Volkswagen’s operating system
The car manufacturer is getting more support from suppliers than originally planned when developing its own car operating system.

The new Volkswagen boss Oliver Blume has to adapt the software strategy of Europe’s largest car manufacturer. The Wolfsburg-based company will miss the goal set by Blume’s predecessor Herbert Diess of developing at least 60 percent of the software for their own car operating system on their own. The Handelsblatt learned this from industry circles.
The car manufacturer is therefore more dependent on external help than planned for one of its most central projects. In addition to the Bosch Group, which is developing algorithms for automated driving with VW’s software unit Cariad, Continental is now apparently also playing a crucial role.
The Dax group from Hanover will develop the so-called middleware for the VW operating system, according to industry circles. The middleware enables data to be exchanged between the software and hardware in a car. Neither Continental nor Cariad wanted to comment on this.
