Although Mercedes, like most manufacturers, is preparing for an electric future, those responsible in Stuttgart know that the combustion engine will be needed for a few more years. That’s why they once again put a conventional successor on the wheels. It goes on sale in the fall and will cost at least 57,632 euros – a good ten percent more expensive than before.
However, there is at least a little more car for the money. Because the GLC, with its body that has been smoothed out in the wind tunnel but is a bit beefier again, not only looks better. With almost two centimeters more wheelbase and six centimeters more length, it also offers more space: the backbenchers are happy about a small increase in legroom, and the trunk has grown by ten percent to 600 liters, which finally offer storage space befitting its status behind an electric flap that is now standard .
There is also more finesse in the choice of materials, smarter assistants and, above all, a new operating concept as we know it from the younger Mercedes models. Like the technically closely related C-Class, the GLC now also drives with the MBUx multimedia system and one of the most intelligent language assistants on the market. Customers only have to do without the large hyperscreen as in the electric flagship EQS.
Mercedes has also made significant improvements in terms of handling. Like every SUV, it is already more confident than a sedan, and the GLC, which can be optionally fitted with air suspension all round, now ensures even more relaxation. The necessary quiet brings improved sound insulation. With the new rear-axle steering, the car appears noticeably more manageable and is easier to maneuver around corners.

And because they are serious about the “G” in the type designation, they have also programmed a new trailer assistant and optimized route guidance for trailers. In addition, a camera makes the even more powerful bonnet almost transparent, so that you can maneuver through tight spots in the terrain without incurring any damage.
Cockpit of the GLC
The new generation should be more digital.
And there is now a special position for the air suspension, which raises the ground by an additional two centimetres.
Old school at propulsion
Until then, the GLC looks like a contemporary SUV that could take a leading position in its segment – if the choice of engines weren’t a bit backwards. Only an integrated starter generator with 48-volt technology helps the combustion engines to be a little more economical. You can choose between a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 150 kW/204 hp or 190 kW/258 hp and a 2.0-liter diesel with 143 KW/197 hp or 195 kW/265 hp.
And unlike the C-Class, the GLC gets a V6 engine with more than 221 kW/300 hp, which makes the SUV appear convincing, but also drives consumption up.
But Mercedes has not completely ignored the signs of the times. There are three plug-in hybrids on offer, all of which have also been significantly improved. The electric motor has significantly more power at 100 kW, the batteries have more capacity at 32 kWh, and the car can also be charged faster if desired.
Also available semi-electric
In addition to the classic combustion engines, the GLC should also be available as a plug-in hybrid.
The system outputs are between 230 kW/313 hp and 280 kW/381 hp. If you drive in E mode, you can travel up to 100 kilometers at a maximum of 140 km/h – a distance that should usually be enough in everyday life. If both engines are used, the GLC 300 de manages over 1000 kilometers in one go. At least in terms of the theoretical consumption, which is given as 0.4 liters, there is little to complain about. On paper, CO2 emissions are 10 g/km.
Conclusion: Attractive interim solution for Flexi drivers
More efficient, smarter and more comfortable and with the plug-in hybrids a big step further on the way to electrification: The GLC may not be a pioneer, but it is an attractive transitional solution. Because even if you want to remain flexible when refueling, you don’t have to do without the advantages of a Mercedes for the time being.
