, where the service will also be launched depending on final approvals.

With four body variants, three output levels and two drive types, the C-Class is the most versatile and most successful model series from Mercedes-AMG. Extensive measures now make the entry-level models, the C 43 4MATIC Saloon (combined fuel consumption: 9.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 209 g/km[1]) and Estate (combined fuel consumption: 9.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 214 g/km1) even more attractive. The AMG radiator grille in a twin-louvre design, the powerfully sculpted front apron and the new rear apron with round twin tailpipe trim elements visibly enhance the new C 43 models and give them an even more distinct positioning. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now delivers 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the engine combines agile driving dynamics with comfort on long journeys.
“As the most successful model series for Mercedes-AMG, the C-Class family in all its facets has made a major contribution to our corporate success. One major component in this success story was the implementation of the 43-series models, which have thrilled our customers worldwide since the market launch in 2015. The high demand and positive feedback have encouraged us to sharpen up not only the appearance of the facelift, but also its performance, efficiency and dynamism in true AMG style,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
For this the AMG development engineers have increased the output of the 3.0‑litre V6 engine by 17 kW (23 hp) to 287 kW (390 hp). The peak torque of 520 Nm is available from 2500 to 5000 rpm. This package guarantees impressive performance figures: the new C 43 4MATIC Saloon accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and the Estate in 4.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
Sporty and distinctive: the exterior design
The exterior of the C 43 4MATIC is considerably more expressive, even more strongly identifying the new model as a member of the family. New distinguishing features include the AMG radiator grille with twin louvre in matt iridium silver and the powerfully sculpted front apron with additional flics. The side air curtains in the front apron help with optimum guidance of the front airstream. The attachment on the cross fins plus the trim element on the front splitter are finished in silver chrome.
The rear view also conveys a sporty impression with two round twin tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome. The rear apron with side air curtain look and the significantly more expressive diffuser improve air flow characteristics at the rear. The spoiler lip on the boot lid is painted in the vehicle colour.
The optional AMG styling package creates highlights, which are even sportier: a more expressive front splitter, the standard-fit spoiler lip, broader side skirt inserts and flics in the rear bumper are finished in high-gloss black.
Enhanced aerodynamic efficiency: the new AMG aero wheels
When viewed from the side, eye-catching features include the sporty side skirts plus new, aerodynamically optimised AMG light-alloy wheels. Their specifically designed outer aero rings and spoke geometry, which has been optimised in the wind tunnel help to improve air flow around the wheels and thus increase aerodynamic efficiency. As part of this, the developers aimed for the optimum combination of aerodynamics, weight and brake cooling, together with maximum performance and reduced fuel consumption.
There is a choice of two aerodynamically optimised rim designs for the C 43 4MATIC: the standard specification includes the AMG wheel with five twin spokes painted in tremolite grey with a high-sheen finish, in size 7.5 J x 18 ET with 225/45 R 18 tyres at the front, and 8.5 J x 18 ET with 245/40 R 18 tyres at the rear.
As an option there is another design with five twin spokes, painted in tantalite grey, high-gloss black or matt black with a high-sheen finish, in size 7.5 J x 19 ET with 225/40 R 19 tyres at the front, and 8.5 J x 19 ET with 255/35 R 19 tyres at the rear.
Sporty look with model-specific details: the interior design
The interior reinforces the dynamic calibre of the new C 43 4MATIC with numerous individual details. Sporty materials such as leather, DINAMICA microfibre and aluminium in a high-quality finish continue the theme of the expressive exterior in the interior.
The optional AMG Performance seats provide optimum lateral support when adopting a dynamic driving style thanks to the special design of the seat side bolsters of the seat cushion and backrest. As an option the seat side bolsters can be adjusted perfectly by means of built-in air cushions. The Performance seats with integrated head restraints emphasise the sporty character of the cockpit. For the first time in the C 43 4MATIC, the Performance seats can not only be heated, but now also climatised in three levels in conjunction with leather upholstery.
The upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather / DINAMICA microfibre in black with red topstitching equally underscores the dynamic driving character of the C 43 4MATIC. Matching the seat design, the door centre panels and dashboard are finished in ARTICO man-made leather with red topstitching. Aluminium sports pedals with black studs, trim elements in black piano lacquer with light longitudinal-grain aluminium, the black roof liner and the red seat belts create further sporty highlights.
Comprehensive individualisation options
As an option there is a comprehensive choice of individualisation options. New features include trim elements in anthracite open-pore oak wood, open-pore walnut plus the combination of longitudinal-grain aluminium for the doors and black open-pore ash wood for the centre console. On top of this there is the familiar AMG trim in carbon fibre / light longitudinal-grain aluminium and matt silver fibreglass. In terms of upholstery, as an option there is leather in black, black with red topstitching, cranberry red / black and also as a new highlight saddle brown / black.
A fine combination available from the designo range comes with diamond quilting in saddle brown / black and platinum white pearl / black, which can likewise be combined with the AMG Performance seats.
Interior with innovative display concept and operating system
Whether with touchpad and Controller, Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel or via voice entry: the operating system of the C 43 4MATIC is just as versatile as it is flexible. All options are aimed at enabling the control tasks to be carried out as conveniently, quickly and appropriately to the situation as possible in this sporty environment.
Just as flexible is the display of the optional, fully digital instrument cluster with 31.2 cm (12.3-inch) screen diagonal, which brings the vehicle functions directly to life with the three AMG-specific display styles of “Classic”, “Sport” or “Supersport”.
A host of additional AMG information
Via the specific AMG menu, the driver is able to call up a host of additional information to make the driving experience even sportier:
Warm-up: engine and transmission oil temperature plus charge pressure as Boost display Setup: current status of systems such as the drive system, suspension, exhaust system, ESP®, transmission G-Force: display of current g-forces in a coordinate system and ability to save maximum values Race Timer: manual stopwatch for lap times and colour display of fastest and slowest laps, plus average speed and distance Engine Data: engine torque / rated output in a bar chart plus charge pressure as Boost display In addition, there is a digital display of the current speed and the currently engaged gear. The manual transmission mode is marked with a yellow “M”.
The visualisations in the central media display likewise enable further vehicle functions to be experienced even better, e.g. with animated presentation of the driving assistance, vehicle and communication systems. A media display measuring 17.8 cm (7 inches) with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels comes as standard on board. Another alternative is the 26.0 cm (10.25-inch) media display with a resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels. This is included as standard in conjunction with COMAND Online, or optional for the Audio 20 GPS system.
New generation of AMG steering wheels
Extremely sporty design, a grippy shape with a heavily contoured rim and intuitive operation are the key attributes of the new AMG steering wheel in nappa leather, which comes as standard equipment. It has a flattened bottom section and is perforated in the grip area. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles support a sporty driving style with manual gear shifting. As an option it is also available in nappa leather / DINAMICA microfibre and in nappa leather with trim in black piano lacquer.
The built-in Touch Control buttons are a new feature. These can be used to control the functions of the instrument cluster (left) and the multimedia system (right) by means of horizontal and vertical swiping movements of the finger. As in the S-Class, the settings for Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and cruise control are made in the left control panels. The control panels on the right are used to activate the voice control and telephone, and to regulate the sound volume, music selection and other functions of the multimedia system.
Well-proven and powerful: the AMG 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine
The V6 biturbo engine boasts a high power output combined with low fuel consumption and emissions. The high power output is in part courtesy of separate, larger turbochargers (max. charge pressure 1.1 bar). Installed close to the engine, the two turbochargers are especially spontaneous in their response. The AMG power unit can be identified by the engine cover with red aluminium insert and AMG lettering.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission with shorter shift times
The C 43 4MATIC makes use of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission, which the Mercedes-AMG developers have tuned specifically for a dynamic driving experience. This has a model-specific software application to achieve very short shift times.
The multiple downshift function allows more spontaneous bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in “Sport” and “Sport+” drive programs makes for an even more emotional driving experience. Defined ignition adjustments also provide faster gear shifts in the other modes. In all modes moving off occurs in first gear in order to always guarantee a dynamic driving experience.
