Mercedes-Benz can reduce gas consumption by up to half in the face of stagnant deliveries from Russia. “We are ready for this at any time,” said production manager Jörg Burzer to journalists on Friday at an event in Berlin. Mercedes has already saved ten percent of its gas requirements and can scale this up. It must be taken into account which parts are required for ongoing production.
Should there be a gas shortage, the situation would be more complicated. Contingency plans to avoid production shutdowns depended on suppliers being able to continue operations.
Volkswagen assumes that a gas shortage could occur from June and has prepared for various scenarios, such as disruptions in the supply chain. Nevertheless, the Wolfsburg do not rule out the effects on their own business.
In the event of a gas shortage, Volkswagen is asking the Federal Network Agency to allocate the energy volumes to the group and not to individual locations in order to be able to better distribute the energy resource. The Wolfsburg aim to reduce gas consumption by a mid double-digit percentage.
