Fresh out of the box as the newest additions to lineup of BMW M models, the X3 M and X4 M have already joined the list of cars being manufactured at the carmaker’s facility in the U.S. With their addition, the location in Spartanburg, South Carolina, increases the number of X models it assembles to nine.
2 photosAnd it’s no surprise that is so, considering the fact that the Xs in the lineup, meaning BMW’s SUVs, accounted for more than half of the company's sales in the country last year. At the same time, with a production capacity of 450,000 vehicles per year, the Spartanburg facility is BMW’s largest in the world and the perfect point of origin for the two cars.
“The addition of these two all-new models plus the first-ever BMW X7, which began production last December, is a testament to the performance, passion and pride of the more than 11,000 people working at Plant Spartanburg and serves to further underscore BMW’s commitment in the U.S.,” said in a statement Knudt Flor, MW Manufacturing CEO.
“Since the BMW X5 was first introduced, creating the premium SAV segment in 1999, Plant Spartanburg has been BMW’s global center of competence for X models and continues to be so today.”
Both the models to be put together in Spartanburg use the same engine, a 3.0-liter that develops 480 horsepower and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque. Those figures make it the most powerful six-cylinder inline engine ever used in a car by M.
There will be two variants for each of the two Ms, the regular one, if it can be called that, and the Competition. The main difference between them is the fact that the engine on the Competition variants will develop 510 hp and will have a slightly quicker acceleration time. Both cars will enter production this April.

Love them or hate them, SUVs and car-based crossovers are all the rage these days. From the likes of the Dacia Duster and Suzuki Jimny to leviathans like the BMW X7 and Lincoln Navigator, people all across the world can’t get enough of the utility vehicle craze.
29 photosEven Ferrari announced the Purosangue, its first-ever entry in the segment, featuring all-wheel drive and a hybridized V8 from the Italian automaker’s upcoming supercar. But Rolls-Royce has a different idea in regard to what a high-end SUV should be, and this is where the Cullinan steps in.
Revealed in May 2018 and retailing at $325,000 before opening the options and personalization brochures, the Phantom-based utility vehicle isn’t named after the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered just because Rolls-Royce wants to impress. It is even more luxurious than the Bentley Bentayga, and that’s saying something.
Produced at the Goodwood plant alongside the Phantom, the Double R can’t keep up with demand for the thing even though the first examples of the breed arrived in showrooms in November 2018. Automotive News understands from Martin Fritsches, chief executive of the British automaker in the Americas, that “many customers who already drive the Dawn or Phantom buy a second Rolls-Royce.”
“Self-indulgence” is what motivates these people to add the Cullinan to their car collection, and according to Rolls-Royce, the order books are full through July 2019. In the ballpark of half of Cullinan customers are new to the brand, and the luxo-SUV is incredibly successful with women.
Stefano Domenicali of Lamborghini said the same thing about the Urus before the production model went official, and now look at the Raging Bull of Sant’Agata Bolognese. Sales are better than ever before, and even though Bentley came up with the Bentayga Speed (306 km/h), the Urus (305 km/h) accelerates quicker and handles better.
Because of the high-riding Roller, the Goodwood-based automaker had to increase its staff by 200 jobs, now totaling 2,000 employees. For the sake of comparison, Rolls-Royce had 1,300 employees five years ago.

Designed at the Kia Design Center in Irvine California, named after a town in San Miguel County, Colorado, and now rolling off production lines at the carmaker’s facility in Georgia, the Telluride is getting ready to make itself known to its American customers.
12 photosOn Friday, a little over a month after the car’s presentation at the Detroit Auto Show, the Telluride began rolling off production lines in West Point, in the presence of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and several other high ranking officials.
“This vehicle was imagined and designed specifically for the United States in our Kia Design Center in Irvine, California and is now being assembled here in West Point,” said in a statement the CEO of Kia’s Georgia facility, Jason Shin.
“There is no doubt that the world-class quality and attention to detail of the Telluride will be second to none.”
The Telluride is a big gamble for the South Korean manufacturer. Aside from being an SUV created specifically for the American market, is it also the company’s largest to date, and at the same time the most expensive.
The Telluride is powered by single engine, a 3.8-liter GDI V6 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and capable of generating 291 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque.
The model comes equipped with a large 10.25-inch color touchscreen located in the center of the dashboard and providing access to controls and information, including rear view monitoring and parking guidance.
Pricing for the new Telluride starts at $31,690 for the LX trim but can go as high as $43,490 for the SX. Several packages will be available for the model, the most expensive of which is the Prestige: $2,000 for things like Nappa leather interior, a head-up display or Michelin tires.
Kia did not say when it will start receiving orders for the SUV. At the time of this writing, the company’s U.S. configurator does not include the Telluride.

Mercedes-Benz EQC Is Three Months Behind Schedule

Developed to take on the Audi e-tron quattro, the EQC from Mercedes-Benz is more than meets the eye. It’s also more than the GLC-Class, which will receive a mid-cycle refresh this March at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
45 photosOn the downside, the three-pointed start postponed the launch of the EQC in Europe by three months. Handelsblatt suggests “the manufacturer doesn’t have enough batteries” to support mass production from the get-go. The publication also understands that Mercedes-Benz will start VIP deliveries in June 2019.
Output will be extremely limited through November 2019 at the earliest, three months behind the original schedule. If we were to make a parallel to Mercedes-Benz’s trouble, don’t forget that Tesla also had problems with sourcing enough batteries for the Model 3 electric sedan.
Another magazine from Germany suggests that Audi has trouble getting the e-tron quattro into dealer showrooms. Development costs are said to have surpassed the two-billion-euro threshold. If the report turns out to be true, this nameplate will never reach the break-even point.
Looking at the bigger picture, no automaker has the resources to develop and manufacture electric vehicles on the same level as Tesla. The Volkswagen Group is edging closer to Palo Alto with the help of the Modular Electric Toolkit that underpins the ID. Neo, but we’re not keeping our hopes up for mass production in the hatchback’s first year of availability.
Coming as standard with two motors and an 80-kWh battery, the EQC 400 4Matic promises more than 450 kilometers (280 miles) on a full charge. Converting from the New European Driving Cycle to WLTP would bring the electric crossover closer to 320, maybe 350 kilometers.
Production of the EQC will be handled at two locations. In addition to Bremen in Germany, there’s also the automaker’s Beijing Benz Automotive plant in China. As far as pricing is concerned, Mercedes-Benz is expected to charge more than 70,000 euros for the entry-level trim.
For the sake of reference, the e-tron quattro is 79,900 euros in Germany. Mercedes-Benz has a habit of pricing its models higher than Audi, leading us to believe the starting price of the EQC is closer to €80,000 before the plug-in grant.
