Tesla CTO and battery mastermind JB Straubel exits

At the start of a call Wednesday to provide guidance on Tesla’s record sales but $408 million loss in the second quarter, Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped a bombshell: that its chief technical officer, JB Straubel, will be stepping down from his executive post.

Drew Baglino will take over most of the responsibilities held by Straubel, who will be transitioning to the role of senior advisor.

The departure of Straubel is a huge loss for the company. He’s considered a co-founder of Tesla, as well as an expert on energy storage and propulsion—and in many intents and purposes has been Musk’s partner in Tesla’s rise. The Stanford grad has been the mastermind behind key decisions made on Tesla’s power systems and battery technology—decisions that have given the company a continued advantage in efficiency and driving range after other companies have created rival electric models. To this day he's considered one of the world's top experts in vehicle battery tech.

Straubel's public role for the company that often played well with Musk’s zeal. He was composed and engaging, often chiming in on company calls or presentations with smart answers to technical points, provided some deep-dive insight on the company’s tech in blog posts, and was approachable, helping provide rides and demos at product events. In a 2016 speech, prior to the launch event for the Model 3 and the hundreds of thousands of advance orders to follow, Straubel said, “I never imagined that things would scale or grow as quickly as they have.”

But Tesla and its share price did grow quickly, and it earned him tremendous wealth. According to Bloomberg, Straubel has offloaded Tesla shares eight times in the past nine months, in transactions netting him about $30.1 million.

After Musk announced the change Wednesday, Straubel chimed in and said, “Yeah, it’s been a great adventure, 16 years.”

“And maybe just to add a bit more to that, I'm not disappearing,” said Straubel, who was in his 20s when the company started work on its Lotus-based Tesla Roadster. “I’m not disappearing, and I just wanted to make sure that people understand that this was not some, you know, lack of confidence in the company or the team or anything like that.”

Musk reminisced briefly about the first meeting he had with Straubel, at McCormick & Schmick's in El Segundo. “If we hadn't had lunch in 2003, Tesla wouldn't exist, basically.”

The initial premise of that meeting, Straubel has previously said, was to get Musk to financially support Straubel’s electric airplane project. Electric cars were looking like a long shot for a startup in 2003; perhaps electric airplanes may take off in the next decade, with Straubel the pilot.

Car and van manufacturers meet CO2 emissions targets for 2016

18/01/2018All large car and van manufacturers in the EU met their CO2 emissions target in 2016, according to data published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) today. The EEA report confirms preliminary findings that the EU fleet average of new vehicles is well below its 2016 emissions target.
The new EEA report shows that, based on laboratory tests, the average emissions level of a new car sold in the EU in 2016 was 118.1 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per kilometre, well below the 2015 target of 130 g. A new van sold in the EU in 2016 emitted on average 163.7 grams of CO2 per kilometre, which is already below the 2017 target of 175 g.
Manufacturers will have to reduce emissions further to meet the targets of 95 g CO2/km by 2021 for cars and 147 g CO2/km by 2020 for vans.

März 2018 hat sich am künftigen Grammer Unternehmenssitz in Ursensollen viel getan: Heute wurde das Richtfest für den fertiggestellten Rohbau des ersten Bauabschnitts im Rahmen einer feierlichen Zeremonie gefeiert. Grammer Vorstandsvorsitzender Manfred Pretscher sprach den Bauleuten und Handwerkern, Architekten und der Baufirma Max Bögl, die das Projekt umsetzt, seinen Dank und großes Lob für ihre gute Arbeit aus. An der Feier nahmen auch Mitglieder des Aufsichtsrats und des Betriebsrats des Unternehmens teil.
„Im Namen des gesamten Grammer Teams möchte ich mich bei allen für diesen Bau Verantwortlichen für ihr Engagement und ihre hervorragende Arbeit herzlich bedanken. Das Ergebnis ist großartig geworden. Sowohl die Bürogebäude als auch unser neues und hochmodernes Technologiezentrum sind Ausdruck der Innovationskraft unseres Unternehmens. Vorstand und Belegschaft von Grammer freuen sich schon jetzt darauf, die Gebäude beziehen zu können“, so Manfred Pretscher, Vorstandsvorsitzender von Grammer.
Für Grammer ist der Neubau, der auf einem rund 47.000 Quadratmeter großen Grundstück entsteht, das größte Bauprojekt in der Unternehmensgeschichte. Ingesamt investiert das Unternehmen für das Projekt in zwei Bauabschnitten über 40 Millionen Euro. Die Fertigstellung der Gebäude des ersten Bauabschnitts sowie der Umzug des Vorstands und eines Teils der Belegschaft aus der Verwaltung sind für Ende des Jahres geplant. Insgesamt werden künftig mehr als 700 Grammer Mitarbeiter am neuen Standort in Ursensollen arbeiten.
Moderne und attraktive Arbeitsumgebung
Auf dem Grammer Campus in Ursensollen entstehen neben der Grammer Konzernzentrale mit einer Bürofläche von 22.000 Quadratmetern und dem Technologiezentrum auch ein Design- und Ergonomie-Labor sowie ein Mitarbeiterrestaurant. In dem neuen Technologiezentrum werden zudem erstmals die Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten an einem Ort gebündelt und so die räumliche Voraussetzung für eine optimale Zusammenarbeit der verschiedenen Abteilungen geschaffen.
Oberstes Ziel für Grammer ist es, am neuen Standort eine attraktive, gesunde, nachhaltige und moderne Arbeitsumgebung zu schaffen, in der die Mitarbeiter kreativ und effizient arbeiten und kommunizieren können. Dafür sorgen hohe und helle Büroräume, verschiedene Räumlichkeiten für Besprechungen und mehrere Kommunikations-Hubs. Das Thema Nachhaltigkeit ist für Grammer ebenfalls sehr wichtig: So wurden größtenteils regionale Werkstoffe für den Bau verwendet. Begrünte Dächer reduzieren im Sommer die Wärmerückstrahlung und binden gleichzeitig Feinstaub. Und bei der Heizung und Beleuchtung der Gebäude wird auf Energieeffizienz geachtet.
