Der Reisemobil-Boom der vergangenen Jahre wurde in erster Linie getragen von dem Run auf immer kompaktere Fahrzeuge. Eine Entwicklung, die sich auf dem Düsseldorfer Caravan-Salon am Mercedes-Stand gut nachvollziehen lässt. Vor allem, weil die Nobelmarke mit dem Stern frühzeitig das Potenzial erkannt hat, das im Caravaning-Markt steckt, und deshalb Hymer als einen der ganz Großen der Branche schon früh in die Entwicklungsphase des Sprinters eingebunden hat.Neben dem Siegeszug des Sprinters, in Düsseldorf dokumentiert durch einen Yukon-Kastenwagen von Frankia, einem im Innenraum mit blauem Interieur bunter gewordenen Marco Polo und dem ersten vollelektrischen EQV-Camper des Schweizer Partners Sortimo zeigt sich das in der Premiere der neuen T-Klasse mit Marco-Polo-Modulen. Die Marco-Polo-Familie wächst damit um ein neues Einstiegsmodell im kleinsten Van-Format.
„Wir reagieren damit auf die steigende Nachfrage nach Micro-Campern, die vor allem in der jungen, stark wachsenden Vanlife-Fangemeinde immer beliebter werden“, erläutert Klaus Rehkugler, der Leiter Vertrieb und Marketing bei den Mercedes Benz Vans, das Engagement der Stuttgarter auch in diesem Segment. Dass die Camping-Version des Hochdachkombis direkt über die Mercedes-Händler vertrieben wird, unterstreicht die Ernsthaftigkeit der Mission.
Die Mercedes T-Klasse ist die Pkw-Variante des Nutzfahrzeugs Citan, stammt aus der Kooperation mit Renault und ist im Prinzip das Schwestermodell des Kangoo oder des Nissan Townstar.

Ähnlich wie der im Vorjahr eingeführte VW Caddy California, der als schärfster Rivale des Sternen-Vans gelten dürfte, lässt sich die T-Klasse mit zwei Modulen zum Micro-Camper umwandeln: eine serienmäßige Betteinheit und ein optionaler Küchenblock fürs Heck. Eine ähnliche Ausführung war bereits im vergangenen Jahr in Düsseldorf auf Basis eines Citan mit Modulen der Marke Vanessa zu sehen.

Mit Küche und Waschbecken
Die T-Klasse lässt sich mit zwei Modulen zum Micro-Camper umwandeln.
Die neuen Module für die in Eigenregie vertriebene T-Klasse sind allerdings eine Maßanfertigung von – man höre und staune – Brabus! Der Fahrzeughersteller aus Bottrop, bekannt dafür, aus teuren Mercedes-Produkten noch teurere, getunte Mercedes-Boliden zu machen, betätigt sich für den Hochdach-Van als Betten- und Küchenbauer.

Undoubtedly well thought out and in a classy form, the surcharges to be expected will only be revealed later, when the small 4.50 meter camper will be available in branches and dealerships from the end of the year. For your orientation: The basic T160 version with a 75 kW/102 hp petrol engine and a manual gearbox is available from around 30,000 euros.
When driving, the standard bed unit is located in the trunk with a folded, three-part mattress and is above the kitchen block if this option is installed. The rear seats can be used without restriction. To build the bed, the bed frame together with the disc spring system is pulled out to the front and the three-part mattress, which unfortunately consists of separate individual parts, is spread out over it. This results in a lying area of 2.00 x 1.15 meters, which must be enough for two people.
The standard scope also includes darkening elements for all window panes and a ventilation grille with insect protection, which is clamped between the panes and the frame. Also standard on board are two window pockets on both sides between the C and D pillars for smaller items.

Modular conversion concepts that enable flexible use as an everyday vehicle or camper are also among the plus points of a micro camper, as are small external dimensions, easy handling, a weight of less than three tons and driving with a category B driving license.
Mercedes therefore wants to expand its presence in small vans in the second half of 2023 with a “fully integrated micro camper”, which will then probably also be equipped with a pop-up roof. And the fact that an electric version based on an already announced EQT can soon be expected should be a logical consequence.