“Manual” mode can be selected using a separate button in the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected drive program, and the driver can now change gear using the paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.
Characteristics at the touch of a finger: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT
With the proven DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual”, the characteristics of the C 43 4MATIC+ can be customised at the tap of a finger. The available range extends from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. This modifies key parameters, such as the response of the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. Independently of the DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, the driver has the option of pressing the “M” button to switch directly to manual mode, in which gearshifts are executed exclusively using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. The suspension set-ups can also be selected specifically on demand.
The fifth mode “Slippery” is new, and is identified by means of the snowflake symbol. The moderate and even power delivery is specially programmed for slippery or snow-covered road conditions.
Rear-biased and agile: AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive
The standard-specification AMG Performance 4MATIC four-wheel drive features rear-biased torque distribution with a front/rear axle split of 31 to 69 percent. This configuration provides for enhanced driving dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road as well as improved traction when accelerating. The single-stage transfer case of the four-wheel drive system is flange-mounted to the transmission as a separate system.
This configuration makes it easier to modify the torque split for each particular model, allowing even more individual characteristics for the respective model series. Its compact design means that it does not entail any space restrictions for passengers or luggage.
With adaptive adjustable damping: AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension
With its adjustable, electronically controlled damping system, the AMG RIDE CONTROL steel suspension of the C 43 4MATIC provides both sporty driving dynamics and brand-typical comfort on long journeys. The basis for this is formed by the 4-link front axle and independent multilink rear suspension. The AMG-specific kinematics and elastokinematics with newly developed components result in very high camber stability when cornering at speed. The axial brake connection on the front axle supports the agile and precise handling.
The adaptive adjustable damping comes as standard. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. This improves driving safety and ride comfort. The damping is adjusted individually for each wheel, and depends on the driving style, the road surface and the selected suspension setting. The ideal operating point can be selected at all times on the basis of a broad scope of information relating to acceleration or vehicle speed, for example. Via a switch on the centre console, the driver can select between three different sets of damper characteristics, namely “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”, and thus individually influence the driving experience — from highly comfortable to sportily taut.
Direct and with clear feedback: the AMG speed-sensitive steering
The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It impresses with its precise, authentic feedback. The steering servo assistance is reduced at high speeds, and continuously increases at lower speeds. This means that comparatively little steering force is required at low speeds, and that the best possible control over the vehicle is maintained at high speeds. The steering servo assistance depends on the selected suspension setting. In “Sport” mode, more feedback is conveyed about the driving conditions.
Data logger for use on the racetrack: AMG TRACK PACE
As the virtual race engineer for recording data when driving on closed-off racetracks, AMG TRACK PACE provides a significantly extended and even more precise scope of functions. TRACK PACE can be ordered as an option for the COMAND Online infotainment system.
When this function is activated, a wealth of vehicle-specific data (e.g. speed, acceleration) are recorded ten times per second while driving. On top of this there are displays of lap and sector times and also the respective difference for a reference time. Because specific display elements light up in green or red, the driver is able to see at a glance, without reading numbers, whether he/she is currently faster or slower than the best time.
After fast laps on the racetrack, driving skills can be analysed and improved on the basis of the data. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100-0 km/h) can be measured and saved. Thanks to a new developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit is departed from or shortened. Alongside GPS data, the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds) are used. The data are displayed on the multimedia display, in the instrument cluster and on the head-up display. Known racetracks, for example the Nürburgring, are already stored.
Furthermore, it is also possible to record your own circuits. The map display can be switched from 2D to 3D and updated online. A suitable iPhone app can also be connected via WLAN. Customers can use it to share their experiences and data from the racetrack with other AMG drivers via Facebook, YouTube or the AMG Private Lounge.
Wellness on long-distance journeys: ENERGIZING comfort control
The optional ENERGIZING comfort control is also available for the new C 43 4MATIC. It networks together the various comfort systems in the vehicle and uses specific functions of the air conditioning and seats (heating, ventilation) plus lighting and music moods. Depending on the mood or requirement of the driver, it generates a special wellness set-up to enhance well-being and performance.

