The Chinese government is drafting rules for the use of autonomous vehicles in public transport.

China wants to make progress in the field of autonomous driving. Nice 2016 there was a roadmap for dealing with it and over the last few years it has been growing test areas in the country. Now they want to install the legal framework for vehicles in public transport.

China should adopt autonomous vehicles in passenger transport with caution, the country’s transportation ministry said in a draft rule regulating the autonomous vehicle industry. The ministry will encourage the use of autonomous vehicles in the form of robotic taxis in easily controllable scenarios in low-traffic situations, according to a public consultation draft released on Monday. Safety should be the top priority.

China is measuring itself against the US in the commercialization of autonomous driving. It is about the sensors, the mapping and the rules for development and safe operation. However, they come United States on regulation not going so well. Meanwhile, the individual US states have already passed corresponding laws. In China, Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen have also issued more extensive permits, allowing companies such as Baidu and Pony.ai to operate robotaxi in restricted areas.

baidu previously confirmed it had received approval to operate the first fully driverless robotaxi services on open roads in two Chinese cities. It means the southwestern area of Chongqing Municipality and downtown Wuhan.
