Autonomous snow clearing vehicles are used at Stuttgart Airport.
The idea is not new, because Mercedes-Benz already had the idea of using converted Actros vehicles to clear the snow from the airfield in Stuttgart. The company Aebi Schmidt Group is now taking on this task, as the airport announced last week.
The system was checked last week. It is now also fully integrated. The runways, taxiways and apron are cleared. The routes to be traveled are predefined and are managed autonomously. In addition, the fleet is orchestrated so that all vehicles can act together. In addition to the snow plough, the roller brush and the blower are in action.
Equipped with this, the airport can be cleared of snow even in bad weather conditions. The automated vehicles are supported by satellites and record their work. Personnel are still on board during the test deployments. However, the legal framework does not yet allow regular use.