Edition 1: Exclusive special model on market launch
The A-Class will be available as an “Edition 1” model at an additional price of 7021 euros for around one year after the market launch. Both on the exterior and in the interior, the exclusive special model has numerous colour highlights in Edition green. In addition, equipment features such as LED High Performance headlamps, sport seats and ambience lighting are standard equipment. The Edition 1 is available with all engine variants.
Safety: MULTIBEAM LED, driving assistance systems, PRE-SAFE®
Another example of the technology transfer from the luxury to the compact class are the optionally available MULTIBEAM LED headlamps (1487.50 euros). These allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation. 18 individually actuated LEDs are housed in each headlamp. The daylight-like light colour of the LEDs is easy on the eyes and has a positive effect on concentration. As a further option, LED High Performance headlamps (987.70 euros) offer a wider light distribution compared to the standard halogen headlamps, a daylight-like light colour and lower energy consumption.
The new A-Class is equipped with the latest driving assistance systems, which give the driver cooperative support. This means that it has the highest level of active safety in its segment, with functions adopted from the S‑Class. For the first time, the A-Class is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain driving situations. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now support the driver even more conveniently in keeping a safe distance and steering, and the vehicle speed is now also automatically adjusted on bends, at road junctions and on roundabouts.
The Driving Assistance package (1796.90 euros, expected to be available from fourth quarter of 2018) includes the following systems: Active Distance Control DISTRONIC with route-based speed adjustment; Active Steering Assist with Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist; Active Speed Limit Assist; Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function; Evasive Steering Assist; Active Blind Spot Assist; PRE-SAFE® PLUS. PRE-SAFE® PLUS can recognise an imminent rear-end collision. If the danger of a collision persists, the system can lock the brakes of the stationary vehicle before a rear-end collision to prevent it from being shunted forward by the impact. This can minimise the risk of injury by reducing the forward jolt caused by the impact.
Further PRE-SAFE® functions are included in the Driving Assistance package, but are also separately available in the PRE-SAFE® system (392.20 euros). The PRE‑SAFE® system makes use of the time before an impending accident. Numerous measures can reduce the loads acting on the occupants. These also include the innovative PRE-SAFE® Sound system. This prepares the human hearing for the expected noise of an impact when there is a risk of a collision. When the danger of a collision is detected, the system causes the onboard sound system to emit a short rushing sound, which can activate a tiny muscle in the human ear. This contracts as a reflex when loud noises occur, thus protecting the hearing.
The optional head-up display (1178.10 euros) is a new feature in the A-Class. Important information is projected into the windscreen, reducing distraction from the traffic situation. There is also less eye fatigue for the driver, as the eyes do not constantly have to refocus between close-up and long-distance vision.
MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: In conversation with the car
The new A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model to feature the completely new multimedia system MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience, which also ushers in a new era in Mercedes me connectivity. A unique feature of this system is its ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX is optionally individualisable, and adapts to suit the user. As a further option it features intelligent voice control, which is activated by the key phrase “Hey Mercedes”.
The MBUX functions are modular in structure, so that the precise needs of different customers and markets can be met. As standard this has two 7-inch displays for the instrument cluster and media display with touchscreen, a multifunction sport steering wheel with touch control buttons on the left and right, a USB interface (Type C), a Bluetooth® connection for telephony and audio sources.
Basic Navigation package (1356.60 euros): extended MBUX functions (including intelligent voice control with “Hey Mercedes”), navigation, pre-installation for Live Traffic Information and touchpad. Premium Navigation package (3016.65 euros): 10.25-inch instrument cluster, 10.25-inch media display, extended MBUX functions, navigation, pre-installation for Live Traffic Information, pre-installation for digital radio, touchpad and Traffic Sign Assist. MBUX Augmented Reality for Navigation (297.50 euros) is a completely new function where the map display is enhanced with augmented reality. A video image of the surroundings taken with the aid of the front camera is augmented with helpful navigation information, for example, arrows or house numbers are automatically superimposed directly onto the touchscreen of the media display.
New and improved Mercedes me connect services are being launched with the new infotainment generation MBUX. The Mercedes me App collection can be placed as an icon on the screen in a user-friendly way, and can be freely sorted on the homepage like all other main applications.
The individual Mercedes me Connect services are grouped into equipment packages. Those available for the new A-Class are the Connectivity package for Navigation (119 euros[3]), which includes Live Traffic incl. Car-to-X communication, map updates in the dealership or over-the-air and the extended navigation services such as carpark information, filling station prices) and the Connectivity package for Navigation and Comfort (261.80 euros with additional in-car office function and pre-installation for the Concierge service).
Mercedes me is now extending its services to include private car sharing: the Mercedes me Car Sharing App allows A‑Class drivers to share their vehicle with a specified group of users. Friends, family members or colleagues can then easily book the A-Class for a fixed period of time.
The authorised user opens the vehicle using the App and by means of the Mercedes me communication module installed in the vehicle. The A-Class is started with a key which is left in the vehicle, temporary use of which is likewise enabled over the air by Mercedes me. When returning the vehicle, the driver leaves the key in the vehicle and locks it using the App, thereby bringing the sharing period to an end. The key in the vehicle can be used only during the sharing period.
Comfort: ambience lighting, seat climate control, multicontour seat
64 colours are possible with the ambience lighting (315.35 euros, in combination with the Style, Progressive or AMG line). The different colours are composed into ten colour worlds to allow an avant-garde lighting display with spectacular colour changes. If required, the colour worlds adapt to suit the different styles of the Widescreen display.
At the same time, comfort features from higher vehicle segments make an appearance: For the first time in this model series, and apart from seat heating for the driver and front passenger (345.10 euros), seat climate control (1059.10 euros) and the Multicontour Seat package (702.10 euros, expected from second quarter of 2018) with a massage function are available for the front seats.
Services: Attractive offers by Mercedes-Benz Bank AG
Mercedes-Benz Bank offers attractive leasing and financing packages for private customers. For the A 200, for example (price: 34,289.25 euros) the leasing instalment is a monthly 299 euros[4].
With the market launch of the new A-Class, customers taking out the telematics-based car insurance “InScore” will receive a discount of up to 30 percent on their insurance premium. They can directly influence the amount of their insurance premium with a “driver score” that is made up of the driving style, driving time and route. Drivers can view their “driver score” at any time in the “Mercedes me” customer portal, and if necessary adapt their driving behaviour. The new, fully integrated telematics car insurance is available for all telematics-capable Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
All Mercedes-Benz vehicles feature extensive security and anti-theft systems. Secure access to systems, data security, data privacy and anti-theft protection are important elements of our research and development activities. These and other measures serve to protect personal data against unauthorised access or illegal processing and disclosure. The measures are part of our information security management system, and are continually adapted to technical and organisational developments.
The data relevant for calculation of the telematic premium are sent to the scorer service provider of Daimler Financial Services in pseudonymised form. An average score for driving behaviour is then calculated. As the next step, the insurer determines the amount of the premium on the basis of this average score. The individual data covering driving style, driving time and route are not passed on to the insurer.
The new A-Class also assists networking within fleets, and with “connect business”, which is provided by Mercedes-Benz Connectivity Services GmbH, it helps to save costs. The digital services include an automated vehicle log, vehicle status monitoring and intelligent lease monitoring features.
The service protects the personal privacy of users, as they can switch to private-use mode at any time. Whereas no positional data are transferred in private mode, the fleet manager has a high level of transparency with business journeys.

The new A-Class is already set up for private car sharing: Mercedes me allows the new compact car to be shared with friends and family members. Operation is simple and secure using the Mercedes me app Car Sharing.
Sharing a car instead of owning one: car sharing is in. According to the German Car Sharing Association, over 1.7 million people in Germany are registered with providers such as market leader car2go. Mercedes me is now extending its services to include private car sharing: the Mercedes me app Car Sharing allows A‑Class drivers to share their vehicle with a specified group of users. Friends, family members or colleagues can then easily book the A‑Class for a fixed period of time.
The authorised user opens the vehicle using the app and by means of the Mercedes me communication module installed in the vehicle. The A‑Class is started with the vehicle key, which is left in the car and temporary use of which is likewise enabled over the air by Mercedes me. When returning the vehicle, the driver puts the key back in the car and closes the car with the app, thereby bringing the sharing period to an end. The vehicle key in the car can be used only during the sharing period.
Digital Vehicle Key as sticker
The car can also be contactlessly opened, closed and started by means of Near Field Communication (NFC). This technology is used by the Digital Vehicle Key. The new A‑Class is now also available in Germany with a Digital Vehicle Key Sticker with a built-in NFC controller. This means that the use of the Digital Vehicle Key no longer requires an NFC-capable smartphone.
First launched in the E‑Class, the Digital Vehicle Key is now available as an optional extra ex-works for a number of model series. However, not every smartphone has an NFC interface that complies with Mercedes-Benz's security standards. For the new A‑C lass, therefore, there is now a Digital Vehicle Key Sticker with a built-in microcontroller. Customers can order this sticker from the Mercedes me portal. Delivery is through a Mercedes-Benz sales partner.
Once stuck on the smartphone, the Digital Vehicle Key Sticker allows contactless opening, closing and starting of the vehicle. To start the engine, the driver simply needs to place their smartphone with the NFC sticker in the centre console stowage tray. Qi-compatible smartphones, i.e. those with a corresponding receiver coil for wireless charging, are also inductively charged while in the tray.
NFC is an international communications standard for short-range wireless data exchange. Data transfer begins automatically when an NFC-capable device is held close to another device. The Digital Vehicle Key from Mercedes-Benz transfers the authorisation to drive the vehicle to a secured and encrypted chip in the phone or sticker. This can then be used as a car key. The Digital Vehicle Key Sticker is also available for a number of car lines in conjunction with digital vehicle key for smartphone.

Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz is showcasing its new brand presence in the first showrooms. As the first international showroom, Hong Kong gives a thorough insight into the future world of experience. In Germany, customers can experience the new concept in Flensburg, where the brand with the star is showcasing how it will be experienceable virtually and in reality in future when the showroom becomes a stage. Within the context of the “Best Customer Experience” marketing and sales strategy, the premium brand is modernising its appearance in the exterior and interior area of its retail operations. In so doing, Mercedes-Benz is more strongly focusing on customers' needs: the aim is to create a fascinating brand experience at the point of sale through a combination of spatial design, innovative advisory processes and the introduction of digitalisation in advice, sales and service.
With its “Best Customer Experience” marketing and sales strategy, Mercedes‑Benz is further aligning its global sales and service for the future. With the new brand presence, the premium brand is redefining the role between the real and digital world in sales and service and is bringing together the benefits of both worlds. In so doing, the focus is on optimal customer care and a holistic brand experience of modern luxury from Mercedes-Benz.
“With the new brand presence, we are creating an innovative world of experience for our customers. Through the combination of personal contact and digital elements in advice, sales and service, our point of sale becomes a point of experience,” says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales. This will greatly enhance the quality of personal advice: the discussion atmosphere between advisor and customer benefits from media that supports their dialogue as well as the new world of experience in the car dealership. All information relating to the vehicle becomes more tangible for the customer thanks to the new presentation forms.
It's not only customers who benefit from the new brand presence – it is also a clear sign for the approximately 6,500 Mercedes-Benz locations around the world. Bricks-and-mortar retail will serve as a personal point of contact for all customers and interested parties in the digital age, too, and will be a mainstay of Mercedes-Benz sales. In addition to virtual contact, there will always be a personal customer contact in future. In line with the philosophy of customer centricity, Mercedes-Benz focusses on customers and interested parties, offering them a premium brand experience across all points of contact.
Point of sale becomes a point of experience
All retail elements were considered and modernised with the new appearance at the point of sale, from the reception, sales and service to delivery. In future, the showrooms will become a stage for products and services. Supported by media, a brand space will be created where customers and interested parties experience the brand virtually and in reality. The point of sale becomes a point of experience, a place to encounter the Mercedes-Benz Cars brand family. Designed in cooperation with the Mercedes-Benz Design Team, the new brand presence reflects the design idiom of modern luxury and also makes this more intensely experienceable in retail.
The Hung Hom location in Hong Kong shows what the new brand presence looks like in an international context. Hung Hom is a typical example of an urban showroom in an optimal inner-city location with restaurants and places to shop. Customers here are experiencing the new level of quality in advice, sales and service after a short renovation period of just seven months. All the core elements of the new brand presence including mobile advice and new processes in sales and after sales have been consistently implemented in Hong Kong in the context of the realignment of the sales network.
New job profiles for sales personnel are an essential part of the new brand presence. They ensure that the increasing product complexity and digitisation are taken into account, as well as the individual needs of customers. For example, the product experts explain the special features of the models and their technologies directly on the vehicle or on digital devices and screens to interested parties. The Star Assistant helps shape the entry into the Mercedes‑Benz brand world for the customer. The new job description also plays a key role: The Star Assistant is the first contact for the customer at the reception in the showroom. The customer's concerns are clarified in a personal conversation. As part of the new reception situation, the customer is then immediately forwarded to the appropriate contact person for advice or a service or sales conversation. Setting up a drive-in service reception also illustrates the consistent alignment towards customer requirements and enables optimal customer care in combination with the integrated customer contact surfaces for sales and after sales. This has been demonstrated after just a short period of time in a clear increase in customer frequency.
Hung Hom also serves as an example of the modularity of the new brand presence, which allows for classic locations in suburban areas as well as other format types, for example in the inner city. The basis for this are standardised global basic principles, which allow numerous applications when implementing the brand presence. This means that in the near future, new formats will be possible in Mercedes-Benz brick-and-mortar retail. Customers in Germany can experience the new brand presence in Flensburg.
Elements of the new brand presence
New processes and level of quality in terms of advice
Advice in sales and service has been re-conceptualised and can be individually tailored to the customer to an even greater extent. Processes become detached from previous information and advisory situations: customers are advised situatively and on the move. Stiff furnishing with desks is passé. Showroom employees use media surfaces or mobile end devices flexibly and as required, and advise the customer in various spatial situations, depending on the type and requirements of the personal conversation. In the specially designed lounge areas, advice, sales and service conversations can thus take place in a relaxed atmosphere. The integration of the new job profiles also contributes to this. Thus, for example, product experts advise the customer on the vehicle and its functions and support test drives.
Integration of digital media
One focal point of the new brand presence is the amalgamation of the analogue and digital world. Digital media and the possibilities it presents are used creatively to support conversations in person. Above all in advisory and sales situations they allow for a previously unknown brand and product experience for the customers. Alternating use of medial surfaces with brand, technology and lifestyle topics not only support the presentation and explanation of the products and services of an ever increasing portfolio, but also ensure highly emotive and individual advice and sales.
New reception situation
The new brand architecture is experienceable even when entering the showroom. In future, the entrance will be designed as a personal welcome gesture. The welcome and initial informal customer meeting take place at high tables grouped together in a relaxed manner. The customer experiences comprehensive care regardless of internal units. The new role of the Star Assistant as a host and the “first face” of the brand ensures a very welcoming atmosphere at reception.
New showroom architecture
The architectural concept of the showrooms contrasts with a silver-white roof or celling design thanks to a black interior landscape. Spatial boundaries within the building are kept to a minimum to deliberately create an open-space feeling. A largely transparent building façade creates a flowing transition between the interior and exterior areas.
The concept is modular in design and is oriented to the needs of customers and interested parties. Thanks to their flexibility and variability, the brand presence's individual elements allow a high degree of spatial applications and formats, and thus a consistently applicable CI/CD. This enables individual consultation and sales processes with a standardised global brand presence.
